Heroes' Milo Ventimiglia and Masi Oka

We talk to two members of the new NBC show about super powers, spoilers and what gives Batman his edge.
by Travis Fickett

September 26, 2006 - NBC's new show Heroes explores the lives of several people who discover that they have powers beyond the ordinary. At this summer's Television Critics Association event in Pasadena, IGN TV was able to grab two of the Heroes, actors Milo Ventimiglia (Gilmore Girls) and Masi Oka (Scrubs) for an exclusive chat.

IGN TV: So the buzz on this show here at the TCAs is that it might be the one to watch this season. How does that feel?

Milo Ventimiglia: As exciting as it is, that's also a scary prospect. For 10 or 11 years of my career, I've flown under the radar. I've been fortunate to work with some cool, creative people on some cool shows. But it's kind of a frightening prospect to think that this could just blow the ****** up. To think about the dynamic of how it's going to go, how people are going to react towards us and how we'll react with each other. I just go back to the adage of "keep your head on the page, keep your head on the page." Don't worry about the excitement or the bad and good things people are saying about the show and focus on the material and the job and the responsibility to the cast and the crew.

IGN TV: With a new producer of Gilmore Girls can you come back, do an episode?

Ventimiglia: To be real honest I don't see a future at Gilmore Girls anymore. I think the last episode I did where Rory shows up in Philly and toys with Jess a bit. He says you can't keep doing this to me - and she leaves. I think there's closure there and it's done. The primary reason that I went back to Gilmore was because of Dan and Amy (Palladino, the creators of Gilmore Girls). They kept saying they had some great things they wanted me to do and be a part of and I believed them and saw some nice growth for Jess. It was nice to come back and play a character I had played for a long time and see that he grew up. He didn't become an a**hole, but he turned into a nice young man. That all goes back to the writing. I don't see myself going back.

Masi Oka: He's part of our family now.

Ventimiglia: I am kind of busy now and won't even have the time.

IGN TV: Masi, you're looking back and in your past is Scrubs, are you seeing only Heroes now?

Oka: Well, it's on the same network, so…

Ventimiglia: Yeah, that's true. There's no WB anymore. I think I brought the network down.

Oka: I still love that show. I think Scrubs is brilliant. It's brilliant writing, and I owe a lot to those guys for my career. So if they ever want me back I'll gladly do it.

IGN TV: In the episodes you were in, did you work with Zach Braff as a director?

Oka: Actually no. One episode I was in was directed by Matthew Perry, oddly enough. But I've never worked with Zach as a director.

IGN TV: So your character can bend space and time?

Oka: Bend space and time, yeah.

IGN TV: And now your character is in New York?

Oka: We see him in New York at the end of the pilot, from there a chain of events happen that will either lead him to stay in New York or bring him back to Japan.

IGN TV: Milo, did you get any flak for revealing that you were an empath?

Ventimiglia: I think a smart person can deduce "why does he think he can fly, but he doesn't?"

IGN TV: In the pilot, what I saw, which was a rough cut with some unfinished effects, it wasn't that clear to me that you and your brother weren't both flying. But you're not?

Ventimiglia: No, my character can't fly. I know that was a spoiler question they were asking about Peter, and it's something Tim [Kring, Heroes creator] and I discussed. I think an audience member that pays attention to the small details, and you hear Peter say "my foot hovered before it hit the ground." Well did it? Or did he imagine it? And why? Why could he fly at a certain point and then not at another? And if his brother had no idea that he could fly, it's Peter's empathic feelings that brought it out of him.

IGN TV: So is Peter something of a recruiter for the heroes?

Ventimiglia: At this point, I don't know.

Oka: The writers are brilliant. They know what they're doing. The show asks a lot of questions, but you have to trust that they will answer them. As many questions as they ask, they give answers. It's what makes the show cool. That's why we don't like to give you too many spoilers because it will be answered, we guarantee that. The writers are so brilliant. Every episode just gets better and better.

IGN TV: There are some criticisms of shows like this, on say Lost, where there are more questions than answers.

Oka: Jesse Alexander, who is writing for our show, comes from Lost and he knew that was the case. So does Jeph Loeb. They're taking the experience from Lost and learning from it.

IGN TV: Masi, you said you've said you're a Manga fan. Are you a fan of American comics as well?

Oka: I haven't actually read too many American comics, to be honest with you. I was a big fan of Green Lantern and Spider-Man. But the one thing about Green Lantern I never got is why is he vulnerable to yellow? If you look at the color palette, yellow isn't the opposite of green, purple is.

IGN TV: Milo, are you a comic book fan?

