JAMES TO CO-STAR IN FEATURE ADAPTATION OF “P.S. I LOVE YOU”

JAMES MARSTERS has been set as a co-lead in the feature film “P.S. I
Love You” for Alcon Entertainment. The film stars Hillary Swank, Kathy
Bates, Gerald Butler, Lisa Kudrow and Gina Gershon. James will portray
the role of ‘John’, the best friend and partner of Gerald Butler’s
character.

The film is based on the novel by Cecilia Ahern and will be directed by
Richard LaGravenese. The picture centers on a widow whose life is
rejuvenated when letters left by her husband send her on a series of
adventures. Production will begin mid-October. The film will be distributed by
Warner Bros.

James is in a new movie currently filming in Ireland. Hillary Swank is the leading lady and she has some of the first pictures of the filming up at ther site. No James yet...but stay tuned.
And from the Belfast Telegraph today:

Cecelia is a star in her own right especially as the best-seller that made her name, PS I Love You - described as an Irish Sleepless in Seattle - is soon to be made into a film."

PS I Love You will star James Marsters, Hillary Swank and Kathy Bates.

The theme of all her stories is that true love never dies.

Spike In P.S., I Love You ?

Just another article (but with a few new thoughts) on Screenhead (a movie review blog)

James Marsters has made something of a one eighty. The enigmatic actor, known best for the role of Spike in Joss Whedon's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel", certainly didn't surprise anyone when he appeared on the WB's (now CW's) "Smallville" in both this and the last season - but he certainly did raise a few eyebrows when he turned up on the cast list of "P.S., I Love You", co-starring alongside Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler.

Based on a book by Cecelia Ahern, the film follows Holly Kennedy, a young Irish widow who recently lost a husband to a brain tumor. But Holly soon discovers a package of letters written by her late love Gerry, containing ten months of specific tasks to help Holly move on with her live.

Swank will play Holly Kennedy with Butler in the role of Gerry. Marsters will play John McCarthy, Gerry's best friend and the husband of Holly's best friend, Sharon.

The premise seems interesting, and I have a feeling the Irish setting will also contribute to the film's allure and perhaps explain Marsters' casting. Regardless, its good to know there's one more star with the career post-Whedon.

Luxiferi on LJ has had an encounter with James. The hair looks kind of 50's but the story may be set in the past or have a flashback scene...anyway,I like it but I bet JM doesn't (always says he hates having wavy, curly hair) . lol.gif

Berengaria
Hilary Swank will be on The View tomorrow morning. Probably for Freedom Writers but PSILY could be mentioned. Catch it if ya can!
Berengaria
Saw the View today. Hilary looked good, sounded intelligent and down to Earth but no mention of PSILY. She is currently promoting Freedom Writers. But Hillary Swank is on "The Tonight Show" tomorrow night. That should be a long enough segment that PSILY might just get mentioned. Fingers crossed. nod.gif
Berengaria
Well,Hilary mentioned PSILY on the Tonight Show but only to tell about the incident where Gerry Butlers suspenders flew off and hit her in the forehead....requiring some stitches.

She did also say that she still clips coupons and buys in bulk at Cosco's...so seems like a down to Earth girl that James would approve of. nod.gif
Canadarox
*L* I don't even shop at cosco a lot ... that's expensive and you have to pay for membership *L* I go with my grandmother or aunt sometimes as their guest sometimes.

I did buy my computer desk there ....I think lol.gif
Berengaria
She said that when she moved from the trailer park with her mother to go to Hollywood, that they slept in a car, then had a friend who was selling his house,so they could sleep there at night but had to be out every morning, When she went on auditions, she would get a dress from a store and return it right after the audition. Now,she has 2 Academy Awards. So,I don't think you can get any more self made than that. But I know James had a long stretch of having little money, so it's nice to see that hard work and talent really can pay off for you (though often enough it doesn't) .
Berengaria
Hilary is a busy lady these days. Monday she was the first person this year to get a star on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood. Two Oscars before she was 30?? I think she deserves it! nod.gif

Hope to see James' hand and footprints there someday too. grin.gif
Berengaria
Saw Hilary on the Ellen Degeneres Show on Tuesday. She told the same stories and didn't mention PSILY at all. But she seemed nice and genuine. I bet James liked working with her. nod.gif
Berengaria
They had an advance screening of PSILY last night. The kind where it's free and they give the audience cards to fill out. Well.LipsOf*Spike was actually there and is letting all the nice folks at CDS grill her about it. Go there and scroll down to LO*S' posts.

