Right all, dykedyke has got me thinking about the portrayal of lesians in the TV and Films and I was thinking that all in all I have to say that I do have a few favs so here goes if you had a top 10 lesbian portryals in films or TV what would they be ? wink.gif

For me its:

1. Gia - Angelina and Elizabeth all the way, Sad ending however

2. Foxfire - Not real lesbian content just subtext again angelina but so powerful and emotional

3. If these walls could talk 2 - Cant decided Sharon and Ellen, or Michelle and Chloe

4. When Night is Falling - Aww straight girl gone gay !

5. The Willow/Tara relationship - sooooo sweet, makes even the most slutish of us wanna settle down ?

6. Girl Thing with Elle mcPherson and kate Capshaw - terrible acting by Elle but Kate's ass more than makes up for it !

7. Did like the Weaver and Elizabeth in Er thing, but typical lesbian ending not happy !

8. Ellen - Need I say more

9. Better Than Choclate - Funny and that sofa scene yummmmm

10. Xena and Gabrielle - i know I face a barrage of abuse for this and I know they sold us out but I did like it, lesbian subtext and was funny.

If this was started elsewhere forgive me but I cant find it anywhere. Apologies if ist already started.
#1Crush
I would agree with all those you mentioned. The only other lesbian action I can even think of at the moment are in
Mulholland Drive
and
Bound.

Also... I would have to vote for the Michelle/Chloe pairing in If These Walls Could Talk 2 as the HOTTEST thing!!!
Bean
Amen to the Michelle/Chloe pairing - definitely the hottest in the film!!!

I also think Julianna Margulies/Kyra Sedgwick make a v. cute couple in What's Cooking? but there is not much action between them (mores a pity).

Otherwise I have to agree with the ones mentioned, Bound should be in my top 10. Also like Lisa Vidal with Laura Innes in ER, if only they were given more time, akin to maybe Carters or Abby's private lives.

bound
treading water
it's in the water

I thought Chutney Popcorn was a pretty decent movie, especially since Jill Hennessey was in it. That was good enough to get me watching.

The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love was really cute.

Others Mothers was an afterschool special that was on a while back that turned out to be pretty decent. Joanna Cassidy and Meredith Baxter were in that one.

Pam Grier has been quite a few movies, way back in the day, that has lesbian content, though they were more exploitation movies. I still love them.
bronzefox
Good choices, traveller. I love Chloe and Ellen in IFTWCT2 and even though I thought that Better Than Chocolate could be a bit silly at times, that couch scene and Christina Cox totally made up for it! grin.gif
ripple
Has anyone seen the movie "Relax, It's Just Sex"? I thought it was great. It had Lori Petty in it with some other good actors too but I can't remember their names now.
joanna73
kissing jessica stein.....

i think it was funny, sympathetic...adorable, yet serious enough, to show that someone who you love doesnt necessarily means guy or girl...that the heart dictates who you can love and should love. not society and its trappings traditions.
beatie
Such a good topic, sooo hard to pick:

1. When Night is Falling - our first date movie so special and a sweet film
2. Kissing Jessica Stein - very real
3. Entre Nous - classy
4. The Hunger - just for Deneuve and Suse *dribble*
5. Mulholland Drive - I think my femme bias is showing, yummy
6. Bound - how good was that?
7. Portrait of a Marriage - TV but weren't they pretty together?
8. Oranges are Not the Only Fruit - TV again but also close to the bone
9. Tipping the Velvet - guilty pleasure
10. Desert Hearts - parts make me cringe because they are not faithful to the book, but it has to be there just for Patricia Charbonneau's breasts which are fabulous.
Gloria
nobody for this movie?
kmc
how could i have forgotten High Art....what an incredibly romantic, tragedy...brava to Ally Sheedy. This was a fab. movie!!!
traveller75
God reading all yours Ive realised there are so many that Ive left out,

Bound, - that Ive been thinking about you all day scene so got me going in the cinema. Might have to edit the top 10, how on earth could I forget Gina ?

Kissing Jessica Stein was lovely, and again its the not in your face sex scene but the eroticism of the moment when she touches her leg, very sweet film big thimbs up for that beatie.

Havent seen Chutney popcorn, have to track it down on ebay, theres a few others as well that I havent seen, damn and I thought I was the original lesbian perv tracking down every single thing with a whiff of a lesbian in it wink.gif

High Art, fab, but sad ending, now how about Radha Mitchell, in the L Word second season ? I hear shes gay in real life anyone confirm this ?

