star-telegram.com"BEDFORD — Eighth-graders in Sally Seil’s pre-Advanced Placement English class are big dreamers. So as a symbol of their aspirations, they decided to go out on the lawn of Harwood Junior High School and set off rockets.
"They represented hope for us," Seil said. "Hope and what we can achieve if we can keep trying."
The sky-soaring rockets were part of a six-week reading assignment for about 140 eighth-graders at Harwood. The students were inspired by the book October Sky, which tells the tale of a young man raised in a poor West Virginia coal-mining town in the late 1950s.
The young man’s father wants him to become a coal miner, but Sonny, the main character, insists on becoming a rocket scientist. On his own, Sonny learns calculus, physics and trigonometry. He uses his knowledge to build a rocket, compete in a national science fair and land a college scholarship.
Harwood students could relate to Sonny. They, too, want to achieve big things.
"Just the thought that he could do it makes me feel like I can do it, too," said eighth-grader Abby Eden, 13.
Taylor Avirett, 13, said she works hard at school because she wants to become a pastry chef and own her own shop. She also may even think of becoming a doctor, she said.
Isaac Ellsworth, also 13, says he wants to play in the NFL.
Sonny’s story "is about determination or perseverance," Ellsworth said. "I want to be a football player, so every day, I try my best to really be the best I can be."
And Melissa Given, 13, dreams of becoming a forensic scientist. She was a straight-A student until she moved to different schools twice in the same year. She knows she has to work hard to bring her grades back up.
But like Sonny, who faced huge obstacles, she knows she can do it, she said."
Seil’s class was assigned the book for summer reading. The rocket launches earned them extra credit, Seil said.
