"Bottom Feeders" receives Aloha Accolade Award

The Honolulu International Film Festival 2009 has bestowed the Aloha Accolade Award for Excellence in Filmmaking to OIC Production’s pilot project Bottom Feeders.

Per Festival Manager, Jenner Costello: “Our judges felt that your film demonstrated superior and standout filmmaking and is deserving of one of our most esteemed awards. Your film was among the very best of several hundreds of films submitted from over 30 countries around the world.”

Bottom Feeders was written by Ray Chang and stars Terry Chen as “Terry” and Ryan Scott Greene as “Duke” - wannabe producers without money or a project to produce. Knowing “sex sells” and reality shows are the future (and the cheapest way to hit it big) they brainstorm an idea for a reality show about strippers.

Bottom Feeders is their journey pitching the idea, raising the funding and entering the seedy underworld of strip clubs while dealing with conflicting values, relationships and personal issues. Terry is married to Kailee, (Mia Riverton) a lawyer who is pressuring him to take over the role of bread winner so she can quit her job and they can start a family. Duke is a womanizer who is quickly using up his trust fund and his family’s patience. They both desperately need the reality show to succeed at all costs.

Barbara Keegan, Roger Lenwood, Jules Flemming, Melissa Labute, Jeannie Sakata, Bruce Kirby, Marieh Delfino, Teresa De Fonte, Stewart Mityas, Charles Carpenter and Jennia Fredrique round out the cast.

The low-budget pilot was directed by Minh Collins in November 2007. Director of Photography Emile Haris and his team shot it using two Panasonic HD cameras concurrently over three days and multiple locations in southern California including The Little Bar and The Metro, both in Culver City and California Girls in Anaheim. Bottom Feeders was produced by Ray Chang and Minh Collins, casting by Neely Gurman and edited by Minh Collins, Rachel Pearl and Emil Haris under the OIC Productions banner.

Bottom Feeders is being shopped around by Ray Chang as a potential cable television series. Next up for OIC Productions is “Hit List,” a dark action comedy currently in preproduction with principal photography slated in early 2009

Congratulations to Bottom Feeders Cast and Crew on receiving the Aloha Accolade Award for Excellence in Filmmaking by the 2009 Honolulu International Film Festival. The festival runs March 6-8, 2009 with the award being presented during the Closing Night Awards Ceremony on March 8 at the beautiful and historic Hawaii Theater in the heart of Honolulu.

Stay tuned for more information on OIC’s blog.

Jeepers Creepers 3: Cathedral

According to Moviehole, a third film is in the works, to be written and directed by Victor Salva.[3] It also states that the film will see release direct-to-video[4] The film is scheduled for release in 2011. [5] Recently Victor Salva told Moviehole that the film may actually get a theatrical release, and that the film might bring back characters from the past two films. The film has a tentative title of Jeepers Creepers 3: Cathedral [6] According to Rotten Tomatoes, Ray Wise will reprise his role from the second movie. Gina Philips, who played Trish in the original film, will return as well. Brandon Smith who portryaed Sgt. Davis Tubbs in the first installment is slated to return to the franchise as well. Marieh Delfino is also rumored to return who played Rhonda Truitt in Jeepers Creepers 2.
The story picks up where Jeepers Creepers II leaves off. A prologue set in the Old West will precede the story, where Trish Jenner has a teenage son named Darry, after her brother. She has a recurring dream about her son falling to a fate all too similar to that of his uncle. It is also confirmed that The Creeper will be using his infamous truck.

Ok the screencap where she is being carried to the car. Did Marieh wear the skirt to some function before? I could have sworn I've seen it before.

Yes she did. I was wondering if anyone else would notice that. I think on indie films, the actors use their own wardrobes sometimes. Good eye Val! (IMG:style_emoticons/mediablvd/wink.gif)

Marieh's film Penance is being screened at Cannes Film Festival this week where it hopes to find a buyer for the film.

QUOTE
Cannes One-Sheet: Penance

Jake Kennedy's next feature film, Penance, is being shopped at Cannes while we speak, and as a result the official sales one-sheet for the film has reared its head!

The film stars Marieh Delfino, Tony Todd, Tracy Coogan, Eve Mauro, Lochlyn Munro, Michael Rooker, Alice Amter, and James Duval.

