State of Mind

State Of Mind premiered on LIF on July 15, 2007. This series follows Dr. Ann Bellows, who finds her life at a crossroads after she catches her husband, a fellow psychiatrist, having sex with their own couple?s counselor. As her personal life unravels, Ann attempts to continue on with both her personal and professional lives. In the process, she is comforted by her eccentric and unpredictable therapist colleagues at New Haven Psychiatrist Associates, a rambling Victorian house-turned-office. When a young, sheepish lawyer moves into the office vacated by Ann?s philandering husband, he must adjust to life surrounded by therapists. For better or worse, the whole office participates as Ann adjusts to her new state of mind.

I saw on the computer last night that one of Devon's buddies Jeremy Sisco is joining Law and Order this season. I really wish they would figure a way to put those two shorts Devon directed that Jeremy were in.

Found a picture of Devon from State of Mind. I still chuckle every time I think of his character's name - Barry White. Suddenly I start humming "Love is in the air" lol.gif

Thank you for bringing those over Honey-Girl. He really has grown into a gorgeous guy from those days of the big hair geeky guy on My So Call Life.

Has anyone else seen the commercials for State of Mind? It looks like it's going to be a lot of fun. I think Devon might end up as a love interest for Lily's character.

Devon Gummersall
A July 2007 Interview
With "My So-Called Life," "Felicity" and "Roswell" under his belt, it's time for the actor to settle down with another good series. Lifetime should be his new home.

The written word is the most powerful tool on this planet. It starts wars and ends them. It can cause love to flourish or end a romantic relationship. I write screenplays because I love words. None of the scripts have been sold yet, but that's not what's important to me. What is important is the joy I get from creating characters and events. That creative process fuels my think tank. It also is the reason I asked to speak with Devon Gummersall about his new Lifetime series, "State of Mind." Short films and plays the 28-year-old actor has written or directed in film form have attracted established stars like Jeremy Sisto, Tony Shalhoub, Majandra Delfino and Billy Burke. Devon is light-years ahead of me. The chance to learn from him was the major bonus I got from this interview assignment.

Lifetime has a real winner in "State of Mind." The new series will premiere on the popular cable network on Sunday, July 15 at 9pm. It centers around the daily struggles of the therapists at New Haven Psychiatric Associates who often have more problems than the people they help. The fabulous Lili Taylor headlines the series in the role of Dr. Anne Bellowes, a woman who loses her fellow therapist husband (Chris Diamantopoulos) to the woman who serves as their marriage counselor. His departure from the firm will cause a budget crunch for the other partners unless a replacement can be found to help pay the rent.

Enter the young lawyer Barry White (Devon Gummersall). New to the area, White needs a place to begin his practice. He also has to cope with having a name associated with a great R&B singer. Derek Riddell, Mido Hamada, Kevin Chamberlin, and Lolita Davidovich star as the other therapists who find themselves trapped with a barrister in their midst. Of course, when you're dealing with emotionally strained patients, a good attorney can be a handy person to have around. On the down side, White's dad is an extremely dangerous man who is tied to the mob and has many cohorts who will always need legal help. They might even be able to enhance their lives by talking with some of the therapists in the building. You should be there when that day comes.

The Devon Gummersall Interview with Tony Bray

I liked the screener for your new series. How many episodes are you doing this summer?

It's just going to be for two months this summer. It's going to air eight episodes starting on July 15th and ending sometime in the middle of September.
And there will be a renewal maybe?
We will basically see how it all goes. I would imagine sometime before the end of the summer they will let us know. If it is to be renewed, we will come back sometime early next year and start filming again. The reason that it's airing only for two months is because they wanted to make sure that we aired it in the summer. Lifetime has three shows that are all going to be on Sunday night. They are all kind of summer shows.
Tell me more about Barry White's dad being a killer. What was that line in reference to?
It was sort of a hint at some things to come. Barry comes from a family with kind of a dubious background. His father is basically tied into the Mafia and some other pretty dark things, a long list of things. We haven't really defined it that clearly yet. I think we will get to that later in the season.
It is a clue as to where Barry is coming from and what he is about. He is a guy who grew up in a situation where his father was at the very least ... vicious. Barry may not have seen stuff directly, but he definitely knew that there was something dark going on, that there was some criminal activity and violence. I think that is part of the reason why Barry went into a career as a lawyer ... to go into an opposition direction as the family.

