Hello Dark Angel fans,
My name is Dustin Colbert. I am currently working on a screenplay using the Dark Angel license. Once I finish the script I plan on getting a literary agent, as well as an editor. I am definately taking this seriously. Anyway, I just finished the first act of the manuscript(out of a planned 3) and I came to a key point in the story. I am not sure where I should take the story from it's current point. So I was thinking...who better to ask than the fans? So I am asking now, what would you like to see happen in a Dark Angel movie? All ideas are welcomed, however, not all will make it into the script. Keep in mind that I have currently disregarded the books. This is due to a majority of the public, along with the casual fan of the show not even knowing of their existence. My script starts out where Season 2 left off. Max, Alec, Logan, Joshua, Sketchy, Original Cindy, Mole, and a bunch of other transgenics have been trapped inside Terminal City. The police are standing guard at the gates, and there is an angry mob of humans outside. I cannot reveal anything else for several reasons. So just list all your ideas, and I will get back to you.

Well, you might be able to somehow have the virus thing with Max and Logan get cleared up. And although we would all like to see everyone have happy endings and be accepting of the transgenics, maybe you could at least have some acceptance into the world, but not total and leave it hanging a bit. You could have Max find the rest of those who escaped...maybe with Lydeckers help. Anyway, just a few suggestions. Good luck!

Within the first half hour I want that stupid season long virus GONE!
More of the X6's shown. Many of us are the ages of the X6's, so it's more of a personal connecting thing.
Also I want a face for Jondy. Since the first episode we've heard of Jondy and her being like Maz with the no sleep thing, but never a face. I would like a face for Jondy.

I like your guy's ideas. My first half hour revolves around re-introducing the Dark Angel storyline through flashbacks, as well as Max & company trying to find a way around the armed forces outside Terminal City without hurting anyone. The virus is, however, one of my priorities to get cleared up.
Keep the ideas coming guys! All your comments will be reasonably considered.

Well, since you ask, I seem to have a little something typed up here.....
After the events in Freak Nation Ames White is taken to a mental hospital, where he breaks out with the help of a Cult assault team, convinces them that they're the top of their genetic food chain and deserve to rule the 'new world'. White and co. then kill off the leaders of the Cult and take charge.
The Transgenics are working on a delivery system for Max's 'genetic salvation', and are nearing completion.
Days go by as Logan finishes deciphering Max's runes- they talk about balance, blagh, blagh, basically Max was designed to counter White. Max ponders while Logan says it's just based on some old prophesy and in an emotional moment, he touches her. Logan falls to the virus and is taken to Dr. Shankir, who gives 'em the 'Nothing we can do, Joshua's blood could only save him once' speech.
Max, knowing Logan is as good as dead, decides to take it to White, and Joshua follows against her orders.
Max and Joshua find Cult HQ and do some recon. The comet passing Earth will be the signal to alert thousands of Breeding Cult operatives in key positions worldwide to take over as the virus begins to kill millions, co-ordinated by White, and plunge the Earth into the dark ages again.
At the hospital Logan's eyes open. Dr. Shankir looks puzzled.
Back at the Cult hideout Lydecker appears in front of Max and Joshua. "I've been aware of their operation for some weeks now. You'll need some help." He says. Our two heroes, already in shock, look over their shoulders to see a dozen armed commandos. " Not much, but well trained and loyal.." Lydecker adds. They all crash in and go berserk on the bad guys! Cult baddies drop left and right as they were caught off-guard. Lydecker and his men trade lives for lives. Max is horrified to see Joshua go down. Now it's just Max, Lydecker and White, all others dead or running.
White grabs a gun from a dead commando and aims at Max- Lydecker, out of ammo, jumps to take the bullet and falls, a hole squarely between his eyes. Max, in a blinding burst of speed grabs and twists the gun out of White's hand, kicking him back a few feet at the same time. She points the gun at him.
Comet approaching Earth, control panel waiting to be activated, White says "..Can't be faster than me, I was bred to-"
Max shoots him in the head. [Flashback: "...I don't do guns."] White's body hits the ground.
No sounds or movement, now. She is the only one standing. [Flashback: her and Logan kissing/ Logan dying from the virus] She sinks to her knees. "Logan...", she mutters. As if by itself the gun begins to move. She slowly points it at her own head, tears begining to flow.
"No,little fella", says a rising but very bloody Joshua. She drops it, sobbing.
Outside cars pull up. Max sees Logan step out of one. Amazed and crying, she runs to him.
"We're too late, the comet's on us!" she says. Logan explains that her genetic code was piggybacked onto a cold virus that was successfully launched into the atmosphere last week, making most immune to the comet's effects, and that Joshua's blood has mutated his genes enough to help his antibodies wipe out the virus. Comet passes Earth.
Joshua is carried out, still alive, and put in a car to go to a hospital.
Logan and Max look at eachother, and embrace as if no one else is even there.
Cut to: Space Needle with no one on it.
Fade out.

