I've just seen the trailer to the movie "Ultraviolet (2006)". Check it out. The first thing to come to my mind was how similar it seemed to Dark Angel. skep.gif
What do y'all think?

[Edited - Title was changed to allow different projects' discussions]

Maybe a little bit but not that much rolleyes.gif What's with the backgrounds? Sickening with all those reflective panels and everything..Doesn't even look like a real city skep.gif

From the movie's plot summary:

Set in the late 21st century, a subculture of humans have emerged who have been modified genetically by a vampire-like disease (Hemophagia), giving them enhanced speed, incredible stamina and acute intelligence, and as they are set apart from "normal" and "healthy" humans, the world is pushed to the brink of worldwide civil war (a war between humans and hemophages) aimed at the destruction of the "diseased" population.

So, yes, I'd say there are similarites to Dark Angel.

When I watched it,it didn't remind me of Dark Angel at all (except that Milla and Alba both have black hair smile.gif)

Oh I just saw an ad for that ultraviolet this morning. It's totally like da except ultraviolet is more scifi.
If anyone watched "Mutant X", the part where the intro and names of main actresses and actors (have no idea what it's called right now) It like slides from top to bottom all through it of faint barcodes. It's really freaky. Always reminds me of DA.
Chloe2554
It's different, but I think the basic plot is very similar.
dandyman
Haven't seen it, but according to above description the only similar part is the fact that its sort of a discrimatory "war" based on fear of differences.

It doesn't seem more sci-fi than DA on the contrary... genetic mutations is more than a "disease" imo.

Ultraviolet's a lame ripoff of Dark Angel.

I think it is probably a bit too much to hope for, that there is another show in which the spirit of Dark Angel lives on (other than any new spin off type shows). Because Dark Angel was obviously such a top quality and unique show.

But I was wondering if there were any other shows that you Dark Angel fans might regard as being either similar or a similar type of top quality show?

I have just finished watching Roswell and although I thought it was a really excellent show and a lot better than I was expecting it to be, it was nothing like the same style or tone of show that Dark Angel was.

There were some obvious similarities and parallels between them, - they both involved genetically engineered outsiders that were trying to keep their real identities secret whilst very often being chased by nasty government agencies, and also trying to deal with their personal relationships with ordinary humans that knew there secret, true identities, aiming for a normal life and rescueing their fellow outsiders.

But that’s where the similarities end, well at least as far as I’ve noticed anyway. Roswell wasn’t set in the post apocalyptic future and despite all the top quality humour in Dark Angel, it still felt to me like it had a much more serious overall tone, even in the second season. That’s just my personal view of it.

Personally, I don’t generally find science fiction shows interesting if they are set in space or on other planets and I’m not interested in vampires or shows like Buffy and Charmed, to me I just find them completely silly and so unbelievable even while you’re watching them.

Are there any other shows or films that you Dark Angel fans think is anywhere near the quality, style or type of show that Dark Angel was? Does the sprirt of Dark Angel live on in anything else?

Actually satansnewlapdog Roswell is about a group of aliens.

Interesting... I can't warp my mind around a comparison between the two, but if you do want more similarities I think you can find it in a possible subtext theme: How society treats those who are different and how they, the 'Outsiders', choose to deal with it. Do they hide their true self? Are they ashame of who they are? Do they choose to fight?

Actually satansnewlapdog Roswell is about a group of aliens.
True. But in a sense they were genetically engineered. To quote from Roswell: "You perished in the conflict that enslaves our planet but your essence was duplicated, cloned, and mixed with human genetic materials so that you might be recreated into human beings" - Destiny (Roswell's season one finale).

Hi all this is my very first post smile.gif

Just checked out the trailer for Ultraviolet. I think the film has allot of similarities as DA.

looks to me having just seen the trailer a bit like DA and Equilibrium rolled in to one.

Immortal godess, I know Roswell was about a group of aliens, I never said they were not aliens. But through the series, it also transpired that they were actually half Antar (alien) and half human, as Lyric has indicated, and in one of the episodes, Michael and Maria actually see a picture of Michael’s human grandfather, who looked exactly the same as Michael. And I’m fairly sure that somewhere in the series they refer to the 4 as having been engineered from human genetics, and they referred to themselves as being hybrids, (hybrids of Antar and humans).

In fact, in the ‘Skin and Bones’ episode of Roswell, Max says that he is a hybrid with a mixture of alien and human DNA.

And of course Max in Dark Angel was a genetically engineered hybrid, she was supposed to have the genes of 25 people plus some feline DNA.

So they were both hybrids with a mixture of different DNA in their genes, and both partly human. Max Gueverra was mostly human with cat genes, and Max Evans was half human and half Antar. But they were both genetically engineered hybrids.

But to get back a bit more on topic, I never suggested that they they were the same characters from 2 different shows, on the contary, I thought I said they were very different shows and characters, I just pointed out some ways in which there were some similarities. Of course another similarity I didn’t mention was that both the alien hybrids and the X5s had abilities and attributes that were in excess of normal human abilities (although they were obviously different abilities from each other).

