Hope this isn't too long-winded,but here's my report of the Vulkon Banquet:
I was at the banquet at the Tampa Vulcon convention on Saturday night!
I was very interested in the person who was sitting on James Marsters left-hand side...Why? because it was me! I got an invitation to be at his table by winning it at the auction earlier in the day.
What can I tell you about it?
Did you think he was charming, intelligent, well read, opinionated, serious, silly, fun and generous...you were right!
He did most of the talking, giving everyone at our end of the table plenty of opportunity to ask questions and interact with him. He said he was not at all upset that he didn't get an Emmy nomination. He said many people have commented to him that he gets more publicity from NOT being nominated. He was unhappily amazed that "Once More With Feeling"- the Buffy musical episode hadn't been nominated. He thought it was as good as tv can get and he is very proud of it. He calls it his "favorite episode".
He said he loved "The Honeymooners" with Jackie Gleason & Art Carney and had always though tv could never do better than that. But when he watched "Once More with Feeling" he thought"This is it! We have done better". He also said when he has actor friends deride him for being on "Buffy,The Vampire Slayer" he brings them over and makes them watch this episode and they always get very impressed and become regular fans of the show after.
He talked about liking the original Star Trek, especially Mr. Spock. He said he had heard that at times Leonard Nimoy had resented being known primarily as that character. James felt actors who feel like that about it are wrong to do so. (I think he was trying to share that he felt proud to be identified with the role of "Spike"...though,of course,he has many, many different roles still to create). Later,a fan came up to the table to show him 2 Pez dispensers she had made. One was a "Spike" figure and one was a "Mr. Spock" figure. James praised her work and seemed to like them. She said he could have one. He chose the Mr.Spock one. She then asked him to pose for a picture next to the "Spike" one and ,as he did,he sucked in his cheeks and transformed into a "Spike" face that just matched the little Pez dispenser. It was kind of funny.
Then the table that had "Clem" James Leary sitting at it erupted in song. Specifically they screamed out the song from Gilligan's Island. That got a big laugh (bigger from James than anyone),then the table with Robin Atkins Downes stood up and responded with "The theme from the Brady Bunch". Our table went next but I don't remember what we sang because we were so bad and were giggling so much. As the other two tables continued their "battle of the tv show tunes" James said that this was the highlight of all the conventions he'd been to in the last year! We tried to think of another song to do but were coming up empty. James said we should all stand up and announce we were going to sing "Silent Night"...and then just be silent. But we didn't do it.
One of the girls at our table had postcards she had made for people to send in to Angel advocating for "Spike". Some of them were funny (Buffy saying"I'll get Spikey to do it,I can make him do anything!"...James said "Spikey...heh heh) and some were touching (Spike deserves more than a ghost of a chance...James said "Awww...when he saw that one. ). He talked about being in Europe this summer. He had really liked the food in Germany but one time he was served something he wasn't used to and couldn't make himself eat(I think it was some form of intestines)...I told him about a corn and cuttlefish pizza I had once had in Japan.
He said GOTR was thinking about touring Japan next year...or maybe back to England. Someone asked James if he would consider himself an extrovert. He said he was kind of half and half. That private, alone time was very important and necessary to him but that when he was out in public he found it easy to talk to people...like he was doing with all of us. Finally, the evening drew to a close and James was being whisked off to a different hotel...at a secret location. He excused himself, gave us that devastating smile one more time and left behind a tablefull of women with a dreamy look in their eyes,a blissful smile on their lips, and a life-time membership in the "James Marsters fan for Life" club.