Ventimiglia: You know, I haven't been in a long time. I was when I was a kid. And I never really went in too much for the super powered heroes, but the crazier ones.

IGN TV: Like who?

Ventimiglia: Batman. He doesn't have a power, he's just ********** crazy. If you think about it, that's what he is. He's very smart, really educated, built and just ********** crazy.

IGN TV: Did you like Batman Begins?

Ventimiglia: Oh yeah. That was just great. That's a dream role, to play Robin to Christian Bale's Batman. Also the Punisher, just the more realistic characters.

IGN TV: It does seem that's where this show is headed, to try and mine the reality of what people would really do with these powers.

Ventimiglia: That's exactly it, I think.

IGN TV: Peter seems to be a heroic person, being with people when they die and so forth.

Ventimiglia: Absolutely. I think Peter has been searching for his purpose in life, aside from caring for people that won't be around for much longer. So having this belief that he can fly, and having that taken away and it's his brother. There's such disappointment, but there's the potential that he has a different ability, and how potentially selfish could he get because he's never had anything for himself. It's always been about his brother and other people. I think that's an interesting dynamic to play.

IGN TV: How soon do you guys share scenes?

Both: Very soon.

Oka: Answers will be given. Trust the writers will not disappoint the viewers. There'll always be more questions, but answers will come.

UPDATED 1/24/07: TV Guide's Mike Ausiello has revealed that Missy Peregrym (Smallville) has been cast as Faith, a female temptress who, according to an earlier casting breakdown, "wields a tremendous amount of sex appeal" and is willing to "get her hands dirty" for her employer.

4. Spoilers for Unknown Episodes

- Another Hero will die before season's end.
- E! Online's Kristin says that Peter and Claire will "not get together."
- Hiro will be getting a new love interest, but not until Season 2.
- A major character who will die made their first appearance in the opening minutes of the Heroes pilot. Place your bets!
- There may be a reason why Sylar wants to stay in custody.
- We may finally be rid of Peter's bangs by the end of the season, as he may get a new look by that time.
- Characters such as Matt Parkman and Niki Sanders may be "circling" the main arcs of the series, but they will bec coming more into the bigger story later in the season.
- After the hiatus, Claire's relationship with her father becomes even more complicated. Claire does a lot of "soul searching." She continues to search for her "bio-parents."
- Niki/Jessica will soon be crossing over with Matt, and her story with Nathan Petrelli is not yet over.
- The nature of Niki Sanders' power will be explored later in the first season.
- In an upcoming story, in the last group of Season 1 episodes, Hiro will encounter himself and have a big adventure. (So much for the Bilinovitch Limitation Effect!)
- As if there was any doubt: there will be a second season of Heroes. It's not "official," but plans are alreday being made for it, including arcs for the start of season 2. Whatever is planned is said to be "great" and "a doozy."
- The nature of Sylar's power is purposely vague, because if he's digesting brains, it may look a bit silly and absurd. In a short version: He has an understanding of how others' powers work.
- Will all of the current Heroes make it to the end of the season? No.
- Are Charlie and Eden really dead, or will they be coming back? They're dead.
- Is the government involved with learning about these individuals? No.
- Will characters like Ando, Zach, or Mrs. Petrelli play a significant role? Yes, to some of those people.
- Can Micah communicate with machines or other electronics? Yes. ("He's like R2D2," Fuller said)
- Will Mohinder get any powers? No.
- Is Jessica a spirit or a ghost? Maybe.
- Is there a definitive bad guy/good guy status for any of the Heroes (ie Nathan)? No, it's very gray for everybody.
- Do they have a definitive ending to the season? Yes.
- Will the explosion happen? Yes. (Fuller then retracted to "Maybe.")
WildB
Hmm interesting specs on the last few eps.
Lady Isabel
Will the explosion happen? Yes. (Fuller then retracted to "Maybe.")

From TV Guide:
It's been over six months since we saw our favorite Heroes on TV, but for the past seven weeks the cast and crew have been hard at work to bring us "Volume III: Villains." Tather than wait patiently until the NBC series' September 22 return, we asked the cast some burning questions. Here's what we found out about the next season.

"It's unbelievable — Season 1 on steroids," says Jack Coleman (aka HRG). "The two things that Heroes does best are adrenalin and mystery, and these episodes have it in spades. You're going to see guest stars and plenty of other characters, but it's focusing on the core group."

Of that core group, HRG is rumored to be working with Sylar in the coming season. "[Zach Quinto] and I have a storyline," shares Coleman, "which kind of brings us into a direct confrontation... and maybe more."

Hiro gets to fight his own villain, but this time it's one with a comedic streak. "He's going to have an arch-nemesis," Masi Oka told us at the premiere of Get Smart. Daphne (played by Brea Grant) is a speedster who will be the Joker to Oka's Batman — "although in my mind it's more of Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner," he says. "You'll find Hiro playing a lot with ACME gadgets and falling flat on his face."

We caught up with Season 2 newbie Dania Ramirez at the Akademiks and BET Luxury Day at the Oasis Spa, where she was taking a short break from playing Maya. "There's a lot of focus on who she is as a person," she tells us about the new season. "Maya is in a different place. She's lost everybody and she's a lot more powerful." Maya is also sultry and deservedly so, "will hook up with a familiar character," Ramirez reveals with a sexy smile.

Well,i know that Noah and Sylar teams up,but i don`t think Claire will go bad.At least not present Claire.Future Claire,on the other hand...
I remember Jack saying something about Claire this season in a interview, but i can`t remember exactly what he said.I think she might be a bit different this season.

Oh that's right it could be Future Claire that is bad. I think I do remember reading that somewhere too.

Heroes Scribe Teases Big Returns, Romance & More!

080716davidanders.jpg
David Anders by Justin Lubin/NBC Photo
Daring to venture outside the Beverly Hilton base camp for the TCA press tour, on Wednesday morning I trekked to the extremely rural location where Heroes was shooting scenes involving, um, a familiar character, a brand-new one, and lots of intriguing mural art. Oh yeah, and there was a tortoise.

In between shooting videos with a trio of cast members, I grabbed a few minutes with story editor Chuck Kim. Interestingly, he said that Heroes is better for the WGA strike which forced the NBC series to wrap up its sophomore season in December.

"If Season 2 hadn't been cut, we were going to focus [the second half of the season] on the villains," he said. Instead, Volume III, kicking off Sept. 22, will take a more in-depth look at the temptation of the dark side. "The great thing is we've made [that arc] much better than it would have been," says Kim. "We'll be seeing some new [villainous] characters, but we'll also be dealing with our series regulars and see how their abilities are 'tempting' them."

Heroes' three-hour season-opening "event" (which kicks off with a "clip"/interview show) will wrap up any cliffhangers, then launch into the new arc, which in addition to villainy will explore romance ("I think the fans will really enjoy some of the connections we'll be making," teases Kim) and welcome a return... or two.

In addition to Kristen Bell's multiple-episode encore as Elle (she first resurfaces in the second half of the two-hour premiere), David Anders is expected back as Adam Munroe. Kim, however, wouldn't indulge my appeal to give Anders' fans any more to chew on. (But oh, how I tried....) "Adam is an immortal guy, so he can't die so easily," the scribe acknowledged. "It's pretty safe to say that he could come back at any time from that coffin" in which he was buried alive.

And when he does, will he be nastier than ever? Says Kim, "Well, he is pretty mad at Hiro!" — Matt Mitovich

With his abilities returned to him, serial killer Sylar (Zachary Quinto) relentlessly continues to accumulate other people's abilities, which leads him to the Bennet house. Bound to a secret company with a keen interest in people like his daughter, "H.R.G.," a.k.a. Noah Bennet (Jack Coleman), finds new purpose when his most dangerous, fantastic foes break out of custody and must be dragged back. Reeling from recent events and revelations, Claire Bennet (Hayden Panettiere), an indestructible high school cheerleader, struggles to define her identity and place in the world.

An act of heroism unveils an amazing secret about Niki Sanders (Ali Larter), a Las Vegas single mother with astonishing strength — and an unknown, hidden family. In Japan, Yamagato Industries heir Hiro Nakamura (Masi Oka) continues to use his ability to pierce the space-time continuum and manipulate time to leap into wild, international adventures with his best friend, Ando Masahashi (James Kyson Lee).

Nathan Petrelli's (Adrian Pasdar) attempted assassination leads several Heroes on a stunning spiritual quest to explain his power of flight. For his younger brother, Peter (Milo Ventimiglia), the future and present collide as his many absorbed powers lead him to discover that the only way to end the catastrophic moment facing the world is to do the unimaginable. Meanwhile, their ruthless mother Angela (Cristine Rose) and her associates continue their ongoing, complex machinations to change the world from the shadows.

Former LAPD officer Matt Parkman (Greg Grunberg) is taught new ways to use his expanding ability to hear and manipulate other's thoughts by an unlikely guide. Dr. Mohinder Suresh (Sendhil Ramamurthy), a genetics professor from India, takes a dangerous step into darkness as his research into those with extraordinary abilities living among us continues. Far from her Dominican Republic home, Maya Herrera (Dania Ramirez), who causes death when filled with fear or anger, begs Suresh to cure her – only to watch helplessly as he embraces his darker side.