Check the poster out after the plot crunch.

With unrelenting suspense and terror, Penance is the tale of a young, demure single mother, Amelia (Marieh Delfino), who hits upon hard times and decides to take her future into her own hands by taking up the one profession that can promise fast cash for a sexy girl like her - becoming a stripper.

Everything is going well until Suzy her stripper friend is beaten up on a job and recruits Amelia to take her place in a high-class strip job that night. Reluctantly Amelia takes the job, only to find that the job isn’t everything that it seems.

Driven to a strange location by a dark and mysterious man (Tony Todd) and confronted by a grizzled hit man (Michael Rooker), Amelia’s world is turned upside down as a case of mistaken identity leads her to be taken captive and forced to confront her sins – the sins of her mind, body and soul.

Her captor (the mind bending Graham McTavish), is intent on one thing and one thing only – to purify Amelia and the other women in his incarceration. It’s time for them to pay their Penance!

Exclusive: 13 QUESTIONS WITH JAKE KENNEDY, Director of PENANCE
Friday, May 15, 2009 08:06 PM Matt Molgaard Fearful Features
As a participant in the second FANGORIA BLOOD DRIVE (released on DVD in 2005), filmmaker Jake Kennedy quickly made our watch list. As his career has blossomed over the past few years, Kennedy has now completed his second feature film, PENANCE. FANGORIA is proud to be presenting a special screening of the film on May 30th as a part of our MIDNITE MADNESS series at The Fine Arts Theatre in Beverly Hills, California.

We recently caught up with Jake for a round of 13 QUESTIONS for Fango readers to get better aquainted.

FANGORIA: What kind of educational background do you have?
JAKE KENNEDY: I was educated in England and went to boarding schools from the age of 10. I then went to university and got a degree in Psychology and Cartography. Very handy!

FANGORIA: I know you’ve got a history in the marketing/sales field, how does having that experience help you in the film industry?

JAKE KENNEDY: It has given me an edge over a lot of other screenwriters/film makers. I feel that it gives me an ability to stand up and actually sell my project. It means being able to give a pitch in front of a room of people or picking up the phone and calling people to raise some money. It also allows me to view my projects through business eyes as well as from a creative/visionary point of view.

FANGORIA: Your shorts BLACK and WE ALL FALL DOWN turned quite a few heads. What have those films done for your career?

JAKE KENNEDY: I made BLACK in Australia as calling card for the US before I moved here. That helped me establish some credibility with a couple of producers here. WE ALL FALL DOWN went on to win 13 International awards and definitely helped act as my calling card to Hollywood. It got me two of the top 2 agencies in town fighting over me and then a ton of meetings all over town. It also showed people that I have what it takes to get the job done (in horror) in a very effective way. It, along with the experience I had garnered in the industry in such low budget horror outfits such as the Asylum, convinced one producer that I had the chops to make the step to a feature and they commissioned me to write a low budget zombie script, that ultimately went on to become DAYS OF DARKNESS .So a good short, used and marketed well, will go a long way.

FANGORIA: I want to touch on DAYS OF DARKNESS. What was it like transitioning from short films to feature length pictures, and what kind of new obstacles did you face?

JAKE KENNEDY: Luckily I spent a year interning at companies like Raw Nerve (Eli Roth’s horror production company) and The Asylum, where I saw first hand how to make and how not to make low budget horror features. So when I went to talk to this producer (Kurt Anderson), I told him what I believed to be the best way to go about making a low budget horror film (one location, small cast etc). It’s basic stuff, but I watched the Asylum do it ‘wrong’ every time – eg 9 locations in 12 days, 40 actors, 35mm, short ends, different stock etc. So that convinced him that I knew what I was talking about, and my short convinced him I could deliver on the directing side. The obstacles were of course greater than they are on a short as you are playing with larger amounts of money that isn’t yours! So as a writer/director, I was highly accountable to the producers, which led to some tension as they didn’t always agree as to how they wanted their money spent! Plus logistically, there’s so much more to do. But you also have the luxury of hiring more people to take care of more stuff, so I actually had less to do than as a writer/director/producer, which was great, as it allowed me more time to work with my DP (Brandon Trost – HALLOWEEN II and CRANK II) on how we were going to shoot the film.

FANGORIA: DAYS OF DARKNESS was received pretty well- did you expect that kind of embrace, or were you surprised by the success of the film?

