Thanks once again to NancyAmazon for being kind enough to write this L Word FAQ. And my apologies to Nancy for updating it and messing with her hard work. For the observant amongst you, it should be easy to spot Nancy’s sections because they’re the succinct, informative and witty ones, and… yep, you guessed it… my contributions are the tedious and overly waffly bits. *g*
We’ve tried to anticipate any questions that you might have about the show, so we hope you find the information helpful. If after reading the FAQ list, your question remains unanswered, please ask it in this thread and a kind and knowledgeable poster who knows the answer will almost certainly help you out. :)

ABOUT THE SHOW AND CAST
THE SHOW
1. When does the new season start?
Four seasons of The L Word have been broadcast so far.
On March 8th 2007 Showtime confirmed their order for a fifth, twelve episode, season of TLW, which will be broadcast early in 2008. (According to HRC, S5 will premiere on Sunday 6th January 2008.) You can read Showtime's press release announcing the fifth season on PRNewswire: Five Times the Love! Lust! Laughs! Longing! SHOWTIME's THE L WORD® Returns for a Fifth Season, MiamiHerald.com.
So far, only a few international airdates for Season 4 have been released. You can find them on The L Word Online’s international airdates page.
2. When will The L Word screen in my country?
The L Word screening schedule is entirely up to the stations that buy the show internationally. The L Word Online has an international airdates section which tries to track airdates and inform viewers when the show will be aired and by whom.
3. Is The L Word available to buy on DVD?
Yes. You can find details of all TLW DVD releases in their various formats in ’The L Word’ Merchandise Store thread.
TVShowsOnDVD.com is a great place to check for future news about The L Word’s region 1 DVD release dates, special features etc.
4. Why don't the Season one DVDs contain the promised deleted scenes and bloopers?
No one knows.
Yes, they were advertised. No, nobody's sets actually contain them, no matter which DVD region your set is, so you were not personally ripped off if yours doesn't. The distributors probably made the decision based on the availability of the material. It sucks, but there's nothing we can do.
The bloopers or deleted scenes weren’t included in the S2 or S3 DVD box sets either, and nor, according to the information we currently have, are there any plans to included in them on the Season four sets either. :(
5. Is there a soundtrack album for The L Word?
Yes. There are five, in fact: The Season 1 soundtrack, Season 2 soundtrack, Season 2 Sessions - Original Score composed by ezgirl, the Season 3 soundtrack, and L Tunes: Music from and inspired by The L Word, all of which are available from all good retailers. You can find links to the relevant Amazon pages in ’The L Word’ Merchandise Store thread.
The list of tracks for the Season 1 soundtrack can be found here.
6. Is there an official guidebook to accompany the show?
Yes.
The L Word: Welcome to Our PlanetThere is also a rather more academic book about The L Word being published on 4 April 2006, called Reading The L Word: Outing Contemporary Television by Kim Akass (Editor), Janet McCabe (Editor), Sarah Warn (Introduction), which is a collection of essays looking at the impact that TLW has had on the lesbian community and how the show has been received by lesbians.

9. Who was the actor cast to play Tim before Eric Mabius got the role?
Scott Bairstow was originally cast as Tim Haspel. He’s pictured here in one of the early promo photos from season one:

The role was recast when Scott Bairstow was charged with statutory rape.
10. Are the actresses in The L Word actually gay?
Does it really matter? It does? Well, if you must know:
Leisha Hailey, who plays Alice, is openly lesbian. As is Daniela Sea, who joined the main cast in season three, to play the transgender character, Moira-Max.
Laurel Holloman is openly bisexual, married to a man, and is now a mother.
Karina Lombard is openly bisexual, but according to her July 2005 interview with Playboy magazine, filming sex scenes with Mia Kirshner has put a dampener on her girl-loving side. (Wha’? I’m not saying anything! :P)
Jennifer Beals, Erin Daniels, Pam Grier, Rachel Shelley and Sarah Shahi have stated categorically that they are straight. Although Erin has also said that she’s a ‘2’ on the Kinsey scale, so there's some hope there. *g*
Mia Kirshner has hinted on several occasions to being bisexual.
While some have reported that Katherine Moennig is gay, she has never publicly said so and has repeatedly said she does not wish to discuss or disclose her sexual orientation.
In an interview, Kelly Lynch, who plays Ivan, reported that almost no one in the cast is straight - regardless of appearances.
There have also been several guest stars on the show who are gay. Guin Turner (Gabby Deveaux), Jane Lynch (Joyce Wischnia), Tammy Lynn Michaels (Lacey), Alexandra Hedison (Dylan Moreland) are all lesbians, and Sandra Bernhard (Charlotte Birch) is bisexual.
And in addition to the actors, many members of the creative team behind TLW, are gay too. Ilene Chaiken (Creator, Executive Producer, Writer, Director), Rose Troche (Co-Executive Producer, Director, Writer), Guin Turner (Writer, Story Editor) and Elizabeth Ziff (Producer, Writer, Original Score Composer) are lesbians, and several other writers and directors who have worked on TLW, such as Angela Robinson and Lisa Cholodenko, are lesbians too.
You’re sorry you asked now, aren’t you? ;)
11. Is Karina Lombard really not returning to the show?
Karina Lombard didn’t return to the show in season two, and following Marina Ferrer’s off-screen attempted suicide and subsequent departure to Italy at the beginning of the second season, and rumours of off-screen disagreements between the actress and the production, it seemed unlikely that the character would feature in the show again.
However, it has been confirmed by sources close to the show that Karina Lombard will once again appear as Marina in the fourth season. (Source: AfterEllen.com)
Since leaving The L Word, Karina has appeared in a recurring guest role in the second and third seasons of The 4400, playing Alana Mareva.
12. Where have I seen Jennifer Beals before?
Probably dancing like she's never danced before in the lead role in the eighties film "Flashdance". Other than that, please check her filmography on her cast page.
13. How old are the characters?
Good question! It’s something that none of us are entirely sure about. :???:
We found out in S1 in ‘Looking Back’ that Dana was sixteen when she had the relationship with "Ralph" at tennis camp, and Alice said that it was twelve years ago, so that would have made Dana 28 years old in S1. And as approx six months passed during the course of S2, Dana would now be 29, or just shy of her 29th birthday by my reckoning.
But we haven’t been given any significant clues about the ages of the other characters.
PRODUCTION TEAM
14. Who created the show?
The show was created by Ilene Chaiken, Kathy Greenberg and Michele Abbott. Ilene also acts as Executive Producer.
15. How can I contact Ilene Chaiken or the cast?
The best way is probably to write to her or any other cast member at the following address:
L Word Season III Productions Inc.
8275 Manitoba Street
Vancouver, BC V5X 4L8
16. But that's through Showtime. How can I directly contact the cast members?
I know we'd all love to just drop a cast member an email saying "How you going?" but let's think about this realistically. Even if someone knew how to directly contact a star, why would they broadcast the information? Chances are the star would immediately change their email/address/number/whatever it was you got because of the volumes of traffic the contact details would receive.
Furthermore - No one is ever going to give you Marina's phone number. Why? Because she's a fictional character. Move on please.
The best way to contact a star is through the above address or through their personal representation. Sometimes the official websites of actors have their agents or reps written there, but you'll have to check websites for individual stars to find out.
No one, least of all us, is going to give you Kate Moennig's phone number. We don't have it, and even if we did, we wouldn't hand it out.
17. What involvement did Rose Troche have with the show?
Rose Troche was a series producer, series writer and has directed many episodes of The L Word, including the pilot. She has now left the production team and was not involved with the writing or filming of Season 4.
EPISODES
18. How many episodes were there in season one?
Showtime changed the episode numbering halfway through screening the season.
If you believe their original numbering, there are thirteen episodes, with the original pilot counting as one episode.
The numbering was changed to split the pilot into two episodes, so "officially" season 1 contains fourteen episodes. The L Word Online episode guide reflects that change.

20. Where can I download episodes from? How do I download episodes?
That's illegal. We don't talk about that on this message board.
There is no point posting URLs to download sites as they are constantly changing, and please don't post links to such things on the message board. If you do, the links or references to file sharing methods will be edited out by a moderator.
21. I can't download, will anyone make copies for me?
There is a tape/VCD trading thread on the message board to assist you to hook up with someone who can get you the episodes.
Please avoid buying pirated copies of episodes from eBay. The people who sell these are crooks profiting from fans and ripping off the intellectual property of others. You should never buy episodes from anyone who demands money for them, EVER, unless it is to cover the basic costs of materials and postage.
There are too many people out there who love the show who are willing to give them out for free, to waste your money on loser eBay sellers anyway.
MUSIC
22. What was the name of that song in that scene?
The L Word Online is in contact with Natasha Duprey, the music supervisor for the show and you can find all the commercial songs used in each episode here.
To listen to ezgirl’s original score compositions and to read her session notes, visit ezgirlmusic.com.
23. Are the songs Kit sings in the show available to buy?
“Some Kind of Wonderful” which Pam Grier sings with Betty is included on the S2 soundtrack.
24. Speaking of music, wasn't that chick from the cast in some band?
Yes, Leisha Hailey who plays Alice used to be in a band called The Murmurs with Heather Grody. The Murmurs have a song on The L Word S1 soundtrack. The two then went on to form the band Gush, but Leisha has since quit that project and has moved onto other things, including opening her own music venue. In a recent interview Leisha also mentioned that she might look to start a new band soon.
25. What songs are playing on the Season 1 DVD menus?
The main menu song is called "Blinded By Your Looks Love" by Fundamental. It's not available anywhere except the DVD.
Showtime also used a Joystick song called "Goodtimes" on the bonus features menu. It’s on their album “Welcome to the Factory”, which is available to buy through their website, joystick.bz.
FASHION, PROPS, FEATURED BRANDS AND PRODUCT PLACEMENT
26. Where do those t-shirts with the doves on the sleeve come from?

