What Japanese comic would you recommend to a first time reader?
Quaisior
I started reading manga last year. My favorites are Fullmetal Alchemist and Fruits Basket. I like Inuyasha and Sailor Moon too. I'm looking forward to starting Bleach and Love Hina.

If by "regular comics" you mean American comics, then I would have to say that the major difference between the American comic and the Japanese comic would be the manga art forms use of the heavy symbolism.

Symbols are exaggerate in manga; sweat drops are the size of people's heads, when people get hit on the head a huge round bump appears bulging from their skull, big throbbing veins appear on character's heads when they are angry and nosebleeds mean that the character is (usually) sexually aroused. It's quite amusing and if used in the right way, adds to the character's personality greatly.

Plus manga is read from right to left, which is a big difference.

Personally I like the Saiyuki managa arcs by Kazuya Minekura the best...

Have you read the book Making Comics: Storytelling Secrets of Comics, Manga and Graphic Novels
by Scott McCloud
taavi
No, I haven't heard of that book at all. What's it about, and is it any good?
Girlfriend_in_a_coma
I haven't read it, but it's by Scott McCloud, and I've read his book called Understanding Comics, and it's very good. It's about the theory of comics.
taavi
Hmmm... I'll have to check it out the next time I go to a bookstore.

I have read: Peach Girl/Peach Girl: Change of Heart/Peach Girl: Sae's Story, Marmalade Boy, Sailor Moon, Tokyo Mew Mew, Koducha, Shoilin Sisters, Inuyasha, Ramna 1/2.

I read alot of manga I'm a big fan of it. I would recommend Maramalade boy it's a cute romantic comedy with a cute guy named Yuu. It is one of my favorites and I think you would like it.