JAKE KENNEDY: It went on to win 5 awards and accolades, which is a great testament to the film and everyone involved. I was happy with the result. It’s a kind of old school, tongue firmly in cheek, B-movie zombie film that is supposed to entertain. Saying that, it didn’t please the zombie purists as the zombies are not ‘true’ zombies. But that aside, and because of that, I think it reached a larger audience and was justified in selling to over 20 territories and getting a Lions Gate release.

FANGORIA: Your latest feature is a pretty hardcore piece entitled PENANCE, which stars Marieh Delfino (JEEPERS CREEPERS 2), Graham McTavish (RAMBO), Michael Rooker (HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER) and Tony Todd (CANDYMAN). Give the readers at home a little background on both the film and the experience of working with such a stellar cast.

JAKE KENNEDY: After waiting in vain for the phone to ring after DAYS OF DARKNESS was released, I realized another film wasn’t going to drop into my lap immediately. So after about a year, I basically said **** it, no one’s going to give me a job directing their film in the immediate future, so I now must put on my producer cap and go and raise some funds so I can go and make my own movie. So step one was: what kind of film? One that sells! It must be commercial, no artsy rubbish. Therefore must have boobs, blood, gore and a great cast. Strippers sprang to mind as a great ‘hook’ to let me begin my screenwriting journey. Then I heard about this character when I was on holiday in Australia. He was ‘outed’ by the press when I was there. He basically was an OBGYN who, over 15 years, sexually abused and mutilated over 300 women, and had got away with it (check out this FOX NEWS clip). What a great bad guy!

So I built a fictional character around this guy, added in some strippers, plus elements from a couple of great films I loved (‘Wolf Creek’ and ‘House of Whipchord’), mixed them all up and came up with my idea. I started to pitch it to friends and family and the next thing I know I had pledges of cash to make the film. So I made the bold move of starting the script and setting a production date. From the day I began writing the script to the day we started shooting was 2 months exactly! I have to say that I was surprised to get my first choices for almost all my characters on the film because I thought the script would have been a little too hardcore for some of the talent. But it turned out that people like Graham McTavish and Michael Rooker lapped this stuff up, as it gave them an opportunity to have some fun in the genre, so they signed on immediately! They were all treats to work with. I got lucky! When Michael Rooker came onto set, I had to tell him I was a big fan of his, ever since I went to see HENRY at the theaters all those years ago.

FANGORIA: You incorporated some nice graphic gore into DAYS OF DARKNESS, but with PENANCE you really outdid yourself. Did you always intend to go farther with your next feature, or was it just a natural outcome of the storyline?

JAKE KENNEDY: I am definitely of the opinion that you need to make films that stand out, and even garner a little controversy. What’s the point otherwise? Do you want your film to fade into the background of the low budget horror deluge/glut, or do you want to open people’s eyes a little and affect them while they are watching, like I was affected as a child by films like THE EXORCIST, NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON and THE THING? So I picked the latter. Of course I could have toned the film’s content down a little, shot it a different way, but I made the film for the hardcore horror fans out there, not my friends and neighbors - who all walked out of a screening I had recently as they were too shocked by the content. Three of my neighbors are still not speaking to me and my family!

FANGORIA: What are the plans for the picture and when can fans expect to be able to get their hands on it?

JAKE KENNEDY: The film is screening at Cannes this week and is then selling overseas through Quantum Releasing. I have three offers on the table for domestic right now, but none of them will get me my investor’s money back. One of them is a prestigious release and would get the film out there everywhere, but I can’t do that to my friends and family as I know they won’t see a dime of their money back due to the crappy nature of the deal. So I’m still searching for the right deal that will get me cash and a wide release.

FANGORIA: You’ve written and directed works outside of the horror genre, but as of late it seems you’ve stuck to the gruesome side of cinema; do you plan on continuing to focus on horror primarily?

JAKE KENNEDY: The low budget indie horror market is taking a beating right now, so I’m looking to branch out into family comedies and talking animal movies.

FANGORIA: I know you’ve already won many awards for your work, but is there any one award that you feel is especially significant, maybe for personal reasons?

