If you started a baseball team, which active pitcher in their prime would you pick as the best pitcher to build a pitching staff around ?

(minimum 50 wins in career)

Pedro Martinez ... 166-67 (.712) 2.59 ERA
Mike Mussina ... 199-109 (.646) 3.51
Kevin Brown ... 197-131 (.600) 3.17 ERA
Roger Clemens ... 309-160 (.658) 3.19 ERA
Randy Johnson ... 229-114 (.667) 3.10 ERA
Greg Maddux ... 288-163 (.638) 2.89 ERA
Tom Glavine ... 251-157 (.615) 3.43 ERA
Curt Schilling ... 163-117 (.582) 3.33 ERA
Tim Hudson ... 79-33 (.705) 3.27 ERA

I voted for Martinez. Hands down. Easiest question I've had to answer all week.

In their prime?

I, too, have to go with Pedro. The L.A. Dodgers must feel like total chumps for trading him to Montreal for Delino DeShields. Worst. Trade. Ever. I’m not sure Pedro is still in his prime, but he still has some of the filthiest stuff in baseball. If it weren’t for a history of injury problems, there’s no telling just how much better his record would be. When Pedro is on, his stuff is unhittable. Plus, he’s got the whole intimidation factor working to his favor.

Trailing just behind:

Randy Johnson
Greg Maddux
Roger Clemens

If the minimum 50-games pitched stipulation wasn’t included, I would have picked Mark Prior. Yeah, I know. I sound like a total homer. But, Prior hasn’t even reached his prime yet and is already dominating the competition. And he just turned 23. If I was going to build my pitching staff around any current player, he’s the first guy I would want on my team. It’s scary to think just how good he can be.

I didn't know whether i should start a MLB thread, so I'm continuing this one, N.C. move if you want/need to (IMG:style_emoticons/mediablvd/smile.gif)

I grew up in Houston and my dad works for MLB and is assigned to the 'Stros so we're all excited about the big news:

QUOTE
Astros land a Rocket: Roger that!

...Clemens received endorsements from two staples in the Houston community for the last decade and a half -- Craig Biggio and Jeff Bagwell, who together have 29 years of Astros baseball under their belts.

The two normally stoic players did not attempt to hide their excitement over Monday's announcement.

...With a rotation that includes Clemens, Pettitte, Roy Oswalt and Wade Miller, the Astros arguably are the favorites to win the National League Central after two years of second-place finishes.

\"You look at those four horses,\" Biggio said. \"Wade Miller's your fourth starter. That's a nice thing to have right there. Goodness gracious.\"

The 38-year-old Biggio is happy to welcome Clemens to the Astros for another reason, too.

\"He is now the oldest man on the team,\" Biggio said. \"I'm more excited about that.\"

Here's hoping this new line-up will pull the 'stros from their slump and finally get us further than the 1st round of the play-offs - we've waited long enough!!!

And maybe this year we'll get some players to the All-Star Game [especially since it's in Houston this year!]
