Lauren and Anne Q&A: Part 1.
Me: I asked you about this in the meet and greet but I’ve completely forgotten and my friends will kill me, umm, the tattoo on your back. What exactly did it say again?
Lauren: Well…It’s a Latin word. Nil Desperandum, and it means never despair. Not to be confused with don’t be desperate, which a lot of people think and it's, yeah no.
Anne: That’s cool
Lauren: Thank you
Anne: How long have you had that?
Lauren: Ummm, 3 years now
Anne: Cool, that’s nice. I like that sentiment. It’s cool
Me: Lie with me, very brave role, excellent film. Did you have any reservations about taking the role?
Lauren: Absolutely. Umm, definitely it’s not like I um jump at the chance of getting naked and having crazy ass sex scenes. Umm…*Laughs* Uh, but when I first read the script I I hadn’t really been given the opportunity first of all. It was my first film I did. Uh, um, it was an opportunity to break out of everything up until that point, and um, I don’t know I just, I thought it was a really beautiful love story, in a way. Umm, and in my opinion that’s what it is, a modern day love story, and you know um, modern day we have sex. So…that was just part of it. *Laughs*
Me: It’s a fantastic film I’ve tried to get people to watch it
Oh that’s wonderful…I’m trying to get people to watch it as well unfortunately
Anne: *Laughs*
Lauren: *Laughs*
Unfortunately it was just a very small Canadian independent film
Me: It’s kinda hard to explain without making sound like something it’s not
Lauren: Exactly, I’ve found the same problem actually, but yeah, I…I, thank you
Anne: Can you rent it?
Lauren: Uhh, you know I don’t think so. I know in Canada you can. In the states I think you have to order it, and it’s a big ordeal.
Anne: Oh, I see.
Me: Yeah it’s out on DVD I know that.
Lauren: Yeah. *Nods*
Me: I think it’s out here (England) now.
Lauren: Oh is it?
Me: I got mine from America. But I believe it’s out here now.
Anne: Oh
Me: I think it got to the cinema over here. Umm…
Lauren: I, I think it did for a very short period of time. *Laughs*
Me: It’s fantastic film.
Lauren: Well thank you very much. I’m very proud of it.
Attendee: I’m curious to know about what movies you have coming out?
Lauren: Ummm, I hopefully have a few things coming out. I hope they’ll see the light of day. Umm, you never know. *Laughs* Ummm, there’s a film called Trick R’ Treat, that I think uh is coming out sometime in the summer. Which is a little bit weird as it’s a Halloween movie. *laughs* Sooo, that should be interesting.
Umm, then I did a film called Pathology. Uh, this sort of psychological thriller. And that’s coming out April 18th in the states, and hopefully it’ll be over here fairly soon. Um, and I just finished a film called Helen that I shot. Finished last week actually, uh, um, with Ashley Judd and a it’s a film that ah…is about depression. So it’s very uplifting, happy film, feel good movie. Umm, and then I shot a pilot for HBO called Anatomy of Hope, and we’re still waiting to hear about what’s going to happen with that. So, ya, hopefully, hopefully, some of them will make it on air at some point.
Anne: What was Anatomy of Hope about?
Lauren: Ummm, another uplifting story. Uh, about cancer. Cancer patients. People living with cancer. *Laughing* Yeah, yeah I know, I know *laughs* I thought the same thing when I read it.
Anne: Well I love HBO.
Lauren: Well who’s going to want to watch this! It’s so depressing. It’s it’s very uplifting and it tries to sort of …it puts a positive light, a positive spin, on on the way that you can can deal with it.
Anne: Where was that shot?
Lauren: Los Angeles
Anne: Oh great
Lauren: Yeah.
So we’ll see.
Attendee: I’m going to California soon, so what would be the best pick up line?
Lauren and Anne: *Laughs*
Anne: Wow! That’s a crazy question
Lauren: That is a crazy question!
Anne: *Looks at Lauren*You go.
Lauren: I…I got no game. I have no game what so ever!
Anne: Ooooh, I doubt that.
Lauren: Uhh…Can I buy you a drink? *Laughs* That’s always a good one.
Anne: I have a good one. Do you have a piece of gum?
It’s just opens up the…
Lauren: Yeah, yeah, I..that’s good. That’s good. Do you have a piece of gum…
Anne: I guess she doesn’t, no one likes it.
Attendee: What do you do in your free time?
Lauren: Uhh, I’m pretty boring . I… I… I… I read a lot. I like to paint. Umm, I like to travel whenever I can, as much as I can. Umm…I like to… have people cook for me and I like to eat.
Lauren and Anne: *laughs*
Lauren: Umm, yeah. I like to do yoga. Play with my dogs. Yep.
Attendee: Lauren, Lie with me, amazing movie like Claire said.
Lauren: Oh thank you.
Attendee: What was granma thinking about it?
Lauren: What was Granma thinking about it?
Attendee: You know, can she watch you?
Lauren: You know that’s so funny because ummm, a lot of people have asked me like, Oh my god would you let your parents see that?! Or your brothers? Or whatever. And the answer is always, of course. I would never do anything I would be ashamed for my family to see. Umm, however my brothers chose not to see it. Umm, *laughs*, but I was always very open with them. And told them exactly what they would be seeing if they did.