Anyway, what Lyric suggested, is absolutely right in my opinion, about how society treats those who are different and how the outsiders choose to deal with it, being a similarity between the 2 shows.

In fact I think that is actually a lot more relevant to this thread than the specific details of the different characters. That theme was an absolutely essential one to both shows. So I suppose that is the nearest so far that anyone has come up with, to the spirit of Dark Angel living on in anything else, (although Roswell obviously finished as well).

It would probably be going off topic for posters to reply with loads of things that are completely different about Roswell than Dark Angel, the differences are all fairly obvious.

What would be more relevant for this thread, would be if anyone can suggest anything else that is more similar to Dark Angel. confused.gif

I haven’t seen Ultraviolet, but I read a lot of reviews of it and almost everyone said how bad it was, which put me off the idea of watching it, in fact I don’t even know if it has actually been out in the UK yet.

OK, I think if the spirit of Dark Angel isn’t living on in anything else, or nobody can think of anything else that is similar, I wonder what other type of tv shows do most Dark Angel fans watch.

So what are your other favourite tv shows? confused.gif

Firefly, another one Fox canned look.gif . And Buffy, cause Joss Whedon made that one too- but not so much Angel.
And The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.
I seriously don't think there is a genre show out there as good as DA or Firefly.
In any case, I'm asking for season one of Supernatural for my birthday- I haven't seen it, but will get it cold for Jensen, he's cool.

I just rented Ultra Violet. that movie was the suck. and in no way reminded me of DA. which is good b/c it would have made me more upset at how bad the movie was if it had been a bad rip off. I do see how someone could think there would be some similarities.....both are genetically altered humans that were created to become the weapon of the future and they both ride bikes. However, it ends there. Mainly, because DA was awesome, and UV was horrible. HORRIBLE! smile.gif AH just horrible!
jondy09
Painkiller Jane... I taped an episode... I've only watched a little bit, but it seems cool... the basic premise is kind of similar; they both have extrodinary abilities, they are both helping 'the good guys' fight corruption/ crime/ solve mysteries; they are both being hunted by the military.... however, I don't know how similar it really is

I was just going to mention that the moment I saw the trailer for Hitman I immediately thought of Dark Angel. I later learned that Hitman is based off the video game.

Is it me, or does this new show, Sara Connor Chronicles have similiarities to Dark Angel without the "hip hop" theme...
Petite doe eyed female cyborg whipping up on Bigger macho men,
Barcodes
The narrating by sarah connor, (in the beginning, in the middle and at the end.)
Hot chicks riding Motorcycles,
the back ground score?????

Well, I'm just watching the Series Premiere, trying to see if I like it or not. Fox has a history of taking old shows and recycling them into new shows. ie: 21 Jumpstreet/ NY undercover... nothing wrong with it though....just an obseervation...

Wired News mentions a possible similiarities between Dark Angel and Joss Whedon's new series, Dollhouse. Click here to read and wach the clip. What do you think?

trailer gone

http://io9.com/391020/watch-eliza-dushku-a...-a-new-identity

in this one there are a few scenes where I felt watching DA, like Dushku walking with back tom camera, the water scene at the beginning

however, she seems to have no problem with guns...

if it is aired in Germany I will watch, already because Eliza is among my favourite actresses, and see if it's similar to DA smile.gif

Some months ago I had gotten a barcode tattoo on the back of my neck. (Of course) But it had actually take me a while to be updated on the Hitman situation and a co-worker asked me if I had gotten it for Hitman. I had no idea what the hell he was talking about and I thought he was nuts. When I found out about the movie I wanted to smack the boy a couple dozen times.

I posted this on the News Thread, but it fits here as well. So, no real news, but I thought it was worth bringing over:

According to IMDb.com, they shoot in California.

I haven't yet established the thought, but was wondering...

I'm a La Femme Nikita fan, and the CW has recently ordered a pilot for a remake. While I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it, a never-before-thought occur to me: Is it possible to find similarities between LFN and DA?

The operatives were brought into Section One. The transgenics were 'brought', in a sense, into Manticore. Both were trained to be killers, working for a government. Both organizations were ruthless. No way out (and if one do go out, they are being hunt down).

Of course, there are also differences, but...

Like I said, I haven't yet established the thought blush.gif What do you think?

We've mentioned Hitman before, and while I don't know if the following is correct... "Top 10 Most Disappointing Movies Based on Video Games!"

QUOTE
1. Hitman

I left the theater after seeing this in utter shock. I can't stand this movie. Horrible. No one will ever be able to convince me otherwise. I love Hitman. This movie took a great game and made it a paint-by-numbers action that doesn't even get that right. What should have been a layered, thrilling movie was turned into tripe.

The sequence at the start in which children are receiving tattoos and training is actual footage taken from James Cameron's series Dark Angel What the? I wanted to walk out at several points from the inane plot and just total lack of respect this movie showed it's source. You can easily get me riled up by trying to defend this movie but you will never...EVER...and I mean EVER...be able to change my mind on this. Horrible.