Beware...there are big spoilers there! nod.gif
Vinity
Good on her for getting to see it.

I have a rant.gif how the heck is this man not more famous? It is just beyond me. He's beautiful, he can REALLY act, he has a great work ethic. Why are so many people with less talent doing better? It's just beyond me? shrug.gif
Berengaria
Here's how I see it:
Was a working regional theater actor/manager until he was 35.
(successful at producing and acting in plays, happy doing it,little "fame" or money)
Came to LA,got the role of "Spike".
(a "temporary" gig that lasted eight years...gave him a devoted fan following, good money situation, but little "fame" in Hollywood among the people who hire. )

His stated plan after "Angel" went off the air was to get rid of the blond hair so casting people would think he could play something besides drug addicts/rock stars. Do some guest appearances for a few years...and then he thought he would be "highly employable" because he'd have a good resume to show off.

He seems to be right on target. It's been 3 years since Angel went off the air. Besides the tv roles on "The Mountain" and "Smallville",He's got the lead roles in "Cool Money" and "Shadow Puppets"...and a small but "juicy" part in a major motion picture "PSILY" and another guest role in the new series "Saving Grace"(which debuts in July). He's also going to be the voice of "Lex Luther" in a Superman animated movie and ,of course,he does the Dresden audiobooks.

As an actor,I'm sure he wishes he would be offered more and better parts...always. But I think that's why he mentioned being "grateful" and staying that way in his Holiday message to his fans. He is grateful to be getting steady work and building up the networking necessary to be hired. I've heard him say that he doesn't care about being a star...he is perfectly happy being a "character actor". He expects to work at acting his whole life....and I think it is clear he will be able to do that.
Vinity
Granted, I totally agree with all that but I just look at the man and think how has someone not snagged him for that major role?

If he's happy and enjoying himself that's the best thing, I guess.
Berengaria
Well,I can't say that I haven't had the same exact thought...many a time. I especially can't beieve that Fox,who has seen him time and again come in and lift the ratings of whatever show they put him on (I've actually heard him called "The Show Doctor" ) ....doesn't translate into them wanting him for his own series.

I think he suffers both from Hollywood types not knowing about BTVS or thinking only of SMG when they do. no.gif

WE know how important he was to that show...but actually he rarely had more than 3 minutes onscreen. Just seemed like more because he got a lot of the great lines...plus he really knows how to make an impact in a small scene.

Hilary Swank: The Comeback Chick?
Categories: ps i love you, 300
Hilary Swank What a nasty town. You make one movie that doesn't cause audiences and critics to sob and soil their cheeks with runny mascara and suddenly the world is all huffing at you like you're some 90210 washup.

I'm talking, of course, about Oscar-winning heavyweight Hilary Swank. Anyone who thinks she's gone all Halle Berry in the way of bad choices can shut it. First of all, I will go down swinging that she did just fine in The Reaping. (And hey, she didn't even get to make out with Bruce Willis!) Alas, her comeback—silly as it is to use that phrase—is right around the corner.
P.S., I Love You is testing very, very well. As in, you would have to be a heartless half-wit moron not to enjoy this movie, brought to us by writer-director-really fast and eloquent speaker Richard LaGravenese. Who dat, you say? Well, he penned Freedom Writers in which Hil went where Michelle Pfeiffer and Gloria Estefan have gone before. Um, so you might say that P.S. is his comeback too. Heehee.

Anyway look at the P.S. cast: Hilary, Gerard Butler, Lisa Kudrow, Kathy Bates and Gina Gershon.

"No one has seen Gerry [Butler] or Hilary like this before," spewed Richard. "It's romantic and funny and tragic and loving. He's sexy."

Wait. I get what he's saying about "Gerry" because mainly we've seen him growl with his shirt off all over that 300 movie. But Hilary, well, we've see her box, cross-dress, do the red lipstick seductress thing and plod through a river of blood. Hell, we've even seen her bunk with Tori Spelling!

So, I pushed Richard to elaborate on what exactly we're going to see.

"Well, you know, for me anyway, she's beautiful and funny and sexy and vulnerable, and she plays a wife and a girl, a woman who has to discover who she is without the man that she's loved for all of her adult life, all her young adult life," he says. "So, there are things that she's done in this movie that you've never seen her do before."

And by "things" I hope he means that she stopped working out for like six weeks and totally let her arms and abs go all flabby. You think? Nah. Me neither.