Whats Potrait of a Marriage Beatie ? never heard of, was it a seen on Tv thing ?
Shynnagh
So far everyone's said some excellent films. There's also:

Lost and Delirious
The Girl
Claire of the Moon
But I'm a Cheerleader
Wild Side
Sister My Sister (creepy but with some decent scenes anyway)
Wild Things (don't forget that pool scene)
Sirens
Shelby
I just loved But I'm a Cheerleader. Sister My Sister was good too, but you are right, it was a little creepy but still a good movie to watch. What made it more interesting was that it was an actual story. The other movie that I'm still trying to figure out is Heavenly Creatures. Were they gay or just very disturbed girls?
Gargy
I am so behind. I need to catch-up. I know I want to see Lost and Delirious, When the night Falls, and so many more........too many to name right now. But I've seen the following:

Gia
Frida
Kissing Jessica Stein
Wild Things
The Hours

Oh and the Gay male TV Moive (you can catch it on LifeTime here and there): Doing time on Mullahand Drive (I belive that's the title, but it's one Jim Carey's first movies. It also stars the "mousy" girl that played the receptionist on "Don't tell mom the babysitter is dead")

All the lesbian LifeTime movies:

The Truth about Jane
What makes a family
An unexpected love

I suck! dupe.gif

So no one has seen Relax, It's Just sex? I really recommend it!!

What about Fire? it's set in India, directed by Indo-Canadian Deepa Mehta (sp?)...it was banned in India.

It was a mini series about the life of Vita Sackville-West starring Janet McTeer and Kathryn Harrison - Rex's daughter. Most kewl.

For any of you little dykelettes there's a place you can start for lesbian movie content. It by no means has everything, but probably a lot more than the youngsters have ever heard of. It's here. God listen to me, I sound like great aunt lesbo yoda.
Kathis
These are some of the movies I got, some are good others are eh less good, lol

¤Show me love (original swedish title '****ing Åmål')

¤ The incredible Adventures of Two Girls in Love

¤ Better than chocolate

¤ Fire

¤ Bound

¤ The Wild side

¤ Richards secret

¤ Lost and Delirious

¤ But I'm a cheerleader

I'm trying to get Pourquoi pas moi with english subtitles and If these walls could talk 2 and all the other movies mentioned in this post grin.gif

I saw it on Sundance. They aired the film and a little behind the scenes documentary about the film. They showed the people in India's reactions to the film. They were outraged. They were tearing down the film posters and stepping all over them. I thought it was a good film.

Cheers for the heads up, now gotta check off my collection.

Whats Cookin...had whatshername and Keira sedwig or what ever her name is.Shes' married to Kevin Bacon.

Seeing as we're talking about great lesbian moments on screen and the box, there's a wonderful little music vid that's been knocking around literally for years. If you haven't seen it you should have a look, there is much smoochie goodness to be had. The big old dykes among us might like to try the challenge of identifying the movies before you read the credits. It's Vaxen's Soft Kiss.

Yummy!

Slicey
I'd have to say that ITWCT2, TTV, and Bound are in the top 3 for me. I'd have to think a little while about a top 10 list however, I don't even know if I've seen 10 lesbian movies that are good enough to make the list...

...I'll get back to this.

But I'm a Cheerleader and Better than Chocolate are cute, Bound is erotic but a really baaaad film, Gia I just love for Angelina's sake - that woman is just gorgeous, and my favourite has to be - though not technically a lesbian film - Fried Green Tomatoes. I know that the love between to two is only underlying in the movie, but it would still be one of my choices for a date film... smile.gif

Another excellent one is the German film Aimee & Jaguar, I really recommend that one! It's a love story set during WW II - absolutely fantastic - and true - story. Should be available with subtitles in the US.

Anyone who has not seen this film should definitely see it. It does have English subtitles. I ordered it not too long ago on DVD and have watched it over and over again. Very moving film and the bonus material on the DVD was great.

Another movie that I can't say I was a big fan of was Personal Best. Some people have loved it, and some people just hate it.
bronzefox
Salmonberries which had hearthrob.gif k.d. lang hearthrob.gif and that librarian in it. Also Boys Don't Cry which would be considered a "transgendered" film but I love Hillary Swank and Chloe Sevigny's sex scene. grin.gif
justine
Wow, you've hit most of my favorite films with les/bi content. Definitely I agree with Aimee & Jaguar and Gia, though neither are particularly happy endings. Same with Heavenly Creatures, which also had some beautiful moments juxtaposed with some really hard to watch ones. As far as TV goes, I'm totally sucked into All My Children's Bianca and her complicated love life.
marinasexy
All over me
Lost and delirious
The L Word
When night is falling
Aimee and Jaguar
The truth about Jane
But I'm a cheerleader
etc....

great stuff!

oh and I love the Willow and Tara relationship, it was wonderfull. smile.gif
Oh and Jessie and Katie from Once and Again, loved that too!
sugarshaz
Show Me Love (this movie hit me like no other. It was so real to me!)
Bound
The L Word
Heavenly Creatures
But I'm A Cheerleader
All Over Me
Aimee and Jaguar
Monster

I would say that to me, one of the most sensual scene between 2 women is in "Wild Side" (unrated) between Joan Chen and Anne Heche... So "****ing cute"... And very hot! But I like also "Clair of the moon", "Gia", "When the night is falling", "Mullholland Drive" (despite the cruelty somewhere...), "Better than chocolate", "Lost and delirious", "Fire"... And I am definitely a fan of the "L word".

