Hi guys.

....I've really had it up to here with my older cat. About six months ago we got another cat who is much younger than her. Since we got her, she (my older cat) has been pooping on the couch and marking everything in sight. I don't have the heart to get rid of them but my 1 bedroom, 1.5 bath condo can't take it either. What should I do?

That's a hard one. I wish I knew shrug.gif I have problems with tantrum peeing and it's not fun. My house just smells bad sad.gif and I keep the bedrooms closed. I can tell you the good odor neutralizers.

No, that doesn't work since I only have 1 bedroom. I wish I had an extra room for them. They destroyed another couch today. sad.gif What should I do?

I don't have much advice but....

Does she go in the box at all? I found one of my cats doesn't like going in the box when another cat has. Instead she will poop right next to the box (oddly she will still pee in the box). But she will not touch the litter if it's been used already. Instead she'll stand on the edge of the box and go (which has to be hard to do!) and "dig" on the walls and sides of the box but never in the litter.

I read once that you should have a box for every cat. Have you tried that? Some cats will not share boxes with others.

My cat, Ava, has a new thing and I have no idea how to stop her. She loves pictures & negatives and is eating them! So far I think I've caught her everytime before she gets too much. I have no idea where she's getting them half the time (because all my photos not albums are in boxes in the closet) but I keep coming home to chewed up negatives & pictures. I can't figure out why she's doing it. She knows she isn't supposed to because as soon as she sees me she grabs them and takes off running. sad.gif

I feel for you. I have had problems similar in the past. I'm sure your older cat feels very territorial and probably a little bit threatened by your new addition. Often, peeing and pooping outside the litter box is a behavioral thing, like a toddler throwing a temper tantrum.
LisaKay suggested getting another litter box. Have you tried that? When I got a second cat, I added a litter box and my boys actually used one litter box to pee in and one to poop in. Worked perfectly - -until I brought #3 home! smile.gif Anyhow, my oldest cat would sometimes poop right outside the litter box, I think because he was trying to indicate to me how offended he was about something. And he was very particular about his kitty litter - - wanted it clean (don't blame him) and it couldn't be the super cheap stuff (he's a snob)
I would suggest, other than adding a litter box, asking your vet about it. He/she may be able to give you suggestions to help ease the transition. Also, be sure and give your elder pet plenty of attention - - I'm sure she feels her home life has been disrupted by the new addition.
Having lived in a 1 bedroom, 1 bath condo myself, I found that those Air Wick air fresheners (the kind that plug into outlets) work pretty well for keeping odors at bay. Also (of course) scooping the litter boxes as often as you can; I tried twice a day, morning and night. When I was home, I would scoop as soon as they used it. Don't know if you know or not, but cats generally don't like those hooded litter boxes. They are great for us (we don't have to see the mess) but the hoods cause odors to get "locked in" and a cat's sense of smell is much greater than ours, so they may be picky about relieving themselves somewhere that odors are locked in.
Anyhow, I hope you find a quick and painless solution! Keep us posted!

Great suggestions. I always seem to have old kitties around in the house and they are very bad about not using boxes, and also barfing. I have 4 to 5 boxes but they still are bad sad.gif Oh well. shrug.gif

VC, I found a new site today & found an article you might read. Inappropriate Uniration. It might have some new suggestions for you.

I am giving an answer to the one who is angry with the old cat. It is jelousi, never get another cat if you are not sure that the old spoiled one can handle it. If You cannot handle them you have to give them away to some kind of rescue center in the town you live...or else you will end up hating your old cat, who really cannot help it.
Don't ever get an animal unless you have the space and your mind set to handle what comes with two cats in a small place. It is very weong sorry.

i would try having 2 litter boxes. how long has this been happening? I have 4 cats and all were introduced slowly. 2 are older 2 are younger. How did you introduce them?

Here's my two cents.

Is the cat spayed/neutered? That might be one reason. If they aren't spayed/neutered, they're doing what they're programed to do. Mark their territory. A new animal has been brought into the home and they're trying to show this little baby cat that they were here first.

If they are a spayed/neutered, another reason why they're doing this is probably because they're unhappy that a newer, younger cat is in the house. Sometimes, when an older cat has been alone and the only animal in the house and they are suddenly introduced to a new animal, they get very controlling, distant and upset by this. When you got the new kitten, you should have brought both cats to a neutral place, ie a car or outside, and let them meet someplace they could both examine one another. Because the older cat had been in the house by themselves, they came to realize the house was "theirs" and they get pissed off when another cat comes into the home.

Also, the older cat is a female and the younger cat is a female as well? Sometimes, female cats can become motherly with the little baby female cat. BUT, sometimes they do not become this way. When I got my second dog, we found out that it's good to get a male dog when you already have a female dog, and vice versa.

Just let them warm up to one another. If that doesn't work, you might need to get rid of the baby kitten. sad.gif

I hope that helped.