My grandma is kind of funny, because my mum came with me to the premiere in Toronto. And during filming I was telling… my grandma and I are very close,…and I was telling her all about it. And she’d heard bits and pieces, and sort of understands there’s a lot of nudity in the film, and uh, my mum wouldn’t let her watch it. *laughs* My mum was like, yeah, I don’t know…she’s you know… At the time she was like 94. She’s like, I don’t think so. So I actually snuck it to my Granma. Umm…
Anne: Awww, that’s cute.
Lauren: Yeah. Uh, my Granma and I have our own secret little relationship going on. So…And she, she loved the film. She was very proud of it as well.
Attendee: Cause I lend DVD’s to my Granma
Lauren: Yeah…
Attendee: And I gave her that movie.
Lauren: You did! *laughs*
Attendee: She turned it off after 5 minutes.
Lauren: I, I can understand that. I can understand that definitely. Yep.
Attendee: In season 5 of The L Word a fan got the opportunity to write the teaser for an episode. What do you feel about that? About fans getting directly involved in the show like that?
Anne: Um, I think that’s great. I didn’t know that happened. I think that’s kind of cool.
Lauren: Very cool. Very very cool. I didn’t know that either.
Anne: Yeah. That’s kind of great.
Lauren: It’s about time they started listening to the fans.
Lauren and Anne: *Laughs*
Anne: Oh look…
Me: Hello again
Lauren: Hello again *Laughs*
Me: For Lauren again unsurprisingly. Um, you used to model. Um, how did you transition from modelling into acting?
Lauren: Um *Laughs* I, I…
Anne: Somebody’s in love with you.
Lauren: *Laughs* Awww.
Anne: She’s wearing a pink shirt.
Lauren: *Laughs*
Me: I’ve been embarrassed all weekend like this by my friends. It’s fine…
Lauren: *Laughs some more*
Lauren: I never actually really…I mean if you call…Like when I was, from the time I was 13 I was the same height that I am now, and I was really, really, really, really skinny. And I, I just did a few little things. I wasn’t really, you know, a model. I, I don’t think anyway. Um, so there wasn’t really any, some sort of big transition for me umm…I’d been doing theatre form the time I can remember so it’s, this is always what I’ve wanted to do. My family, we travelled so much when I was growing up. We, we were every six months we were in a different country or a different city so it was always sort of hard to be stable and be able to actually pursue something, so, um, I had to wait until I was 18. We were living in the states actually. Illegally. *laughs*
Anne: It’s good that you announce that here.
Lauren: *Laughs* Well, I can do that now. I was like I can’t get a drivers licence. I can’t get a job. I’m going back to Canada. So, umm, I went back to Vancouver and um, yeah…that’s how I started.
Attendee: What was your favourite episode to film? And Why?
Lauren: I don’t know if I have…I really, um, I really liked in the first season. The scenes where I’ve cut my fingers and Lara was explaining *laughs* how she did that. It was the scene I had to audition with, with Erin. The very first time, so it was just really, I mean I had to audition I think like 5 times. So I had to do that scene over and over and over again. Different people at different points. So when it came time to finally do it with Erin and we were in the restaurant, it was just really fun.
I thought it was cute.
Attendee: Who was the better kisser, Leisha or Erin?
Lauren: That’s so not fair.
Anne: Wow…Harsh.
Lauren: That’s so not fair!
Anne: Totally harsh…ANSWER IT!
Lauren: *Laughs*
Anne: Come on. That’s a good question. Pleeease answer it.
Lauren: Well clearly I had to kiss Erin much more. Um, and she’s a fabulous kisser. Um *Laughs*
Uh, Leisha and I, it was always quite silly because uh the very first time we had to kiss each other, it was this scene where I come back to Dana’s appartment, and I uh just find out that she had passed away. So Leisha and I are just crying, and we have snot running down our faces. And literally…
Anne: Sexy
Lauren: It was, yeah! It was kind of disgusting and we just had to go for it, and we weren’t really, at this point we weren’t really sure what our characters were going through. We were botha little hesitant about the kiss. And I remember the director was like, no, no, go for it. Come on, just make it more passionate. And we’re like *indicates snot all down their faces* *Laughs*
Anne: That’s hot.
Lauren: Yeah, yeah. So we were both kinda like *Indicates what do we do?*
Anne: It is kind of hot
Lauren: O…k…
Anne: Yeah
Lauren: I mean, at the end of the day it was fun, we had a good laugh about it. So I would say it’s, I can’t choose. They were both really good.
Anne: Very good answer. Now you’re not going to get in trouble.
Lauren: Yeah, exactly.
Attendee: About Lara and Alice hooking up after Dana’s death. Do you think that’s a realistic thing them hooking up after the characters death?
Lauren: Yeah. Leisha and I both had trouble wrapping our heads around it at first. Um, but, it happens. You know, people come together through mourning. And you’re so lost and you don’t know where else to turn,a nd it just seems so clear and obvious in that moment. So, once we sort of wrapped our heads around the whole initial shock of, No, no, we can’t do this. We can’t do this to Dana. Um, I think it really did make sense. Um, and I was really, um I think we were both sort of very interested where it would go. Unfortunately it didn’t go anywhere.
*Laughs* I went to San Francisco…*Confused look*