Barry ought to have his dad go in and talk to one of the shrinks.
Exactly, that is very true. Barry could do a little couch time himself, I'm sure.
I've seen you in a lot of things especially "Roswell." This is the first role I've seen you in that I think of you as an adult. You are very strong in the scene that found one of the shrinks being abused by the cops.
I'm glad you thought so. I'm real excited about playing this role because of that. I think that Barry has an innocence to him, but he has the ability to take matters into his own hands. I think he's one of those guys who is a very nice guy. He is kind of a polite guy, but when the chips are down, he's definitely capable of doing what needs to be done.
You definitely get that when you throw Dr. Le Croix against the wall when you think he can me a child abuser.
Barry had made a point of living his life a certain way. He has composed himself to higher standards of behavior and morals. He has a strong sense of what is right and wrong.
You made it clear Barry would not someone who was messing with a kid?
Barry has to deal with his strong sense of right and wrong, but also has to decide when to compromise. I think being a lawyer and dealing with the law is such a complicated issue. There is going to be times when Barry has to compromise, it's going to be really difficult. Hopefully, Barry can find a way to maintain his values, even though working in this career makes it difficult to keep ones integrity and also be successful. That will be his challenge.
I am fascinated by the fact that you've written and directed your own short films with people like Tony Shalhoub, Jeremy Sisco and others. That tells me that down the road, you might be writing and directing more than acting.
I am definitely passionate about the other side of the business. I love writing. It has definitely become something I am equally interested in, but it will never replace acting. It is a different kind of experience. Directing is a separate side from acting too. I really don't know how other people write, direct and act all at the same time. I find that to be pretty remarkable. I don't know how you can wear that many hats at once.
I especially like your plot for "Robbing Hef." You ought to turn that into a full film.
I like it too. I wrote it as one act play. I still would like to do that, put it up on a stage somewhere at some point. I have a lot of good friends who are actors. I've been lucky to sort of be around a lot of talented people who are willing to do me a favor. If you write a script that is interesting and has good characters and that is well executed, actors tend to be pretty generous that way ... to get involved. They like to play characters that are interesting.
I've been lucky. I've written three screen plays and had one producer try to buy one. I wouldn't sell to him. He was in Canada and wanted to re-make it into an Austrian film. I wrote it with America characters and a film franchise in mind, preferably something that could be filmed in my state, North Carolina.
You have to follow your instincts. When your guts are telling you that it's the wrong move, you don't want to just give something to someone else and kind of lose control. That is the scary thing about writing. You create something, put all that work into it. If it goes the wrong direction and if someone doesn't understand the project, they end up taking it over. That would be frustrating.
The characters become your family. Your mind creates them and their situations. You put the words in their mouths. They really do become like your children.
Absolutely. People who have never written anything wouldn't understand that, I think. You definitely put so much of yourself into it that it is very scary to give that up ... to give it to someone else. It definitely has to feel that it is the right situation.
I've done that. I've written stuff where someone got involved and I had to pull back because it wasn't going in a direction that I liked. It wasn't what I had tried to envision in the world of what I created. That is why it is a natural thing to try and direct things yourself. That way you'll able to see it through to the end and have more control over the vision. Definitely, film making is hard. There is going to be some compromise. You're going to lose control no matter what, but it has to be the right person and the right situation.