Screencap taken from Crispy Soup Chef
The fact that this is a very frequently asked question is really amusing. Someone managed to find out that Leisha Hailey's girlfriend, Nina Gurdano, makes these shirts. The cast started wearing them in the show and they've taken on a life of their own. As far as we know these t-shirts are only available for retail sale through Fred Segal, an exclusive shop in LA.
You might be able to purchase them online through Ron Herman at Fred Segal.
27. What brand are Bette's sunglasses?
It was tempting to list Bette's sunglasses in the guest cast list. We're thinking of starting a fanclub for Bette's sunglasses.
The glasses were made by Chanel and apparently you can buy the exact same ones if you are willing to hunt them down and fork out US$175.
If you’re interested in finding out more about the fashion, the designers and the clothing brands that are featured on TLW, you could check out starbrand.tv. If they don’t have the information that you’re looking for listed on the website, you can submit a query to them, or you could try asking your question in the Specific items used in the show thread.
28. Who took the photograph that hangs above Alice’s bed in Season two?
You mean this one…?

Sara Gilbert. Yep, the very same Sara Gilbert who played Darlene Connor on Roseanne, and who has recently guest starred on 24 and ER.
She’s published a book of her photographs, called Cues, which can be purchased from the
International Center of Photography Museum Store, or from photo-eye.com.

29. How do I access the Showtime official website for The L Word if I don't live in the USA?
Showtime has blocked non-US residents from accessing their official TLW website, either directly, or by using the ‘origin’ prefix in front of the URL ie http://origin.www.sho.com/site/lword/home.do. :(
However, non-US residents can still gain limited access to the website by using one of several free cloaking or anonymous internet surfing websites.
The Cloak
Guardster
SurfShield
Proxify
TheProxy
TheProxy, although not particularly stable or reliable, and very pop-up advert heavy, does have the advantage over the other cloaking methods of enabling non-US residents to access and post on the Showtime message board. (Thanks to RedXIII for the heads-up.)
If you use The Cloak, you’ll need to sign up for their pay service if you want to access Sho.com’s official L Word forum. This should let you have posting access. They offer a money-back guarantee if it doesn't work with your favourite forum or message board. Guardster’s free service, however, allows to you to use the message board, but it can be less stable and reliable than the Cloak.
The Cloak: In the list under ‘Features’ on the home page where it says ‘Free anonymous browsing’ click on the ‘Start surfing’ link and enter the URL for Showtime’s site (http://www.sho.com/site/lword/home.do) in the box provided and then click the ‘Start surfing’ button and hey presto!
You can find more discussion of this subject in the The L Word Official Showtime Website thread.

MISCELLANEOUS
31. Where can I find the alternative opening title sequence for Season one?
Imaginary Forces produced an opening credits sequence for the first season of TLW, but it was later rejected in favour of the 'words beginning with L graphic' and the Giorgio Moroder-lite style electronic beeps used in S1. You can view the alternative credits on Imaginary Forces' website or download it here (Thanks to Oz and The L Word Online for the file).
32. What software is Alice using to build her ‘Lesbian Six Degrees of Separation’ chart?
We don’t know for certain, but Thinkmap is similar, and it can be heavily customised. It’s rather expensive though, so it might be out of the price range of any budding chart builders.
33. Has Leisha appeared in any commercials?
YES! She's done Yoplait commercials and ads for BMW.
34. Are any of the actresses gay?
Ya know, we answered this the first time. Stop asking already.
35. Because the shows are both on Showtime, is The L Word anything like Queer As Folk? They're both shows about gay people aren't they?
The L Word has nothing to do with Queer As Folk. The shows have no similar writers, no similar directors and no similar storylines. About the only things the two shows have in common is that they are on Showtime and yes, they both contain openly gay characters.
36. Do only lesbians watch The L Word?
No. People of all genders and all sexualities watch the show and participate in the fandom through message boards, mailing lists etc.
37. Am I gay if I watch The L Word?
That's between you and whoever you sleep with. How would we know?
38. Is Lara coming back?
Yes.
39. What film was that cast member in?
Look it up on the IMDb. Seriously. It's a great resource, and available for everyone.
ABOUT THE MESSAGE BOARD
1. Where can I find spoilers for the next season?
The availability of spoilers for season three is pretty limited because Ilene Chaiken has attempted to restrict access to them, but what little info that is available can be found on The L Word Online and in the Spoiler Thread on this message board.
2. If I read the message board, will I be spoiled for upcoming episodes?
It is almost impossible to keep spoilers off the message board, despite the best efforts of the moderators to keep all spoilers in one thread. It will be especially difficult for viewers from other countries to avoid spoilers on the board after an episode has already screened in the USA.
If you absolutely cannot bear to know anything about what is coming up, best to avoid the internet altogether. Seriously.
3. Can I start a new thread?
Of course you can. However, p