Wow chrisisall. You really put some thought into that. I'm not so sure about White being in the mental institution thing. My screenplay starts at the exact point that the series ended. So, in essence, my screenplay is Season 3. It all starts off with a standoff of the transgenics inside Terminal City against the police/citizens and eventually the military. The first 36 pages of my screenplay are all about giving a recap of the Dark Angel series, and Max, Alec, and Joshua helping Logan and Original Cindy get out of Terminal City before the radiation/pollution of Terminal City starts to kill them.
I do like your ending where no one is standing on the Space Needle though. What it says to me is that everything has finally been fixed, so there is no reason for Max to go up there and think about what the next day will bring. I also like you bringing Lydecker back into the picture. I had already planned on bringing him back, but I wasn't sure how. I don't think I would bring him back like you did, but I would definately bring him back.
Good ideas guys. Thanks for the input. Keep 'em coming.

What about Sketchy?

He was there with them in the end of "Freak Nation'.
Dustin, what do you think are the chances for bringing the original cast? I mean, with Jessica Alba doing great on the big screen, and both Michael Weatherly and Jensen Ackles having their own shows... (though Jensen
is reading scripts, according to an interview with him).
If you can't have the original cast, are you still planing to go through with the movie and if so, who do you see in the leading roles?
foleyisgod2006
Feb 21 2006, 03:56 AM
Hey lyric,
I haven't really given any thought to who the cast will be. Right now I'm just focused on getting the screenplay completed. Of course, the ideal situation would be to get all the original cast back together. Jessica Alba alone could sell movie tickets to people that have no idea what Dark Angel is. The smaller roles such as Normal, Original Cindy, and Sketchy should have no probelm bringing the original actors back. I would say that, as of right now, the ability to get this off the ground is dependent on Jessica Alba agreeing to do it. Because let's face it, Dark Angel has since long been forgotten by the general public. Only the fans of the show really remember it.
Also, someone mentioned something along the lines of "what about sketchy?" Well, I can't disclose too much, but I will say that Sketchy will be doing something that effects the story. I guess I could say that I have something special planned for Sketchy.
Keep the questions and ideas coming guys!

I dont have any good ideas at the moment but I thought itd bee cool to maybe see Zack again. I know hes living another life now but is it possible he could show up in a cameo? Or maybe there is a clone of Zack working with Max as one of her generals.

Seeing him and Alec together, when Zack doesn't try to kill him... Oh, and when he's not trying to get it on with Max :shudders: That was just wrong!
He
could get his memory back while watching the news from Terminal City, couldn't he?
Ryu
Feb 21 2006, 03:13 PM
Thats what I was thinking. Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Zack still have his barcode after the doctors erased his memory? I'd figure he'd be enjoying his life as a trucker and then he hears all the news about the transgenics and terminal City. If he still has his bar code I'm pretty sure he'd have no choice but to put two and two together.
Even if he doesnt have his barcode, all those pics of Max and other transgenics he may have known plastered on the news should jog some kind of memory from him.

He did seem to think that he should know Max at the end of 'Some Assembly Required'. But that was in the hospital. There was no immediate context. Seeing her in Terminal City, with the rest of the transgenics, that should bring the memories back.

I can guess the answer, but just to make sure... We're
not going to see Zack, right?
Sandman would be great! What about Asha? I can't rememebr what happened to her, but if the transgenics are trying to get Logan and OC out of Terminal City, they'll probably need help on the outside...
*shiri&jensen4ever*
Feb 23 2006, 11:25 PM

me too - I'd love to see Zack return, he is one of the best (and memorable) things about Season 1. He really bounced off Lydecker very well, not to mention the tension/conflict he had with Max's decision making. Who does that now? Mole is good but seems reckless to me. Zack is better because he thought out every possibility and outcome. Having said that, Zack's infatuation with Max was a wrong direction!
O well, generally all I can say is don't underestimate your audience - fans or otherwise - people like to feel their making their own conclusions and not spoon fed the who, what and whys in a storyline.
Firefly got one season and
nobody in the UK ever heard of it (I don't even think it got shown!) When
Serenity was released, it was just Whedon's name linked with Buffy and the cool trailer that drew audiences regardless - soon everybody was looking for the dvd boxsets!

