Victoria Holt was one of my alltime favorite authors. I used to love to just sit back and escape completely with her. My favorite books by her, well, hmm. there really is too many. But I loved Mistress of Mellyn, Kirkand Revels( Simon Redvers is my favorite male character she's ever written.) and The Road to Paradise Island. I've also read from a few of her other alias's most notoably Phillipa Carr. But to me, Victoria was THE queen of the gothics.
As for other authors, probably Phyllis A. Whitney, though she was more contemporary.

Ooh, I absolutely loved Victoria Holt - I think I read every one of them at some point, probably one after the other. My mom had them and I picked one up and started it and just loved it. It led to my obsession with Gothic novels. I finally grew out of it but I always remember her stories. I didn't get into Phillippa Carr as much, but I do remember reading them. In fact, I think I moved on to horror from those books.

I was pretty much the same hip, I read one right after the other and more than once through the years...but I moved onto other genres as well but gothic still remains one of my favortites.

ooh I just adore Victoria Holt both as Holt and Carr!!! I've read all of her books. I remember I just picked up one of my Mom's books and then I had to read all of them. Now every time I go into a used book store I check to see if they have any of her books. I have a huge collection of her books. I'm trying to get all of them in hardcovers
You know who else is really good!! Is Barbara Michaels who also writes as Elizabeth Peters. I have never gotten into her as Elizabeth Peters but her Barbara Michaels books are GREAT! Some of the titles include:
"Search the Shadows" "Sons of the Wolf" and "Be Buried in the Rain" If you guys are looking for a new author I suggest looking for some of her books

Kim, I was exactly the same! I would always dig around, mostly at book sales, used book stores trying to find them. I eventually have most on hardback. most old library ones, but there might be one or 2 I don't have. I used to look at my list constantly but it's been awhile.
Thanks for the tip on Barbara Michaels, I'll have to try her out

I worked in a book store so I printed out all of her novels and I use to keep that list in my purse.

It is cool to know that someone else loved her so much that they kept a list of her books
Julie and Deb I hope you like Barbara Michaels! Some of her books might be a tad hard to find but they are definitely worth ordering.

LOL!! Oh yes, I had a list, more than one actually because at first I didn't know about her aliases.
As for Victoria herself, I had always wanted to contact her in some way, let her know that her stories left such an impact on me. I had heard she died on a cruise in '94 (I knew she was getting up there!) and really regreted that I didn't.

I didn't really get into Victoria Holt until I came across one of my Mom's book in high school and by that time she was already dead. It is such a shame

She was such a wonderful author. She was so good at her craft that I hope she isn't forgotten.
Has anyone come across any other good authors? Since we have been talking about this I want to read some gothic romances.

I haven't been on this thread in ages...too consumed with my tv addictions among other things lol
I really like Phylis A. Whitney Kim is you're still in the market for another gothic author. She's very "Victoria like" but in a more contempory manner.
