The Behr's Discussion Thread! We Like The Way He Works!

IPB Image

This is the thread for SERIOUS discussion of Jason's work.

Several of us have wanted a place to seriously discuss Jason's work and what he brings to the characters he portrays.
We feel like this thread is the place to do that.
We want to see this thread go beyond comments about his looks. Jason has TALENT and that is what we want this thread to focus on.
The characters can be from any TV show, movie, or commerical!
So if you feel the same way we do then jump right in and join the discussion!

Great thread Lori, hope its ok if I kick off the discussion. For those that have seen Shooting Livien, I was wondering if Jason completely removes any idea that you are watching him on screen. I have only heard good things about this movie and how he comes across on screen.
Lori R
Hey, Tan! smile.gif
Okay, I've seen 'Shooting Livien' twice and both times I was so into the character I didn't think about it being Jason...well the black socks. But seriously, he was so into his character that I got swept up in the pain, the addiction, the music (though I knew he wasn't singing), the insane way he took on the Lennon persona, it was if I was watching someone else, not Jason.
I can't imagine where he found it inside himself to 'be' that character, what he pulled on to 'live' Livien's life.

Lori
Tan
Thanks Lori. I'm looking forward to seeing him in Shooting Livien.
Angeleyes00_04
I think its a very rare thing these days to come across someone who can completely blow you away with there acting performance.
Jason does it and does it better than i have seen in a very long time.
The way he expresses so much without using and dialogue im amazing.
I have recently seen rites of passage and though he was just brilliant in it, he brought the character to life in such a way that you couldnt help but fall in love with him and it didnt matter whathe did the fact that he was so hurt just broke my heart.
Pomonagurl12
I know he's serious about his work...and he looks really good doing it!! grin.gif wink.gif lol.gif

I have seen Rites of passage also many times. Each time I watch it, Jason blows me away. He is so talented! Some scenes with Dean Stockwell, like when they fight at dinner or the other scene when he is crying and saying his lover never came home are just too much to put them into words. He sure has great looks but his acting is what amazed me and made me interested in him to begin with.

I had seen him previously in Buffy and Dawson and thought he was just another smart ass hollywood actor wannabe, someone couldn't really act (ok, I was focusing on his roles, not on his talent or physic) but once I saw him in the roswell pilot, I was just staring at my tv and wondering how he could play with such intensity. That's when I got addicted.

Great idea for a thread Lori! smile.gif

Ok, well he completely blew me away in Roswell from day one! I wasn't thinking to myself "What a great actor" I was thinking "This poor half human half alien" I forgot I was watching a TV show, I had become emersed into this world and his performance was one of the main reasons.

Only a select few actors can take their characters and make them part of themselves, they become the that character. Jason is one of these amazing actors.

His charactor in "Rites of Passage" was so believable, although his character did the wrong thing you could see and feel the innocence. He made you want to forgive him, he made you cry.

In The Grudge, his presence was very strong, although his roll wasn't big, he still made you feel.

Making you feel and believe is something that Jason does well in all the characters he plays.

I cannot wait to see him in "Shooting Livien" and "Happily, Evan After" I can just image the amazing performance I am going to see of him in both films!
Angeleyes00_04
One of my big things is guys who cry, seeing a guy cry just melts me, that and seeing a guy holding a baby, put them both together and im a blithering mess!!
When he cries every single tear says something, you feel his pain as the tears roll down his face.
Some actors have to wrok really hard to cry and it always seems forced somehow but he seems to be able to do it so naturally and when welling up is enough or when his tears need to roll down his face.
It just amazed me every single time.
coloradospace
What Angeleyes00_04 said is true. When Max is crying because Tess is pregnant, or when Campbell is crying over his lost lover, it breaks my heart. Jason gave so much life to each character he portrayed... You can just look at Roswell and see the different roles he played there. Each time, I saw the character whereas it was Max, Nasedo, the military guy in Summer '47, Zan (although it was short), Clayton...and even futur Max is different! Yep, this guy definitely has more talents that some actors that are more "famous" or holywood recognized than him. I much rather his roles (main target, quality) instead of a star wanabee that just acts in blockbusters and thinks his good looks are what would make him famous.

I totally agree with everything you said here.
I don't know any other actor that makes forget he's acting, and there are some strong actors out there. I get so engrossed in the character Jason has created.