I guess what I'm trying to say is don't throw out the idea of Zack's return completely. Even for DA fans it would add something extra to connect with.
lyric
Feb 23 2006, 11:50 PM
Oh, that was beautiful! So well put!
As to how to explain the non-Dark Angel fan audience who Zack is... I guess the same happened when 'Alec' was brought into the show. If you haven't seen season 1, you didn't know about Ben, and Alec being Ben's twin had a major affect on Alec and Max's relationship (as Alec said in 'Hello, Goodbye', "Must be hard, huh? Having me around? Some guy with Ben's face, making you think about things you'd rather forget?"). But you got a sense of what was going on the first time we saw him in 'Designate This', and you've learnt more in 'Hello, Goodbye'. And it was done with a few flashes and a few lines being exchanged between Alec and Max. It took, what? Four scenes (give or take)?
So if we can make suggestions, here's mine: Max can find herself saying that she wish Zack was here (Terminal City), so he can tell her what to do. Someone will ask who Zack is... Few lines, some flashes, and cutting off to Zack...
In the situation that Max had found herself in, she probably needed all the help she could get. And who's better than her big brother?

I too agree about Zack. I realize it might not have been in your original plan to have him return, but screen plays/ scripts are always being revised.
I do think that maybe, and this is just a maybe, we could see someone important die.

Not saying it would be Max or Logan, but maybe one of the other supporting crew. Just a thought. Sometimes it becomes a bit unbelievable no matter how much you like the series or crew or whatever, that no one in the lime light dies. Just a thought.

same here - please don't get rid of Alec

and don't hook him up with Asha. Asha was always a loose end and sadly didn't fit in with the group that well ...
Never thought about killing off important characters before

it kind of depends on the effect you want from the story. If you kill off one of the main characters like Joshua for example, it may have a deep impact on the audience. Well it would on me

But then look at 'Meow' and Tinga's story (short as it was) was quite devastating because of what she went through and how badly it ended for her.
Not sure it has to be an important character as such, just one with enough of a story we can relate to (like Ben/Tinga) and does the job of bringing dramatic change ...

But if she was still alive, that would be interesting. WOuld see support Max even after everything they've been through? Would her hate for Max die away simply because Manticore was no more? Brin(?) seemed liek a real hard ass after she got brainwashed so its hard for me to see her as the cheerful type she seemd to be before Zack and Max handed her over.

Quick suggestions:
- Working the eyes only group along with Asha's group + the old Jam Poni groupe to do pro-transgenic propaganda while the struggle goes on.
- Cult Sabotage on the outside (but some trouble in the gov regarding White)
- A failed attack on Terminal city from Gov or Whites people.
- I don't see this happening in a close future, but the whole thing about the end of the world and Max being the only hope for Earth related the cultists could be exploited... or simply just advanced. I guess we can expect some sort of development of new "abilities" (like in Freak Nation when she goes all slow motion on them and tells people they are coming in) in either highly critical situations involving the lives of others (ex: end of movie)... but that would leave more suspense too... But anyhow, a general continuation of storyline regarding runes and cult.
- We could encounter Sandman (and he could die also)
- Crazy pressure from all media on transgenics
- Some secret way to communicate out of Terminal city (for food, supplies and stuff) like an underground passage to a building outside of Terminal city
Voilà.
Good luck, though very ambitious; stay realistic in your efforts. Have you communicated with anybody about how a production like this would go about in being successfull? Different steps? Legal requirements, etc.?

Dandyman,
I have talked to representatives at 20th Century Fox. They basically said that first the script MUST be approved by James Cameron or Charles H. Eglee. They also mentioned that Cameron owns all the rights to the Dark Angel franchise. Which means that I'd have to either A.) Buy the rights from him, which would cost millions and millions of dollars. or B.) Get him to sign over the rights specifically for this project. I would love for him to direct it though, which would mean that he wouldn't have to sign the rights over because he would be partaking and approving of the project. As far as what I would have to do to get either of those guys to approve the script, i don't know. I imagine I will have to submit it, then if it gets turned down I would have to revise it and re-submit it. I also know that I will not go anywhere with this without an agent. So as soon as I have finished the initial script, I will get it edited and make the changes that are recommended. Then I will get an agent and have it submitted to 20th Century Fox, then they could pass it on to James Cameron or Charles H. Eglee. If Fox passes on it, then I could submit it to other studios, and try to get them to buy the rights from Cameron, or get Cameron's approval.

