Great news - a summer project as we had hoped for. smile.gif Details below:

From Variety:

Heigl to star in '27 Dresses'
'Grey's' actress to be featured in Spyglass comedy
By MICHAEL FLEMING
Heigl

"Grey's Anatomy" star Katherine Heigl will topline the romantic comedy "27 Dresses."
Scripted by "The Devil Wears Prada" screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna, "27 Dresses" will be directed by Anne Fletcher.

Spyglass is financing the film, and Roger Birnbaum, Gary Barber and Jonathan Glickman will produce. Production begins in New York and Rhode Island in May when Heigl goes on hiatus from the series.

Heigl will play a single woman who has served as a bridesmaid 27 times. She is enlisted once again for the job, and this time it's particularly painful: Her sister is marrying the man the bridesmaid is madly in love with.

McKenna originally hatched the project with producer Bobby Newmyer, who died in 2005. He will be the film's exec producer, and Erin Stam will be co-producer.

Dana Fox ("The Wedding Date") did a rewrite of McKenna's original script, and McKenna is returning to do a final pass before production begins.

Heigl considered several offers after buzz began building on "Knocked Up," the Judd Apatow-directed Universal comedy in which Heigl stars with Seth Rogen.

Fletcher made her directing debut on the dance hit "Step Up," which she also choreographed.

Heigl's repped by Paradigm, Fletcher by UTA.

Congrats to Katie! This is great news!

Yay! This sounds great! Very happy to hear this!

Congrats to Katie hurray.gif. I heard about this movie a little while ago. I loved the concept of "always a bridesmaid but never a bride".

27 times...takes it to a whole new level smile.gif
I am not sure I have been to 27 weddings and that includes my own lol.gif

Looking forward to finding out a bit more about this project. If anyone has any more details please post them here.

Seems like "Knocked Up" is going to do wonders for Katie's career smile.gif
Musiagal
Sounds like a interesting chick flick and should be good. I'm excited for this new project as I am about June 1st.

27 tacky, taffeta dresses, no doubt.

Nah I've not eloped that often either wink.gif lol.gif

Hehe lol.gif. I think it's a smart idea that Katie is working hard in other mediums, so she isn't only solely on GA nod.gif. It smart to work in various mediums to get yourself out there smile.gif. Granted she always done that lol, but I mean some tv show castmembers tend not to do it shrug.gif.
Living in Oblivion
oh wow! this is sooo great! i am already looking forward to this movie and it probably wouldn't be shown until next year. at least we have knocked up coming out this summer. i need my katie fix. smile.gif

seems like our katie is becoming the new queen of romantic comedies. we haven't had a new america's sweetheart ever since julia and meg gave up on the genre. katie would make a great america's sweetheart, don't you think? nod.gif

i agree, IAE. i believe the only other people who have been working on other things are patrick and sandra. patrick is also going to shoot a wedding-related romantic comedy this summer and i believe sandra devotes her off-time to theater. the rest of the cast don't have any projects except for grey's.

this is turning out to be a big year for katie. the first quarter isn't even over yet and she already has a fragrance endorsement and a new movie! good for her. wink.gif

TVR
Definitely agree with you jahnnabanana - its turning into a great year - well in fact 2 years for Katie. I am so happy for her success.

I really hope Knocked Up lives up to the buzz - it is getting some amazing reviews - I am struggling to find any reviewer who anything bad to say about it. Hopefully it will do very well.

I am very interested to see who will be cast alongside Katie in 27 dresses - the chemistry between the leads is very important in a romantic comedy after all.

and who do you think will be able play her sister to make this premise remotely believable? katie is so gorgeous that i find it impossible to think that someone would choose her sister over her.

it might work if charlize theron plays the sister. the two look so much alike that it would make this plausible but i don't think an academy award winner will play second fiddle to anyone. smile.gif
TVR
You think they look alike? I really dont think so myself - both are beautiful of course but in very different ways.

It will be interesting to see who plays her sister definitely. I have yet to see any other casting information for the movie - anyone else spotted anything?

Little bit more about the movie from the director Anne Fletcher:

"Katherine is beautiful, so the fact that [her character] can't get a man is shocking! But it's not about her beauty; it's about what she thinks of herself."

From Hollywood Reporter:

'Dresses' impresses Fox 2000

By Nicole Sperling and Tatiana Siegel

April 2, 2007

Fox 2000 is signing on to produce Spyglass Entertainment's romantic comedy "27 Dresses." James Marsden and Malin Akerman have joined the Katherine Heigl topliner.

Anne Fletcher ("Step Up") is set to direct from a script by "The Devil Wears Prada" scribe Aline Brosh McKenna. "Dresses" centers on a young woman (Heigl) who has made a career out of being a bridesmaid but never a bride and faces her worst nightmare when her sister (Akerman) becomes engaged to the man of her dreams. Luckily, the wedding brings around the man (Marsden) who will change her bridesmaid status for good.

Production is set to begin in May in New York and Rhode Island.

Spyglass' Roger Birnbaum, Gary Barber and Jonathan Glickman will produce. Rodney Farrell is overseeing the production for Fox 2000.

Marsden, best known for his role as Cyclops in the "X-Men" films, next appears in New Line Cinema's "Hairspray," set to bow in the summer. He also will appear in Buena Vista's musical "Enchanted," set for an end-of-year bow. Marsden is repped by Endeavor and Brillstein-Grey Entertainment.

Akerman most recently appeared in New Line's 2004 comedy "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle." The budding actress will appear in Warner Bros. Pictures' "The Invasion" and Screen Gems' "Brothers Solomon," both set for release this year. She is repped by Endeavor and Sanders Armstrong Management.

Thanks for the update - good to see more people being added to the movie. I am not particularly familiar with either though I've seen Marsden in a few things.
Isabel Anne Evans
I died, and went to heaven eek.gif. They got James Marsden eek.gif. I love him, and what a major hottie hurray.gif. They forgot to mention he was also Richard White in "Superman Returns". Interesting he also co-starred with Patrick in "Enchanted" as well lol.

Wow, that was big summary eek.gif lol. I'm definitely interested in this scene:

But when Jane finds out that Kevin has actually been exploiting her as the subject of a highly embarrassing cover story, she decides that enough is enough, and she acts out in truly spectacular fashion -- at Tess's wedding rehearsal, no less.

I can totally seeing Katie nail that scene nod.gif.

Providence Journal

CUMBERLAND — Hollywood’s back in town.

A romantic comedy starring Katherine Heigl, of TV’s Grey’s Anatomy, will be filming in Dean Studios, a former warehouse in the Diamond Hill Industrial Park, according to owner Bradford A. Dean.

Construction crews began moving equipment into the 60,000-square-foot space yesterday. Set building is expected to start at the end of the week, said Dean’s son, Brad Dean Jr.

The film, 27 Dresses, takes place in New York City and stars Heigl as a woman who has been a bridesmaid 27 times, then falls in love with her sister’s fiancé just before the wedding.

The screenplay was written by Aline Brosh McKenna, who wrote last year’s hit comedy The Devil Wears Prada.

Dean Jr. said crews will be shooting interior apartment scenes in the studio and one of the first sets to be built will be the apartment’s bathroom.

“Apparently, there aren’t enough bathrooms in the state to accommodate an entire film crew,” Dean Jr. joked.

Filming will begin in locations around the state and New York between early next month and July 4, when Heigl must return to Grey’s Anatomy, according to Steve Feinberg, executive director of the state’s Film and TV Office.

The film is the first production to come to town since CBS pulled the plug on Waterfront, a drama about Rhode Island politics starring Joe Pantoliano and William Baldwin, in November.

That show’s producers converted the warehouse, at 70 Industrial Lane, into a soundstage and office when they signed an eight-month lease in July 2006.

After Waterfront cleared out, Dean Sr. announced his intention to continue offering the warehouse as a film studio.

The studio is a cornerstone in the state’s plan to develop homegrown businesses and talent catering to the film and television industry, Feinberg said.

It is one of the few indoor facilities in the state with the infrastructure to handle a full movie production, which can enlist up to 300 workers and require large amounts of electricity, according to Feinberg.

The Brotherhood, a Showtime TV drama about a Providence Irish clan, is to start shooting its second season in a warehouse in East Providence tomorrow, Feinberg said.

“It is really important that we have houses for these productions,” Feinberg said. “When producer Jonathan Glickman [of Spyglass Entertainment] approached me about this project, Dean Studios was one of the first places I mentioned because it offered a soundstage and office space.”

Dean purchased the warehouse, formerly owned by Alcoa Aluminum, in June 2006, and originally planned on relocating the corporate headquarters of his company, Dean Warehousing Services, there.

But with 27 Dresses locked in for at least five months and the possibility of another film to take its place in August, the Deans say they intend to keep the studio open as long as there is a demand.

Dean Jr. says that other project is Paramount Pictures’ The Fighter, a film about Massachusetts boxer “Irish” Mickey Ward. The film is to be directed by Darren Aronofsky and is to star Mark Wahlberg as Ward and Matt Damon as his brother, Dickie Eklund.

“It is something different for us,” Dean Sr. said. “There is an element of fun to the film studio. It’s a little diversion from the traditional warehousing business.”

This confuses me. I read somewhere that he is supposed to be playing the sister's fiance but I also read something about James Marsden playing the very same role. I'm thinking Burns plays the boss and Marsden plays the love interest, ready to help her 'pick up the pieces of her shattered heart' after the wedding. grin.gif Either way, I'm gonna be happy. smile.gif

Here is the previous summary Keith posted:
http://www.kheigl.com/news/april07/090407-1.shtml

QUOTE
In the movie Katherine plays the lead - Jane - a "compulsive bridesmaid" who longs to be the bride in her own dream wedding, but finds her hopes for happiness fading when her younger sister Tess snags George, Jane's boss and the man she adores from afar.

However, when Kevin, a funny and droll guy who happens to write the Vows column for the New York Times, enters Jane's life, he winds up falling hard for her, and vice versa. But when Jane finds out that Kevin has actually been exploiting her as the subject of a highly embarrassing cover story, she decides that enough is enough, and she acts out in truly spectacular fashion -- at Tess's wedding rehearsal, no less.

Due to how the casting news came about I thought it was:

Katie = Jane
James = George
Malin = Tess (hey another Tess lol.gif )
Kevin should be played by Burns

ETA: Though technically speaking due to the plotline Ed and James will be both playing love interests to Katie's Jane shrug.gif.
Living in Oblivion
You're right, Mel. Ed Burns does fit the Kevin role better but like I said before, I'll be happy either way. lol.gif

Just been reading comments from extras and people in and around the movie at IMDB - seems that they have shot a few scenes and filming has been under way for a few days. Yay smile.gif I guess it must be quite a tight schedule if Katie is due back on the Grey's set in July as reported.

Thanks, Keith! smile.gif