Hope you have a great, wonderful, safe trip...and return with lots of stories to tell. nod.gif

I'm not surprised the director didn't ention James. His part,as James says,is small but juicy.
Berengaria
A friend (thanks,Tubbyk) put me onto this article. Its about a young woman who wrote the theme song for P.S.I Love You. Apparently she's very young (19) and talented.

Laura Izibor is to play a special solo show in Dublin later this month.

Izibor will return to the live circuit next Tuesday (June 19) for a gig at Dublin's Crawdaddy venue, which will be recorded for future release.

The gig is being recorded by her record company Atlantic Records and will be put out as a live EP later in the year.

Izibor has just returned from the US where she has finished recording her album.

She is also set to have two tracks featured in two US movies this autumn.

Izibor has written the lead track to appear in The Nanny Diaries (starring Scarlett Johanssen, Laura Linney and Alicia Keys) and also the lead track for PS. I Love You (based on the best selling book, starring Hilary Swank).

Here's a trailer for the movie. Looks good although you see (briefly) James but don't hear him. And they don't mention him among the actors...what's up with that?? bawl.gif

Yep, it's the miracle of motion pictures that they can make a person look just about any way they want him to. nod.gif
I love the studded green guitar case...guess they don't want you to "miss" that he's got an Irish background! lol.gif
Vinity
I saw my first ad for this movie hurray.gif now it's 2 movies I'll have to see by myself sad.gif This and Sweeney Todd.
Berengaria
With me, it's August Rush and this. Been looking forward to both for a long time. Sweeney Todd...I'm not sure. I know its a great stage musical but if it's too "dark" (bloody) it may be more Ben's thing than mine. You see it first and let me know. nod.gif
Selkie
Oooh, I read the book last year and I loved it! SO glad James is in it! What character does he play? grin.gif
Berengaria
He is John McCarthy, the dead husband's (Gerry Butler) best friend. nod.gif
Selkie
Ah, cool! smile.gif
Berengaria
Yes,there was one pivotal emotional speech he got to give to Holly in the middle of the book. They let James film it and then said they were'nt putting it in because it didn't go with the tone of the movie (happy,upbeat)...but I hear that it will be included on the DVD. So I'm glad of that. nod.gif

Steve Himber,James Manager left this message on his site:

STEVE RECAPS EXCITING NIGHT

[12-10-07] It was a really wonderful, exciting night for James at the premiere of PS I Love You. The premiere was held at the historic Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. James arrived in a limo provided by the studio and proceeded to walk down the red carpet and do about 45 minutes of interviews. The press all wanted to know more about his upcoming role in Dragonball! He met up with his fellow cast mates (Hilary Swank, Gerard Butler, Harry Connick Jr., Lisa Kudrow and Gina Gershon) and they all took a cast photo before heading in to watch the movie. The movie (in my opinion) is a really well made, beautiful love story. I was really proud every time James’ character came on screen. When the movie let out, James was headed to the limo to go to the after party when he spotted a group of familiar faces (fans) waiting on the side and he ran over to say hello. He then headed off to the party to join everyone in celebrating the launch of the movie. He looked like a million bucks wearing a really sharp all black suit and shirt (no tie) - hard to imagine no jeans and t-shirt. - Steve

Another premiere video...it's so funny. Everyone knows exactly what designer they are wearing...James is like "My friend just threw this at me and told me to wear it." grin.gif

He says he was just getting "off the road"....and by friend, I'm guessing he means his publicist who accompanied him on the red carpet.
Vinity
He looked really good and like he was having a good time. Does he not like to do dress up that much? He's such a strange mix. lol.gif

So B, are you going tomorrow? grin.gif
Berengaria
He's pretty much a sneakers,(holey) jeans and t-shirt kind of guy. He wears shirts that fans give him at cons...and he wears the suits that "Cool Money" let him have at the end of filming. His English team also made him buy a few things when his fell apart during a tour. But clothes REALLY don't mean much to him.

I'm just glad they didn't ask for the name of his hair stylist! (he cuts his own hair) . lol.gif

At least he was real sure of his name....got that out there all right (See going to "press school" did teach him something) .

And yes, of course, I'm going tomorrow....and Ben said he'd go with me (when I offered to let him go watch something else). He is such a supportive guy. I'm extremely lucky...and I know it. nod.gif

I swear I feel I should just let her know when I'll be gone lol.gif