Alrighty, sounds nice

I do have another comment: You aren't following books... but the books were done with the consent a small collaboration of James Cameron... So I'm wondering if it would create a contradiction somewhat... you'd need to take them into acct and maybe try and fit in an extra part if you don't want the books to be your guidelines. Anyhow, good luck with it all, it's very much something I'd like to see

Maybe you could try communicating with James Cameron about more details before you get too far into the last stages. This might mean agent thingy... but anyhow, just throwing it out there.

I just finished Watching Dark Angel Season 2 ( i bought both season on dvd). I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see what would have been season 3 made into a movie. If you are able to pull this off, please can you tie up the following loose ends:
• Max/Logan Virus (Let them finally be togther)
• Find Sandamen (have him answer Max's Questions)
• The Cult/Appocolypse (Find out what is up with this breeders cult and how Max saves the world from them) oh and maybe Agent White changes sides cause he wants his son back
• Human Terror over Mutants (Have the TransGenics help save the world from the breeder cult and have everyone see it, so they embrace the "Freaks" and stop fearing them)
Side Note:
• It would be really Sexy to See Alec and Max have a fling...maybe when she's given up all hope of being with Logan and she's feeling really low or even better during one of her "in Heat" moments so she could say she couldn't control herself. Then they find a cure for her virus and she goes back to Logan feeling all guilty...But of course in the end he forgive her...and blah blah blah happy ending
Second Note:
• DON"T MAKE THIS MOVIE UNLESS YOU HAVE ALL THE MAJOR ACTORS BACK...DON'T TRY TO REPLACE THEM, IF THEY CAN'T DO IT THEY SHOULDN'T BE WRITTEN IN. ALSO IT WOULD BE AWSOME IF YOU COULD SWING IT....BUT JAMES CAMON AS YOUR DIRECTOR WOULD BE THE F'in " CHERRY!

oooh noo! ... I don't want Max & Alec to have a 'fling'. Sure they look good together but that's where it stops for me. Max sees Alec as more of a buddy, specially when they have their moments on the needle it's like confiding in a friend ... I can't see these characters get it on beyond that. (But then being an Alec fan I just don't want to see it

Max and Alec having a fling would be incest.
I wouldn't make it into a movie. There are too many loose ends to be tied up. Putting it all into 3 hours would be rushing it and wouldn't be realistic. What is needed is two additional seasons.
Any continuation of the story without all the original actors would be fanfic, and I would not consider it 'Dark Angel'. It would be "one person's perspective on which direction the show would take".

I can't see Alba coming back for another series - let alone two - she was more positive to the idea of a movie (after all rumor had it she discussed it w Cameron) plus she was getting fed up with the way network execs were treating the show (
I'm not sure of the politics on that one
). So if they want to give a movie a shot I'd go see it - it's better than nothing.

My first thought was that you're probably right and Brin was one of the first to go to White's check points. But most of the soldiers that we saw going were pretty young. And Brin seemed to be one of Manticore's top soldiers. So she might have been away on a mission when Max took Manticore down.
I'd like to think that she's alive, but I don't think that she'd hate Max (or that she ever did). Would she work with Max and Alec? Hmmm. Could be. But I think it may be more interesting if not all of Manticore's 'kids' will work on the same side. That there will be two groups: One led by Max and Alec, and the other led by those who were still loyal to Manticore, even if Manticore didn't exist anymore (or did it?).
Ryu
Mar 16 2006, 10:39 PM
Interesting. It'd be nice to see two factions of transgenics. I'm sure there are many that are still loyal to Manticore considering that a lot were turning up at the check points. But Manticores last check point (the one Max rigged) said to lay low. SO if they were loyal to the big M, could it be argued that they wouldnt join up with Max or any other non-Manticore approved faction?
It appears that most of the guys who joined up with Max were the ones that were outcast even in Manticore and people who really had no other place to turn to.

I think that your movie should answer the key questions of DA.
1) What happened to Brin?
2) Where (and whom) is/was Max's mother?
3) Did Lydecker survive?
4) Who is Sandeman?
5) Who did Renfro talk to in French in Designate this?
And of course you should take care of all the loose ends of S2, like the virus.
By the way, how are you planning to make the movie? The Movies? Computer animation? Real actors? GO TO FOX?

And don't hook up Max with Alec. She belongs to Logan.
If you don't believe me, ask UNCLE SAM:
