The first time I spoke to James at the Grand Slam was in the autograph line. I had a limited edition photo of Spike that I had gotten from Himber Entertainment for him to sign. As he was signing it,I was telling him that I was glad to hear that he was going to be playing some blues songs for us at his concert. That I had just seen Tom Rush perform and that he was very good at the blues too. James said that he is being told that he has a "knack" for the "blues".
Afterwards,at the photo "op", we were allowed to give presents. I gave him a CD that I thought he would like. He l said he would listen to the it on the way home. Then he put his arm around my shoulder and pulled me in close for the photo. "Snap" and it was over.
The next day my daughter Meg came with me. We met up with 2 fans that had come all the way from Mexico to this. We had time to get sodas in the bar together. It was nice to meet after years of knowing red_sunflower from various boards.
The photo op on Sunday,James wore jeans,a white shirt, and a brown (leather? shiny vinyl? ) jacket. He looked so scrumptious! He left the shirt opened a bit...and yes, ladies, unlike "Spike", James does have chest hair. lol
At the Q&A's he did, I asked 3 questions. One was did he film the emotional scene that was in the book between his character and Hilary Swank's? He said that he had filmed it but the director came to him apologetically telling him it would be cut because it was too "stand alone" in terms of the movie. James understood but secretly feels if he acted it better it might have been left in...of course, the writer of the scene told him that he felt responsible....that if he had written it better...."
I said "Well,I've heard that you are in 9-10 scenes and that they are good."
I also.later asked if he was going to use a new accent for his guest star role on "Saving Grace" with Holly Hunter. He said he was. It takes place in Oklahoma so there is a slight western accent there.
He also mentioned that Holly Hunter told him that he was an amazing actor and that she's followed his career for years. He says he was blown away by that!
And finally,I asked him if he was offered the role of Thomas, the vampire on the Dresden Files would he take the role feeling that he could bring something new to it or feel he was being type-cast as a 'vampire"?
He said that if I had asked him that a year ago he would have said No to the part but now he feels he's done enough different things that he could do it and if it was well written he'd be happy to do it.

Thanks B hurray.gif sounds like you had fun and double hurray.gif that he might be willing to be Thomas grin.gif

I have to say I have wondered about the chest hair thing lol.gif I was trying to figure out why all the men in Hollywood are mostly hairless? lol.gif

How cool that Holly Hunter has followed his career grin.gif I just love how many actor types when asked what they like to watch or do and they say watch Buffy on DVDs. Two that stand out last year. Was the Idigo girls saying in an interview they loved to watch on their tour buss and then Will Smith saying he was watching in his family.

I was trying to get some of my horsie friends intot he show and it's so hard sad.gif One person I had been loaning the DVDs forever finally watched and she was calling frantic every week begging for more. People STILL don't understand the imprt of Jossverses sad.gif

The shows must have had something when I still Tivo them and am unable to delete them until I've gotten around to watching them (even tho I have them all on DVD ) . If I'm really rushed I have been known to fast forward to just James scenes...that saves a lot of time. It's incredible what an impact he has on the show when he actually has very little time in each episode. nod.gif
Vinity
I will occasionally rewatch an entire ep but I also tend to watch the James heavy eps or just his parts more. lol.gif especially seasons 5-7

I have them all on DVD, and a second pimp set of season 1 and 2. I was TiVo eps for a while so I could DVD copy to try and use as pimp sets but I gave it up.

Farscape is my worst like that. I have the whole series in the original DVD sets, then the starburst editions cause they added a bunch of new commentary, plus a couple of R2 from UK. I have Pimp sets of VCDs to loan out. lol.gif and VSH tapes somewhere also. lol.gif I thought about getting the Aussie release cause more commentary eek.gif but now I hear someone else has bought the rights to the DVDs now that whats-it's-face rights have run out. I'll but ANOTHER set if it has even more commentary. Everyone is light on season 4 extras sad.gif

B~ I was reading an article on James Q&A at the con. He was referring to a discussion about not being able to lick SMG the day before? WHAT/huh? After all those scenes season 6 and he couldn't lick her? confused.gif lol.gif
Berengaria
Yes,he seemed to think that there was something sexual about licking her...and he thinks of her as a kid sister and it was just squicking him out. He said that she made the comment to him that he could try to rape her but he couldn't lick her?? And he replied "That isn't helping!"

He's so sensitive and emotional...and always strongly opinionated. nod.gif

But hey,lookee here:

I just noticed that I am in this picture! (jeans, print top, blonde hair)
Vinity
Yeah, grin.gif I saw that before and thought it was you grin.gif cool.gif

That' so funny about the licking lmao.gif what a strange man.