SPOILER
Mohinder will end up with powers in Season 3. In fact, he gets super strength in the premiere episode of Season 3. What then? Here’s Kristin:

Halo in St. Paul, Minn.: I would love to hear something about Heroes!

How about some Mohinder dish? As was revealed in the Comic-Con screening of the season premiere, Mohinder (Sendhil Ramamurthy) is getting powers, and I can tell you that the powers you see exhibited at the end of the finale are not the end of the story. Before too long we’ll see him exhibit a nifty power that he shares with one of the top five comic-book superheroes of all time. Care to guess which hero and which power? (Here’s a hint: Homer Simpson had a pig version.)

If she’s talking about the Simpsons movie, Homer Simpson had a Spider-Man version of a pig. But he also dressed the pig up as Harry Potter. Since Kristin mentions that it’s a “nifty power” that “one of the top five comic-book superheroes of all time” possesses, I think I’m leaning towards Spider-Man. So aside from super strength, can Mohinder now climb walls? Well, that would certainly make sense.

Heroes is getting its very own geek squad.

Real-life BFFs and frequent collaborators Seth Green and Breckin Meyer are nearing a deal to join the cast of Heroes for multi-episode arcs, sources confirm to me exclusively.

As I first teased in this week's episode of Ausiello TV, the Robot Chicken duo will play Atlanta-based comic book nerds aficionados who cross paths with (and perhaps serve as advisors to) one of the Heroes. I'm told the names of their characters are still in flux, so there's a chance the cheeky monikers I referenced in ATV won't stick. Then again, they very well may. (Fingers crossed that at least one of them does.)

Got any theories as to what higher purpose Green and Meyer may serve in the Heroesverse? Is it just me, or do these two bring to mind a certain nerdy advisory panel from another popular sci-fi franchise? C'mon, it can't just be me.

I'm starting to think they are adding too many people to the cast and that might be the downfall of Heroes. People who love LOST (me being one) started hating it when they had too many new people taking up more screen time than their favorites. Heroes seems to be going down that same road...I hope not.

Some stuff from EW.com and Ausiello.

Question: I may be the only person on the planet who watches Heroes anymore, but could you please offer up some scoop? --Sarah
Ausiello: It's a shame, too, because the show is actually getting good again. And later this Spring it's going to get really good when Angela Patrelli receives the "Company Man" treatment via her very own origin episode! "We're going to understand her in a way that we hadn't before," teases consulting producer (and author of Heroes' original "Company Man" ep), Bryan Fuller.

Question: Could you please tell me if Tracy (Ali Larter) is one of the two major deaths planned for the current Heroes volume? --Justin
Ausiello: There are actually three deaths coming up -- two real and one a fake-out. I'm not saying which category Tracy falls under.

Some spoilers for tonight from TV Guide

Heroes Preview: Rebel's Identity Will Be Revealed!

Throughout Heroes' "Fugitives" volume, many of the super-powered world savers have been communicating with and taking orders from a mysterious ally named Rebel. This Monday (at 9pm/ET, on NBC), the truth behind that mystery will be revealed. But before that happens, Hiro Nakamura (Masi Oka) has to babysit a little one seemingly connected to Matt Parkman. We caught up with Oka to get the details on this diapered distraction, what Rebel is really up to, and just when (if it all) Hiro will get his powers back.

TVGuide.com: The last episode ended with Hiro discovering that the Matt Parkman he was trying to save was a baby. How is that going to play out?
Masi Oka: The baby is definitely a little bit extraordinary. More will be revealed about the baby and its origin. It's just another crossing of the paths in terms of the destinies of Hiro and Matt Parkman.

TVGuide.com: We knew Parkman's ex-wife was pregnant in Season 1, but Matt was sure it wasn't his baby. Is this kid even his?
Oka: That's all part of the reveal, but the baby is Matt Parkman's baby. So, what does that mean? We'll find out.

TVGuide.com: When Hiro gets to Parkman, what's his reaction?
Oka: It's like anything in life. You think you have your life sorted out, and you're ready to charge in and live your life for good, but now you have something to possibly protect. Once you become a father, it definitely changes your mindset and what you're willing to do. But at the same time, what does it mean to protect your child? Does it mean risking your life to make a better world, or doing nothing and staying at home?

TVGuide.com: I'd imagine Hiro was pretty baffled when he found the baby, too. What's going on in his head?
Oka: I think Hiro's definitely a little bit shocked — he was not expecting it. And Hiro shies away from babies. After having a stern father figure and also going through what he went through with his mother, he's a little uncomfortable. He doesn't know how to behave around babies. So, there's definitely going to be a little comedy based on all that — you have two men and a baby.

