For the past six months I have had issues with Elliott having urinary tract infections. I have done everything that the vet has told me to do. Elliott only has distilled water, prescribed food, metal bowls, two litter boxes, etc.) However, he is still having them. Right now he has been on antibiotics for over a month. Does anyone have any recommendations?
Sandi
My family dog had that for awhile. The only thing we did was the antibiotics and it seemed to work. Hows he reacting to them? What kind of antibiotics did your vet prescribe?
Rogue
At the moment he is on 250mg of Cephalexum once a day. What kind worked for your dog?
Vinity
Poor kitty. Antibio's worked on our kitty too, plus we have them all on special diets. If the problem persist, the vet may have to check for other causes, similar to people, cyst, tumors or diabeties.

Good luck and sending you healing vibes!

Thanks Vinity!

I just called the vet this morning because Elliott's stomach is so upset from the medicine that he can't keep anything down. He is vomitting and has diarrahea. I'm waiting for them to call me back now.

Rouge ~ Our kitty Ozzy has been having UTIs off and on for the past year and just can't seem to get rid of them either. He has been on all kinds of different antibiotics. He will get completely better and then it will just come back again. It is so frustrating. Our vet says that it can be caused by stress. Ozzy had his latest episodes with it when we moved from our apartment to a house. Has Elliott been through any major changes lately? They also told us it can be a seasonal thing too. Oh is the medicine he is on liquid or pills? Ozzy has been on both, it seems that a combination of the two works best.

I hope that Elliott feels better, I know it is so hard when they are sick and you can't help them sad.gif
Rogue
Thanks Janelle! Elliott hasn't been through anything tramatic or stressful as far as I know. At the very beginning of these episodes, his medicine was liquid. Since the first two weeks, it has been pills.

I'm extremely frustrated at the moment because I took the urine sample to the vet the other night and still have not heard back. I have called three times and each time they say that the vet is discussing it with another veterinarian to try to figure out what is going on. It is getting me a little frustrated because the longer he is off medicine, the worse he is going to get.

Thanks Vin!

I actually just got back from the vets. I left work early and drove to their office to see what was going on uhoh.gif

They have placed him back on Baytril for the next three weeks. If that doesn't take care of it they are going to do a cat scan (no pun intended although that sounds kinda funny) and see if something else is causing the infections.

Our vet has said if Ozzy doesn't get over his latest UTI they are going to have to x-rays on him too. I hope everything works out okay for Elliott hug.gif
Rogue
Thanks Janelle!

I hope that Ozzy gets better soon! Maybe our cats are twins lol

Well Ozzy is back at the vet today and the word from my husband is that they said he still has his infection. I just feel like screaming or something. Why is it so hard to get him something that works? The poor little guy, he was yelling his head off when we put him in the cage this morning because he didn't want to go and get poked and prodded again. Not to mention the small fortune we have invested in all of the different antibiotics and such. bawl.gif Now I just have to wait to see what they say when Bryan goes to pick him up tonight about what we can do to get rid of this......
Rogue
I'm sorry Janelle sad.gif *hug*

Have they ever tried Baytril on him? Elliott has only been on this dose a couple days and I can already tell that he is feeling better and his urine isn't as strong.
Vinity
poor kitty sad.gif {{{{{{healingvibes}}}}}} is he staying hydrated? Subcue IVs are pretty easy to do at home.

BTW cmupjer I see Serenity in your sig line. Wasn't that wonderful? I missed it on theaters cause it was here only 10 days sad.gif Yay DVD and big screen TVs
Rogue
Keep your fingers crossed, I have to take Elliott's urine sample to the vet tomorrow and hopefully he will not need more meds.

I so have my fingers crossed right now for you and Elliott.

Our saga seems to be okay for now. When Bryan was at the vet with Ozzy the last time they did an xray and they didn't find anything. They really think it is stress and that we just need to play with him more. We have been playing with him non-stop and he has tore apart one of his toys that he got for Christmas already and there haven't been anymore incidents so I am hoping he is okay for now. I think if it happens again though we might need to try a different vet or something.
Rogue
I'm glad that Ozzy is doing better Janelle smile.gif

I heard from the vet a little while ago and Elliott still has a high amout of white bloodcells in his urine. However, they are not going to give him more antibiotics. He is scheduled to be neutered at the end of the month, so they are hoping after that the count will go down. I guess only time will tell.
Rogue
Elliott has been neutered and that seems to really have helped! His urine is no where as strong and he doesn't cry out when he has to go to the bathroom.

Also, he is acting like frisky little kitten!!!!
TCN
Sounds like he's doing alot better, Rogue. Also, in some cat foods, there is something called ash. I don't know exactly what it is but I do know that it's in cat food and not dog, so it must be something that cat's need. One day when I was working at Petco, a woman came up to me and told me that her cat had a UTI and the vet told her to get a cat food with very little ash in it. If it does happen again, look on the back of the label of the cat food and just look for a low % number for the ash in it.

Hope that helps a little.