I liked that someone said later you had asked their question about Thomas, but she said Jim had Spike in mind when he wrote that part confused.gif what/huh? Thomas is very different than Spike, looks different and acts much different. Certainly I can see James physically doing the part, with dark hair, his body and icubus vibes but I don't see Thomas as looking or acting like Spike?
Berengaria
It was strange to think of him being uncomfortable with licking blood. It wasn't played as a sexy scene at all and he has never expressed any reluctance to "bite" victims.

My opinion: I don't think Jim Butcher directly patterned Thomas on Spike so much as when he thought of making an extremely attractive vampire with a lot of layers,he was aware of the Spike character and mindful of wanting something like that to play with (well, who doesn't?? ) lol.gif

But that is what is so exciting to me about seeing James tackle that role, that it is a very DIFFERENT vampire...not just a "Spike-lite" .

from Dreramwatch:

His Marsters voice

With rumours abounding that Buffy star James Marsters' next appearance will be in Brit hit Torchwood, here's a look at what he had to say when we caught up with him at Creation’s Grand Slam convention in April. Words: Abbie Bernstein

James Marsters is a popular figure on the convention circuit, and it's not hard to see why. Not only does he make fans feel welcome at two Q&A sessions over the Grand Slam weekend in Burbank, California, he also performs a 25-song concert, made up almost entirely of his own compositions.

"It's the most beautiful thing when people sing along," he tells his appreciative audience. Though he's mostly uncomfortable discussing what his songs are about, he says that when people relate to the words enough to join in, he doesn't "feel so alone".

That singing feeling

Given this passion for music, it's unsurprising that Marsters cites musical extravaganza Once More, With Feeling as his favourite episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (in which he played Spike for six years). "Even though we all thought it would be the biggest train wreck!" he laughs.

"Anthony Stewart Head and I were comfortable doing it, because we were both singers, but the first four days were so tense! People were thinking, 'We're all gonna die,' but everybody committed, and I love them all a little more for that."

At the end of Marsters' big number in that episode, Spike is seen leaping onto a coffin, but he admits that, while he can sing, he wasn't responsible for the accompanying gymnastics. "That was my stunt double, Steve Tartalia," he says. "He came to us straight out of Hong Kong, and doesn't know the meaning of the word 'safety'. He was a godsend"

One scene that Marsters did perform, however, and which he still finds disturbing, comes from the episode Seeing Red, where Spike attempts to rape Buffy. "That was the lowest part of my acting career," he says. "I hate rape scenes. That scene sent me to therapy. Sometimes, when they write this stuff, they don’t understand what it’s like to perform it."

Once more, with soul

After Buffy came to an end in 2003, Marsters reprised the role of Spike in spin-off series Angel. He says he was happy to resurrect the character, "because I wanted to explore what he was like when he had a soul." He adds that working with David Boreanaz was great, "As was the continuing paycheck!"

As to whether Marsters would be willing to don fangs once more in the future, he says, “I have done enough other roles since then that I feel I could probably go back and play a vampire again."

Those other roles include work on two new feature films, horror-thriller Shadow Puppets and romantic drama PS, I Love You. On Shadow Puppets, he worked with Tony 'Candyman' Todd, whom he describes as, "A great guy. A huge guy. You sense that he’s had a lot to be angry about in his life, but he’s always very even-tempered.” Of PS, I Love You, he says simply, "I fell a little in love with Kathy Bates!"

As well as the Oscar-winning Bates, Marsters has recently worked alongside another Academy Award winner, Holly Hunter, on supernatural cop show Saving Grace, which premieres in the US next month. "Holly freaked me out by saying she'd been following my career for years," he laughs.

Doing Fine now

Other well-liked co-stars include Michael Rosenbaum and Tom Welling, against whom Marsters was pitted in season five of Smallville, as Professor Milton Fine/Brainiac. "It’s gold when you find somebody who’s as active as Michael," Marsters says. "If you work with him, you’d better be prepared to get your game on." Welling, he adds, is "fantastic and very smart."

Marsters has also just recorded an audiobook of Jim Butcher's Summer Knight, the fourth book in the Dresden Files series. Marsters performs all the roles, and says he particularly enjoys reading Bob, the talking skull, because he’s "such a jerk!" With so many genre strings to his bow, and at least one other, secret project in the pipeline, it's fortunate that Marsters is still so keen to engage with his fans.

"Are you kidding?" he laughs, when asked if he ever tires of the attention. "This is the fantasy that actors hope for!" Besides, he’s been on the other side of the mic himself. “I used to go to Star Trek conventions with ears on, so this is delicious! Get thy freak on!"
Vinity
Get thy freak on!

We need a t-shirt lol.gif

The only personalized autograph I ever got from him says "Let your freak flag fly!"