TVGuide.com: Rebel sent Hiro to find this baby. Will we find out more about Rebel and his/her connection to Hiro?
Oka: Well, you will find out who Rebel is Monday. You will absolutely know who Rebel is.

TVGuide.com: Is it someone we know or a new character?
Oka: [Pauses] It will not be someone completely new.

TVGuide.com: Hiro seems to have learned that he can be a hero without powers. Will that continue to be the case for him?
Oka: He's learned his lesson in not having powers. He's gone through his journey, but Hiro will definitely get his powers back — this Monday or in the next episode. But there's going to be a little twist to his power. It's going to be a little different.

TVGuide.com: Could that twist have something to do with the show's commitment to no longer time-travel?
Oka: I can say we're definitely not going to have any more time travel. Being able to time-travel is so powerful. You can do too much and it creates a lot of headaches. So, in order to keep the story clean and cohesive, the writers have made a decision to do away with time-travelling.

TVGuide.com: That aspect of the show has been pointed to in much of the negative press around the series. Has that impacted general fan reaction to you and your character?
Oka: When I've interacted with fans, they've all been very gracious. They still love the show and they still love the character. For me, watching as a fan, I think Hiro has gone through so much. I do want him to grow a little bit but still remain who he is. He's very pure at his core. And perhaps when trying to bring up the comedy, as seasons have changed, Hiro became more of a clown than he needed to be. Now he's not as naive, but he still believes in his comic book destiny.

TVGuide.com: What's it been like having Bryan Fuller back?
Oka: It's been amazing working with Bryan. He's always been a fantastic writer and a fantastic friend. I loved Pushing Daisies, which didn't get the life span it probably deserved, but it's great to have him back. Having him be a part of that magical first season and then step away and come back, it brings back that energy and kind of an outside perspective. It's great to have a writer everyone respects and enjoys working with back in the room. And the show's going toward having smaller and more character-based stories, so having Bryan there really helps with that focus.

TVGuide.com: Can Hiro and Ando exist without one another?
Oka: They compliment each other well. Those create something special. The whole is greater than the sum of their parts. They need each other, but at the same time, we've gotten to a point where they can go their own ways if necessary.

TVGuide.com: What can we expect from Hiro and Ando as the season works toward the finale?
Oka: When Hiro gets his powers back, there's kind of a final mission. Rebel has something in mind for them once the current mission is over. So, we're moving forward to a finale that wraps a lot of things up. The volume started with Hiro being captured, so he knows that some of his fellow powered folk have been captured as well. He's going to have a hand in trying to fix that situation somehow. But it also forces him to make a choice, and he's going to have to make a sacrifice in a situation that could be life threatening.

TVGuide.com: Can we assume that Rebel is going to become the leader of the heroes?
Oka: Well, you can assume anything you want. [Laughs]

Question: Please, please, please give us a hint about whom Sylar kills in Monday's Heroes season finale! --Claire

Ausiello: It's a major character, and the death definitely sticks. But there is a twist. (Hint: It's possible no one will be leaving the show.) BTW, the finale is fantastic. It's compelling, suspense-filled and, most importantly, events occur consecutively and in the present day. Heroes is back, people!

Rumor has it the show is losing one of it's major Characters. The person will be killed off for good.

All I can say if it is Milo (Peter), I do not think I will watch anymore.

Major Death Revealed: Heroes Is Killing Off Adrian Pasdar

Today 6:02 PM PST by Kristin Dos Santos

As I have been teasing for weeks, Heroes is killing off a major character later this season.

The death is a huge twist for the show so I didn't want to ruin the surprise for you, but now that another outlet has leaked the secret, it's time for me to reveal the truth:

Adrian Pasdar's Nathan Petrelli is the major character death happening on Heroes this season, and no, he wasn't told he was getting fired, he learned about it from a script.

But what about reports from fellow Heroes castmembers that the Petrelli brothers were definitely safe?

After Heroes star Greg Grunberg recently told a radio station that Nathan and Peter weren't the Heroes death, I doubled back with my source and he confirmed, "I know Adrian is getting killed off and was pissed about it because they didn't tell him...Greg could be talking about another death but I think he's probably covering and throwing fans off."

And of course, Greg certainly doesn't want to meet the same fate!

What do you think of the news that Adrian Pasdar is being killed off Heroes for good? Shocking since he's one of the major original players? Or, in the words of a certain Brazilian television aficionado I know: "Again? How many times have they killed that guy on that show?"

Well I can't say I am too surprised. I mean the guy was pretty much killed off at the end of last season.
