Most of you know I'm a bit obsessed and have met him a few times. I'm going to LA at the end of the month for the Ghost of the Robot concert, so I'll be sure to post pics here, and hopefully, some fun stories.

Post your stories and pics here...

First Buffy Con I ever attended (Tampa Vulkon July 03),I got kinda carried away at the afternnoon auction and bought a seat next to James at the evening Banquet. Spent a good hour listening to the man hold court, entertaining a table full of smitten ladies with stories,antedotes,opinions,jokes,theories...the man loves to talk, and fortunately he is intelligent,well-read,humorous and generous. He just loved "The Battle of the Network ShowTunes" that started up between the tables. He said it was the most fun he'd had at a convention this year! The time flew past and none of us will ever forget it. What a great memory. smile.gif

At DragonCon,I told him I was bringing my 15 year old son to see his first concert...Ghost of the Robot. James smiled and said "We're going to rock your soul!". And,in spite of others who noticed technical problems,Jake and I were front and center having just the time of our lives! cool.gif

This is James and I watching "The Battle of the Network theme songs as it raged between competing tables at the Tampa Vulkon banquet. Then next day,James said at the Q&A:He was speaking about why he thought it was great that there are Buffy-specific conventions: "I don't know how many people were at the Banquet last night...that rocked!!! We started the "Battle of the tv theme songs" between tables and I was thinking"THIS is "Buffy"! THIS situation was created by my boss, too."
LisaKay

Behry, you really wouldn't because he is so sweet and gentle with his fans and if he senses you are nervous,he goes out of his way to calm you. I found him to be a real gentleman...in his down-to-earth- ness and concern for others.
JulieB
I've had the pleasure of briefly meeting James at Shore Leave last year and this year at Buffy Vulkon in Cleveland. He was very sweet and completely makes you feel at ease.

Berengaria and Lisa, nice pics smile.gif
Berengaria
Thanks,Julie. smile.gif

Loving the pictures of James & the band,LisaKay. The great joy and enthusiasm they have when they play just makes for an exhilarating performance. I can't wait for them to come "East of the Mississippi again"...though I guess I'll have to. bawl.gif

Hope this isn't too long-winded,but here's my report of the Vulkon Banquet:

I was at the banquet at the Tampa Vulcon convention on Saturday night!

I was very interested in the person who was sitting on James Marsters left-hand side...Why? because it was me! I got an invitation to be at his table by winning it at the auction earlier in the day.

What can I tell you about it?

Did you think he was charming, intelligent, well read, opinionated, serious, silly, fun and generous...you were right!

He did most of the talking, giving everyone at our end of the table plenty of opportunity to ask questions and interact with him. He said he was not at all upset that he didn't get an Emmy nomination. He said many people have commented to him that he gets more publicity from NOT being nominated. He was unhappily amazed that "Once More With Feeling"- the Buffy musical episode hadn't been nominated. He thought it was as good as tv can get and he is very proud of it. He calls it his "favorite episode".

He said he loved "The Honeymooners" with Jackie Gleason & Art Carney and had always though tv could never do better than that. But when he watched "Once More with Feeling" he thought"This is it! We have done better". He also said when he has actor friends deride him for being on "Buffy,The Vampire Slayer" he brings them over and makes them watch this episode and they always get very impressed and become regular fans of the show after.

He talked about liking the original Star Trek, especially Mr. Spock. He said he had heard that at times Leonard Nimoy had resented being known primarily as that character. James felt actors who feel like that about it are wrong to do so. (I think he was trying to share that he felt proud to be identified with the role of "Spike"...though,of course,he has many, many different roles still to create). Later,a fan came up to the table to show him 2 Pez dispensers she had made. One was a "Spike" figure and one was a "Mr. Spock" figure. James praised her work and seemed to like them. She said he could have one. He chose the Mr.Spock one. She then asked him to pose for a picture next to the "Spike" one and ,as he did,he sucked in his cheeks and transformed into a "Spike" face that just matched the little Pez dispenser. It was kind of funny.

Then the table that had "Clem" James Leary sitting at it erupted in song. Specifically they screamed out the song from Gilligan's Island. That got a big laugh (bigger from James than anyone),then the table with Robin Atkins Downes stood up and responded with "The theme from the Brady Bunch". Our table went next but I don't remember what we sang because we were so bad and were giggling so much. As the other two tables continued their "battle of the tv show tunes" James said that this was the highlight of all the conventions he'd been to in the last year! We tried to think of another song to do but were coming up empty. James said we should all stand up and announce we were going to sing "Silent Night"...and then just be silent. But we didn't do it.