You're 28 and been acting for eighteen years, At ten, I couldn't even zip myself. How did you get to acting so early?
I was raised in a household that was very creative. My father is an abstract artist. I was always encouraged to do something artistic. My mom and dad took it seriously when I expressed interest in acting. To them, they were sort of the opposite of what most parents would probably think. They were excited about me going to acting. They thought it was a good idea. My dad moved to Los Angeles for his career as an artist when I was ten. If I hadn't been living here, I wouldn't have started that early, but since we were here, it was a fairly natural progression.
A friend who was on a TV show referred me to an agent. I auditioned for them and they took me on. I didn't really start doing it in a real capacity until I was about fourteen. That was when it really became something I wanted to do for life basically. I knew that was what I wanted to do at that age. When I was younger than that, it was sort of fun and I enjoyed it.

Considering the rejection factor, you must have been emotionally strong at that age.
It's a strange way to spend your time after school. Even in my early teens, I was kind of bored with school and wanted something else. The idea of just going to school and hanging out with my friends on the weekends was fine, but I guess I always wanted more excitement, more stuff to do.
I would life to close this with a Lili question. I have been a huge Lili Taylor fan since clouds were invented. How are your scenes with her? Is she a traditional actress or does she have her own technique?
I've been a huge fan of Lili's for a long time too. She's a big part of why I decided to be on this show and why I continue to be. I'm just thrilled to be working with her. She is very passionate about her work and her role and about her projects. She's very hard working and always present on the set. She's a great person. As an actor, she is very giving and generous. She is very prepared, very focused and definitely great to work with. I think this role fits her very well. It comes naturally to her. She is very focused and very thoughtful in her work.
I think it's really fun to see Lili in this role. She has had so many interesting projects and so many interesting roles. She brings such great quality to the part. I think she is one of the most authentic actresses that we have. She is so natural. She is definitely someone who puts a lot of energy and thought into it. She is very focused.

I hope this series gets more than eight episodes. I really enjoyed what I saw.
I'm so glad to hear it. I am so passionate about this show. I am really excited about it. It is very rare to watch an hour show and feel like there is so much going on. The writing is so intelligent. As I've tried to be a writer myself now, I've learned more about the art. It makes me appreciate it even more.
Does the writer in you take over when you first get a script or do you see it as the actor?
In this case, since I'm acting, I see it more as an actor. I definitely appreciate it as a writer. I think this show is going to be one of those shows that gets better as it goes on. These characters are so well drawn. They are three dimensional.
Thanks for all your time today. You made my job easy.
Thank you. I'm glad you like the show.

End of the Devon Gummersall Interview

I opened this article be writing about the importance of words and Devon's ability to pen quality scripts. I'm not the only person who thinks that. Producers Marshall Herskovitz ("thirtysomething") and Edward Zwick ("Blood Diamond") recently hired him to work with them on a new show, not as an actor, but as a writer. It's a job this interviewer would love to have.

Visit the Lifetime web site for more information about the network's new drama series "State of Mind." Be sure to watch the trailer while there. Remember, the show premieres on Sunday, July 15 at 9pm.

I'm not sure about this new writing job, on the Lifetime official site they say that Devon is a writer for Quarterlife but I was under the impression this was a movie but maybe it's a tv show. Either way that's is such awesome news for Devon.

That is awesome news for Devon. He is one talented man! nod.gif

Thanks for bringing this over Val!

Here's a nice little blurb about the show and Devon.

QUOTE
In "State of Mind," Ann is having a terrible time concentrating on her patients, who pick at her furniture or bicker tiresomely. Wild fantasies distract her briefly.

She finds an important ally in a young lawyer named Barry White. That the character is played by Devon Gummersall, who is white and naive, becomes a good running joke. Gummersall, who gained prominence on "My So-Called Life," has matured into a capable leading man. He is appealing as a sweet, straight-arrow hero who hints at a murky family history.