Yes, he has a gift that is for sure.
And I agree about how he brought Cam to life so much that my heart broke for him too. The anger, pain, longing for his father's approveal, the loss of his love, the fear/wrong decision he goes through to protect his family, everything was just amazing.

Writers can write a strong character.
Directors can direct how they see the character being or want them in a scene.
But actors are the ones that make us believe the character and therefore take us into the story. If that isn't accomplished then we're just sitting there watching another movie/show and we're aware the whole time that the actor is acting. Jason is the character. He' crawled into his skin and has become that person, and we believe it.
That is a gift.

coloradospace I agree about some actors and their looks/blockbusters. Those are the ones that I'm either not believing their character or I'm thinking about 'them' while they are on screen. I wasn't convinced by their work.
Jason is fortunate to have both good looks and talent. I would love to see him in roles that are made accessible on screen for everyone to see though. 'Shooting Livien' and 'Rites of Passage' really show his strength as an actor IMO, though all are good to show his range as an actor.

The writing in season 3 of Roswell was not the greatest. And, many of the story lines were never resolved or resolved way to quickly to be satisfying. The thing that keeps me watching some of these episodes, though, is Jason's acting.

There are times where he is totally able to convey what Max was feeling and thinking with just a look - which really saved some episodes, since the writing that should have been there really wasn't.

A few examples of what I mean:

In Busted when Agent Burns is speaking to Max outside the hotel, Burns says to Max "...if you don't stop, you and your girfriend will not be happy juvenile delinquents." When Burns mentions "and your girlfriend" I swear there was like fire in Max's eyes! Jason was so clearly able to show how angry and protective Max was when Burns indirectly threatened Liz!

In Control, in the final scene b/w Max and Liz at the crashdown, when Max tells Liz "I was wrong" and goes to hold her, she backs away and says "No Max." When she says this, max looks like she practically slapped him. He really looks so dejected, his face says it all. It seems like he's thinking "that's it, I've really lost her" I wasn't happy with the actual writing in this scene, but as I said before, Jason's acting was able to convey all the things Max's words didn't.

These are just a few examples, but, for me, there were many times in season 3 that the writing and storylines in Roswell really turned me off to the show. The only thing that I think saved this season was the talent of the actors on the show - Jason in particular.
spicygriff
I think his acting is great. No matter how many times I see him Roswell I cannot get over how much I believe he is that character! I have to shake my head when it is over and remind myself that Max Evans is not real. Jason really does know how to make himself into his characters. It just seems so natural. I remember watching the screen test for Tess on the season one DVD. It is the scene with Max and Tess in the Bio lab.... Jason effortlessly goes into character and it is amazing!!

I know what you mean. We can also clearly see his talent compared to Emilie de Ravin in this screen test...or may be it is because I don't like the girl and thinks she is a bad actress... shrug.gif tongue.gif

Living in France, I haven't seen "Happily even after" or "Shooting Livien" ...adn got too scared to go see "The Grudge" blush.gif . I hope HEA and SL will soon come out either in theatre or in DVDs so I can FINALLY see him. The characters he portrays in those movies seem complex and so not...what he did before I guess, from lack of better words, from what I read and saw so far. grin.gif
Angeleyes00_04
Scary movies terrify me but i managed to sit through The Grudge because of jason, but i did have my trusty pillow with me to help me get through the movie.
It is worth seeing even if just for Jasons scenes.
limiCOOL
i completely identify with everything you all said in here...that you forget that you're even watching an actor and that this person max doesn't exist
and before "The Grudge" i only saw him in Roswell and like coloradospace said that he plays the diffrent cherecters so good but still for me he was just max because that was the only character that i saw him plays and when i heared of this new film he was in and i forced myself to watch it because i don't really like horror movies and when i finally saw him in that movie i had to see him in other movies or tv showes he was in so i saw him in buffy and i saw one episode of dawson's and his cherecter was so different than max and i realized that he really is a great actor cool.gif
oh and i also saw the trailer for SL and i really hope to see this movie (crossing my fingers rolleyes.gif )
spicygriff
Hey AngelEyes JB was the reason I watched the grudge yesterday. I hate scary movies but this one I had to see! I have a laptop at work and so I rented it and watched it at work in the daytime. TeeHee. It was well worth it! I had my eyes closed for a better part of the movie though (except for Jasons parts) glow.gif smile.gif