JAKE KENNEDY: When I won best short horror film at Screamfest it made me smile within as BLACK made it in there in 2003 a month after I arrived in the country. When it didn’t win, I then vowed to myself to try harder, and be better at my craft and come back with something better and creepier. I guess I managed that 2 years later and went on to win that prize! Now I just have to do that with my feature!

FANGORIA: You're well known for being able to make the most of a films budget, but what would you do differently if you had unlimited funds at your disposal? What kind of film would you make, and who would you cast?

JAKE KENNEDY: I would love to be given a shot at resurrecting the ALIEN series. A prequel is definitely on the cards and I have a great idea. Then to have the budget to really play and be able to create something highly memorable which people can enjoy for years to come really appeals. To be able to tap into a huge built in audience and get your work seen would be amazing. Plus being able to deliver a highly suspenseful, creepy and scary movie with some solid lead actors like Rachel McAdams, James McAvoy and Shia LeBouf would be amazing.

FANGORIA: There are countless aspiring script writers and directors out there reading this, what do you say to those looking to successfully break into the industry with true quality work but are restricted with a limited budget?

JAKE KENNEDY: I would say, learn every trick you can about making a film work on a very low budget, as it builds the skill set that will allow you to make bigger budget films look even bigger when you get the chance. That starts with shorts. Pump them out. Digital technology today allows you to do that cheaply. Hands on experience is also key. Go and learn from people who are better than you, so you can see how they do it – intern, shadow, work on sets etc. Then I would suggest, learn how to write. That’s key to being able to get to direct your own stuff. It also allows you to control the budget of your film and keep it low by being able to write out explosions and gun fights during the Mardi Gras in exchange for a one location set up with a few actors and a close quarters knife fight. I would also suggest putting some money and effort into then creating a calling card piece for yourself to showcase your skills as a writer/director on a low budget. People need to be able to see that you can deliver the goods under extreme low budget circumstances. Then win some awards as that gives you credibility that might make the difference between someone looking at the film when it arrives on their desk and them tossing it. Then, while you wait around for years for something to happen, I suggest you train and get some kind of highly skilled job that can allow you to pay your bills while you sit around. Sound engineer/recordist, sound designer – something like that. Everyone in Hollywood has a video camera and a Mac with Final Cut Pro, and they all claim to be expert videographers and editors. Not everyone can say they are the best sound designer in town. This kind of skill also allows you to hang around sets networking and meeting the right people. Then seek work in TV as it pays and is regular!

FANGORIA: What's the next project in the works?

JAKE KENNEDY: Myself and Dave Gabroe (ZOMBIE HONEYMOON) are teaming up with 3 other hot, up and coming film makers and are creating a Master’s of Horror type series of 5 low budget horror features that we hope will take the genre in a new direction – moving the genre ‘Fearward’, we call it. We’re expecting to make an announcement shortly.

Looks like the same dress she wore while out with Majandra earlier this spring. I like it.

I like that dress too Keri, especially the style of the sleeves.

There's a couple clips from Marieh's movie Lure on youtube. You only see Marieh for a second in the first clip.

Also, it looks like Bottom Feeders is being shown at the Honolulu Int. Film Festival in Feb.

I also found this info on a short Marieh did with Doris Roberts that showed at Cannes in 2007. I don't think I'd ever heard anything about this before. It's called "The Truth and Nothing but the Truth"

Director: Anne Goursaud
Starring: Marieh Delfino, Myles Cole, Alex Weed, Peter Musante, Robert Raad
Genre: Romantic Comedy

QUOTE
In-a-nutshell:
Marieh Delfino stars as Lucia, a witty and vibrant girl who seems to have it all: beauty, brains, a successful job at a trendy boutique and even three suitors all vying for her love and attention. One morning, however, Lucia wakes up to find herself in a funk, a downward spiral of despair where she can't answer the simple question, "Who am I?"

Lucia devises a plan to ask each of her suitors - Rodney (the egotistical piece of eye candy), Mitchell (the offbeat musician) and Will (the sensitive poet) - to write a letter to her describing who she is to them. However, when her brilliant scheme backfires, Lucia is left to wonder if she's been looking for answers in the wrong places.

Goursaud's short is a definite crowd pleaser with its quirky cast and subtle humor. There's even a very brief, yet hilarious, cameo from "Everybody Loves Raymond" star Doris Robert as a tarot-reading grandma. Is there anything better?