I don't know how I would rate them as far as top 10 goes, but for me, my favorites are:

Xena and Gabrielle (hardcore fan)
Tara and Willow
Claire of the Moon
Desert Hearts
Better Than Chocolate
Jadzia Dax and Lenara Kahn on DS9 (just one kiss, but one hell of a kiss)
Bound (I wore out the tape on the bed love scene... LOL)
Mel and Lindsey on Queer As Folk
The L-Word (of course)
Fried Green Tomatoes (subtexty)

the other side of the coin, as in, the DVD I wish I hadn't bought: Siren

****ing amal smile.gif
boys don't cry bawl.gif bawl.gif

i'm confused and slightly unsure of 'subtext'. is it a good thing? I mean xena had subtext that was handled well.....i think...except for the end.....but i don't know, subtext really craps me sometimes....like in charlies angels full throttle where they're washing the car and kind hugging all wet and stuff. Is that subtext? or is that just exploitation?....did bend it like beckham have abit of subtext?
confused! someone help me! confused.gif

oh and didnt anyone else find lost and delirious a tad grating....especially near the end with all the shots of the bird soaring off?..... rolleyes.gif

For me, the subtext in Xena was a welcome change in a time when lesbians were not shown on TV. You could read what you wanted into it, and I read it that they were lovers. It made me feel all warm and tingly... LOL.

Although I will admit that by the end, I was disappointed that Tapert and Company didn't have the cajones to give them at least one honest kiss; though the kiss from the Ring Arc (the most romantic three episodes of that whole series in my book) was as close as you can get without being tonguish and blatant.

It wasn't until I started shopping online that I was able to expand my movie library with more overt portrayals. That's one attraction about TLW for me... the ladies are out and there is no question about it.

I actually found a lot of Lost and Delirious grating. There are so many sad lesbian movies out there. Can't bear the lesbian must die in the end film anymore. There used not to be anything out there that was actually very positive, but after nearly a decade and a half of attending the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Film Festival in Sydney every year I've seen a lot of really worthwhile lesbian content - and sorry must admit a lot of absolute trash as well.

I really wish I'd been twelve when Xena was released, I'd have loved it, as a grown up I found it difficult to watch - and my wife wouldn't let me. She seemed to think I was watching it for the wrong reasons; she was right. drool.gif Willow is the best thing that's ever happened to lesbian visibility on the box, especially as she wasn't a clone or a butch, not that there's anything wrong with that, but she was a very real dorky girl people could identify with and have sympathy for, well maybe until she tried to destroy the world.

The great thing about The L Word is it's depicting lesbians as we are, diverse and kinda ordinary, in a t.v. kinda way of course. O.K. so they're grooming them more than many of us do in reality, who cares, it's t.v. and the women are gorgeous and good to watch and it's sexy. If they ever follow-up the original Celluloid Closet - a must see for all - The L Word should definitely be shown as the greatest milestone in lesbian visibility yet.

I saw Sister my sister many years ago and it freaked me out big time! Yes it was based on an actual story and I guess I couldn't even get my head around that having a few sisters myself. lol Brilliant acting though and that's how I became a fan of Joely Richardson. I like british actresses. I LOVE Tipping the velvet!! I saw the british version and I want to buy the dvd of the us version. UK girls seem pretty cool about their sexuality but it depends on the person too.

I must say that I really enjoyed It's in the Water and If Theses Walls Could Talk 2.Chloe and Michelle really heat things up.Way to go girls  ;)

Chloe was sooo cute in that although I'm attracted to girls who I guess would be "labeled" femme but she was still really hot. I liked the ellen/sharon as well. The first story between the older women was very touching as well. I can't imagine what it must have been like to have been lesbian in the 50's and before!

I couldn't even imagine what it would be like for the lesbians in the 50's either!!Must have been quite hard for them and yes, that story was very touching and quite sad.

I haven't seen a lot of lesbian themed movies. I saw 'Mulholland Drive'(I'm still confused about this movie, the scenes were hot but I have no clue what it's about), 'Frida', and 'Lost and Delirious' (overdramatic, but Jessica Pare is hot!!).

My personal fave though is Willow and Tara. So cute and awkward and geeky, just like me. Although I did really like Kennedy too. She was hot and I got to see her bed Willow. (Not that that's what matters to me) wink.gif
I also liked Jessie and Katie on 'Once and Again'. Why did they cancel it just as I was getting really into it. confused.gif Bastards.

I really liked Mulholland Dr., I think I have it finally figured out, I hope!
I also loved Gia...

TV: I totally loved Willow and Tara, I don't care much (read: at all) for Kennedy. I love Xena & Gabrielle and right now, well.. The L word! grin.gif

Right now it's all I can think of...
