From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ang Lee comes an epic American love story, Brokeback Mountain, the winner of the Golden Lion Award for Best Picture at this year's Venice International Film Festival. The film is based on the short story by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Annie Proulx and adapted for the screen by the team of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana. Set against the sweeping vistas of Wyoming and Texas, the film tells the story of two young men -- a ranch-hand and a rodeo cowboy -- who meet in the summer of 1963, and unexpectedly forge a lifelong connection, one whose complications, joys, and tragedies provide a testament to the endurance and power of love.

Early one morning in Signal, Wyoming, Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) meet while lining up for employment with local rancher Joe Aguirre (Randy Quaid). The world which Ennis and Jack have been born into is at once changing rapidly and yet scarcely evolving. Both young men seem certain of their set places in the heartland – obtaining steady work, marrying, and raising a family – and yet hunger for something beyond what they can articulate. When Aguirre dispatches them to work as sheepherders up on the majestic Brokeback Mountain, they gravitate towards camaraderie and then a deeper intimacy.

At summer's end, the two must come down from Brokeback and part ways. Remaining in Wyoming, Ennis weds his sweetheart Alma (Michelle Williams), with whom he will have two daughters as he ekes out a living. Jack, in Texas, catches the eye of rodeo queen Lureen Newsome (Anne Hathaway). Their courtship and marriage result in a son, as well as jobs in her father's business.

Four years pass. One day, Alma brings Ennis a postcard from Jack, who is en route to visit Wyoming. Ennis waits expectantly for his friend, and when Jack at last arrives, in just one moment it is clear that the passage of time has only strengthened the men's attachment. In the years that follow, Ennis and Jack struggle to keep their secret bond alive. They meet up several times annually. Even when they are apart, they face the eternal questions of fidelity, commitment, and trust. Ultimately, the one constant in their lives is a force of nature – love.

I saw Brokeback Mountain awhile ago, I thought it was very good. Got to attend a free screening. I thought it was beautifully done. I loved how they captured the mountains. Wonderful Cinematography. Such a sweet and engaging love story. I've heard some people say it was a little to graphic for them with the sex and intimate scenes, but I thought it was portrayed naturally. The acting was amazing by all, Heath, Jake, Michelle, Anne. The musical score, is minimalist, but beautiful, and fits the mood of the film perfectly. I love the tag line for the movie, it describes love as a "force of nature" – it is an emotion so strong that once it grabs hold of you, it will never let you go. All in all, "Brokeback Mountain" speaks to the wish we all could be able to rewind our lives, realize a moment of true bliss before us and from that point choose a different path for ourselves.

Yes, there is that. Some may not remember but, there is a second where there is full frontal. It's from far away, and I don't even know if it's actually them. They jump of a cliff into a lake naked so you kinda of see things flailing in the air. It's nothing much and it's very quick so.
lilycody
oh right i'd forgot about that.... blush.gif i guess since it wasn't a close up i didn't stick in my mind! lol.gif

Just saw it on DVD and thought it was amazing - up until the end, of course. Really didn't understand why Lee would just leave us with such an unclear ending. If someone could explain it to me, I'd appreciate it. grin.gif

The directors do that to make us think about what's gonna happen next, I find it intresting if you ask me. grin.gif
lilycody
i really liked how it ended..it left it kind of open to the imagination you know!!!
vc318
I just thought the ending was pretty abrupt. I mean, it's like the first half of the film is really deep then all of a sudden Ennis (Heath's character) takes this turn into some harsh person towards Jack (Jake's character) literally blaming him for why he was the way he is. What's up with that?!
Pixie Queen
It ended that way in the short story as well, even if it was abrupt, you can make out your own ending. Personally I felt that Ennis had resentment towards Jack mainly because he'd been told that it was alright to like women but not alright to like guys and he couldn't be as open about the situation as Jack was because of what he had seen when he was a boy (eg. Earl in the ditch).

Nice interview with Michelle Williams talking about Heath, her well being and making Brokeback Mountain: Source: Cristina Everett, www.nydailynews.com

" It's been more than a year since Heath Ledger's tragic death, and Michelle Williams is still dealing with the loss. "After the first year, the pain is less intense; it's less immediate," the actress tells the October issue of Vogue. "But the magical thinking goes away too. And that's a whole new reckoning." For some time after the death, Williams, 29, says she didn't know what her boundaries were in regards to speaking about her former boyfriend, who died of an accidental drug overdose at the age of 28 in January 2008. "I can talk about grief because that's mine, about single parenting, about trying to balance work and kids," she said. "But what I don't have to talk about is what happened between Heath and me in our relationship." Williams and Ledger, who first met when they filmed "Brokeback Mountain," had daughter Matilda Rose, now 3, during their three-year relationship. The couple amicably split in August 2007. "'Brokeback Mountain' was an unrepeatable moment in time, a very charmed time in my life," she shared. "I was in love. I was in a movie I was proud to be a part of, and with a beautiful brand-new baby. Everything was good in that moment." Sadly, the actress' good times turned dark when Ledger passed. "I was holding it together by a string and a paper clip in the fall and winter," she reveals. "I didn't know if I could keep it all together… You console yourself by saying it's all a deepening process. But it's wired."

Williams says it is the couple's daughter that has helped her through the grieving process. "Every time I really miss him and wonder where he's gone, I just look at her," she says. Another source of strength – and love – came to the actress last year when she began dating director Spike Jonze, from whom she's now split. "I thought falling in love again was the only thing that was going to save me from the pain," she says. "This erroneous idea: It just makes things more complicated."
Dating as a single mother didn't make things any easier, Williams added, admitting "I obviously don't know how to do it." As for her future, Williams is looking forward to raising Matilda.
"I feel hopeful and grateful," she says. "For a while I thought we had lost everything. It makes you want to love better and live better."