One of the girls at our table had postcards she had made for people to send in to Angel advocating for "Spike". Some of them were funny (Buffy saying"I'll get Spikey to do it,I can make him do anything!"...James said "Spikey...heh heh) and some were touching (Spike deserves more than a ghost of a chance...James said "Awww...when he saw that one. ). He talked about being in Europe this summer. He had really liked the food in Germany but one time he was served something he wasn't used to and couldn't make himself eat(I think it was some form of intestines)...I told him about a corn and cuttlefish pizza I had once had in Japan.

He said GOTR was thinking about touring Japan next year...or maybe back to England. Someone asked James if he would consider himself an extrovert. He said he was kind of half and half. That private, alone time was very important and necessary to him but that when he was out in public he found it easy to talk to people...like he was doing with all of us. Finally, the evening drew to a close and James was being whisked off to a different hotel...at a secret location. He excused himself, gave us that devastating smile one more time and left behind a tablefull of women with a dreamy look in their eyes,a blissful smile on their lips, and a life-time membership in the "James Marsters fan for Life" club.
LisaKay
Berengaria, thanks for sharing your story! Sounds like it so much fun! I think it would be cool to actually be able to sit down and talk to James. I'm jealous wink.gif
Berengaria
I'm jealous of you living in California...I'm sure you'll have more opportunities to see him and the band than us poor James-starved Floridians! lol.gif

I also asked James about the scene in "Chosen" where they are touching hands through the flames. I asked what we were supposed to know from seeing that. He said just that Spike was dying..burning up from the inside and that, though Buffy didn't "love" him, there was enough feeling between them that she didn't want to let him die alone and she held his hand through the fire even though it hurt! I said"It hurt? I didn't understand that. I had thought from the stunned look on her face that maybe she had felt his soul...beautiful and redeemed." He laughed and said "No....maybe she should have done more(here he made a pained face) "Ouch! Ouch! Ouch!".

It's funny though .. how James is adamant that Buffy doesn't love Spike.. while if you ask Jane Espensen the writer, she's proned to think otherwise. At the Harvest con, she feels strongly that Buffy does love Spike but doesn't "realise" it fully yet. wink.gif

~Ash
Berengaria
I think she missed that boat! tongue.gif

I'd like to see Spike with someone who could reaallly appreciate him.........maybe Angel?!!! grin.gif
AshBaby
Well I for one do think that Buffy is in denial... based on her failed rel'ships from S1 onwards, she can hardly appreciate someone who really cares for her.. except for someone who can't be with her.

Anyways, don't want to get into the anti or for Spuffy talk.. it can get so heated at times, and I'm not even much of a shipper person lol.gif

Well.. I don't think I'll ever see James in the near future again. For one thing, I'm broke, jobless and I'm not even in USA or UK!
*SIGH*

~Ash
Berengaria
You won't always be broke and jobless,Ash. And James has said he & the band are thinking of playing in Japan. So,keep your fingers crossed, you never know what may happen. I never in a million years thought James would come here to Florida...but I got lucky. Hopesomeday you will too.

And,my apologies to any Spuffies,I may have offended....I was totally one myself for the longest time but my heart got bruised once too often and I lost the feeling. I can totally appreciate and respect any diehard romantics that can still have hope though. So,peace and love to all fans of BTVS however you ship! cheers.gif
AshBaby
I don't like going to Japan... the language problem there is just frustrating. Even the hotel staff can hardly understand you - or they pretend not to.
And it takes like 2 hours to get from Narita airport to Tokyo.. and everything is so bloody expensive there!

When I have spare cash, I rather head to UK or USA.. it just makes travelling logistics so much easier.

My son also got to meet James. When we were walking away,Jake said to me in an impressed voice"Mom! He recognized you. (because we met a month earlier in Florida). I think that is the first time EVER jake thought I was "cool". lol.gif

Yes,he really makes you feel appreciated. I remember the last thing he said at the Buffy Q&A session at Dragon Con,when someone thanked him and the other cast members for coming to talk to us,he said"Thank you...you gave us lives." smile.gif

God I love this man. I have to meet him. smile.gif

Haunt
Hey gang, new to this particular board but I'm a long-time (and very vocal) member of The Big Bad Board (www.bigbad.net), and I've been a Spike fan since "School Hard".

Very briefly... met my fiance on the board I mentioned and we bonded initially over our shared love of the character of Spike and his journey toward/through redemption. We are both passionate fans, and at the recent Dragon*Con in Atlanta, GA we finally had the opportunity to meet James in person. We got the chance to tell him our story and invited him to the wedding in San Francisco. We don't honestly expect that he'll come, but it was important to us that we make the offer and let him know how important he's been in bringing the two of us together.
Berengaria
Howdy,Haunt...I am very familiar with your posts at the BBB,and I'd sure like to welcome you here. We're a very new board but lots of enthusiasm for James and all his projects, and I think you are just the person to lead us in some interesting speculations as the season of "Angel" progresses. Hope you'll hang around. smile.gif
Ash-Babe
Hi people

You guys are so lucky to have meet james.

I wanted to go to the show he is doing over here in the uk in may but they have sold out of tickets.

I'll have to wait for the next one and hope I can get tickets.

Would really like to meet him.

Speak soon

From Ash-Babe
Berengaria
Oh,Ash,I know how disappointed you must feel.... bawl.gif
hopefully he'll do some tv interviews or something......or you could just go hang around the entrance where he has to come in or leave....
Well, you're young and .as you said, there is always "next time".
spikessunflower
James is not doing many cons so the chances of meeting him are fewer than in the past sad.gif, anyway, I'm happy to hear news from the people who had actually met him.

Anita
Berengaria
I think he really likes doing Cons in general. He is taking a sort of break from them in 2004 because he wants to get a movie career started. I think you will probably have a chance,in the future, to see him. Hope so anyway. smile.gif
Berengaria
He's in Australia right this minute at a Con. Don't we have any members from Oz who can give us a report?!! grin.gif
AshBaby
If anybody has a James in Aus report, do post a link. I'd love to read it!

I've met James twice grin.gif
He's such a lovely nice guy!

Hi all.. WoW! It's been a year since this thread was updated...

Now I know you all were waiting for someone to report about last years Con. but unfortunately I was at home crying my eyes out coz there was no tickets left.. Like some of you here, I thought I would never get the chance to meet our Spikey/James.. but a few weeks ago one of my dreams came true... I got to meet him!!!! Even though it was only briefly that I got to talk to him one on one, it still made me feel like the happiest girl in the world, or should I say HE made me feel like the happiest girl in the world for those few breif moments. He is so sweet and he really listens to what you have to say and is genuenly interested.. I love that about him!!! At the end of our meet he could tell that I was getting nervous, so he took my hand and said it was really nice to me and just smiled. I melted then and there!! thud.gif
Berengaria
He has nice, warm hands, doesn't he? And he does just make meeting him such a pleasant thing that fans are happy to make repeat visits. And I really think it is not all about his good looks,it's his good heart that shines through. wink.gif
polia
Yeah.. I agree... smile.gif
Berengaria
I hear he gives great hugs too. Tho I haven't gotten one yet. Ah,well, maybe next time! wink.gif
polia
Yeah I thought about leaning over the table to get a hug, but I was to scared of being rejected! lol.gif
Berengaria
You wouldn't have been rejected by HIM but sometimes his assistants take their job REAL seriously. And if Julie Caitlin Brown was there, she would have given you skep.gif j/k
polia
lol.gif
Berengaria
The only thing I have ever heard him object to...and he has loudly and vocally is having his butt touched. Some people are so insane that they think it is acceptable to not only lay their hands on him but to actually pinch him. He sits down in photo sessions now because he is tired of having his butt hurt. That...to me...is just WAY over the line and I think some people need to be thrown right out of these Cons with no refund. sad.gif
polia
Aww... Poor James! hug.gif I think that is so rude to do to any stranger. I would slap a guy if he just came up and pinched me on the arse. I would never dream of doing that to a celebrity!
Berengaria
Absolutely. If it was a woman celebrity or any woman at all that it happened to, there would be a huge outcry. Just because he's a man,James is supposed to laugh it off...the thing that really, really torq's me is that he is so nice and sweet and giving to his fans....he really doesn't deserve to be treated like a piece of meat. tongue.gif

Ah,nuff of that....James says that the vast majority of his encounters with fans are really positive. smile.gif