Thanks for the new thread Lori. As many of you, I was blown away by Jason's performance in The White Room episode, I was like ok, that guy is hot and an awesome actor. My best friends Tess and Monique told me about the show and I was like, why didn't you tell me sooner lol.gif But I swear more and more each time I am blown away by Jason's amazing talent. And like many of you who don't like scary movies, I too went to see it to support Jason wink.gif and of course had fellow Behrians by my side wink.gif

And with that said, I bring some goodies grin.gif

wave.gif hi behrians, it's so good to be back!!
(sorry if this is kinda spoilerish) wink.gif i too believe jason is a wondeful actor. i haven't seen shooting livien, but
i can't wait. i have the new trailer(the one where it begins with the band standing on stage) and there is this part where u can here in the
background females calling out the name of a song, and he goes, "you don' get to pick the songs silly silly girls" in a heavy liverpool accent. every time i hear that i have to keep rewinding and just say wow.
just had to point that out.
oh and, DREAMER4EVER: thanx for the clips grin.gif

I am with you all on many of the points that you brought up:

Jason wearing the character

Forgetting that the character isn't real.

Diversity in what characters he plays, i.e. Chris Wolfe to Max Evans (polar opposites)

The episodes that always get me is:

Leaving Normal when Jason tries to help Liz say goodbye to her grandma... when he can't make Grandma wake up his face and body language tell you how sorry he is and how much he wishes he could help.

White Room always makes me ache at what the Special Unit is doing to Max... the only way to make an audience feel that way is to make it real. Jason makes me wish that I could be in his place... that doesn't happen very often for me... I am an avid movie watcher and don't get sucked in that often but every time I see Jason in a character, I feel what he feels, I react the same way.

I think his talent is going to rock the world like it has his fans and I am sure his families.

Just my two cents blush.gif [/i]

Exactly, i think thw white room was the ep where i really went yeah he's so got the it factor, i want to see more from him very very soon.
Im so glad to went the indy film path those movies seem to have much more depth to them than quite a lot of the 'blockbusters' out there today.
The lollypop sugar coated movies are fine for when you want to have a giggly girly night with your friends but i really want to get into the psyche and of the character and with Jason he makes it so easy for you to do that.
Lori R
The only problem with Indies is that we do not always get to see them sad.gif

Yeah... and they don't always go to DVD/Theater release.

Out of all the actors that I have enjoyed in my 28 years he is the one I most enjoy watching on screen. His ability to embrace his characters and become them, get lost in them and still come out whole and sane is an ability I wish most actors in this country would have.

YES! Very well put! nod.gif
I so enjoy his acting that I forget it's him.
When the lights come up and reality intrudes I do enjoy reliving the experience in my head or discussing it with others and really think about all he put into that particular character.
I've read that actors draw on life experiences for characters.
Sometimes I wonder just what he drew on for some of them. Ex: Livien

Lori

Jason is really sexy, but what you all said is true. He most of all is a very talented actor. He also knows how to chose his roles. Some deep characters, intimate stories (most of the time) than blockbusters. Just look at "Rites of passage" and then "The shipping news"! He had a very small role in the last one but just look at the cast and director! Kevin Spacey, Judy Dench, Julianne Moore, Las Alstrom (sorry for the bad orthogragh, but you get my drift wink.gif ). I really enjoyed that movie because it had a true story behind and he didn't jump to teen blockbusters movies like David Moreanaz and his Valentine killer movie skep.gif . I just wish we could see more of him. I am dying to see "Shooting Livien" and "Happily even after", preferably in the theatre but if not, in DVD grin.gif Let's hope there are some "intelligent" people on Earth who can recognize his talent and th epotential of those movies smile.gif
MNIrish77
I have often wondered that myself... when I had to try to work up into a good cry for a scene there are particular memeories that I think of that make me sad and if I think of other suff along with it... man can I get going.

What was he thinking to be Max in "White Room" or when Tess got pregnant? Or Cambell... how did he find the courage to kiss another guy (when we assume he is straight - which most men won't do) Granted they weren't passionate kisses but still...

I know that some actors don't like to talk about what gets them fired up or crying... but I wonder... what could make him hurt so bad that a guy would cry (we know how they really don't like to smile.gif )

Ive been told that the place some actors need to go to do that is a very scary place and not somewhere they would ever go if they didnt have to, i can only imagine where they go and to be able to go there ans still be able to put on a great performance, to me thats what a TRUE actor is and jason has proven that to us on many an occasion.