No. 9: "State of Mind" (starts July 15, Lifetime)
I know what you're thinking: "Lifetime? As in the Original Pictures about victimized women?" But now that I've been pleasantly surprised by the compelling "Army Wives," Lifetime has earned a little more credibility in my eyes. And now this series about a psychotherapist with personal problems of her own has at least three good things going for it: 1) Lili Taylor (right), who always delivers the right combo of charm and angst; 2) the producing team that brought us "Nip/Tuck" and "The Closer"; and 3) Devon Gummersall, aka Brian Krackow from "My So-Called Life." Yeah, I'm so there.

Thank you Keri. Here's the review from Variety.

State of Mind
(Series -- Lifetime, Sun. July 15, 9 p.m.)
By LAURA FRIES
Lili Taylor stars as Dr. Ann Bellowes in Lifetime's 'State of Mind.' The drama is from the producers of 'The Closer' and 'Nip/Tuck.'

Filmed in Los Angeles by Shephard/Robin Prods. in association with Warner Horizon Television for Lifetime Television. Executive producers, Greer Shephard, Michael M. Robin; producer, Ronald D. Chong; co-executive producer, Amy Bloom; director, Michael M. Robin, writer, Amy Bloom.

Dr. Ann Bellowes - Lili Taylor
Dr. James LeCroix - Derek Riddell
Dr. Taj Kalid - Mido Hamada
Dr. Cordelia Banks - Theresa Randle
Barry White - Devon Gummersall
Fred Smedresman - Kevin Chamberlin

A juicy drama from the executive producers of "The Closer" and "Nip/Tuck," "State of Mind" is a smart and edgy series featuring a fresh and talented cast, solid writing, good music and a great premise. With all the swearing and sex, viewers will think they're watching FX instead of Lifetime.
Lili Taylor, usually known for playing quirky characters, is surrounded by them here as she plays Dr. Ann Bellowes, a successful family therapist who shares a practice -- as well as a good deal of personal problems -- with her associates in an old Victorian house in New Haven, Conn.

Her friend and confidant, Dr. Cordelia Banks (Theresa Randle), specializes in families and adolescents, if not tact, while Dr. Taj Kalid (Mido Hamada), Cordelia's secret married lover, is an insufferable intellectual who is forgoes the touchy feely stuff in favor of psychopharmacology.

Dr. James LeCroix (Derek Riddell), a soccer enthusiast with a heavy Scottish brogue, is the resident maverick and child psychologist whose focus is problem cases while Fred (Kevin Chamberlin) is the socially awkward office manager who keeps them all in order.

Ann needs all the help her colleagues can muster when she finds her husband and fellow psychiatrist in a compromising position with their marriage counselor. Things only get worse when she accidentally hits him with her car -- hurting his ego more than his body -- and then has to find a replacement tenant for his soon to be vacant office in her building.

She serendipitously finds a new tenant -- as well as her divorce lawyer -- in the young, idealist Barry White (Devon Gummersall), whose compulsion to do the right thing, a rebellion against his corrupt parents, makes for a refreshing addition to the eclectic group.

Ann's recent troubles, although emotionally devastating, offer a series of personal breakthroughs and, ironically, make her a better, albeit unconventional therapist. Her emotional state has left her with strange fantasies of strangling clients and visions of her philandering husband offering advice to troubled couples, but it's her impassioned speeches that save the day.

Characters here are given to grandiose pontification and the tactic makes it seem as if all it takes is one good lecture to overcome major life crises. As they're well written and eloquently delivered, the device tends to work.

Created and written by best-selling author and practicing psychotherapist Amy Bloom, the show is a strong pilot for any channel. Debut seg features several guest stars in small put memorable parts, particularly Sheryl Lee and Michael O'Keefe as a couple with unrealistic expectations for their adopted Russian son.

It should prove interesting to watch as the characters develop, especial Dr. Kalid, who at this point offers little to like, while Cordelia loses a great deal of professional credibility for her head-scratching indiscretions and use of the word retard. Tough and assertive isn't synonymous with classless.

While the fantasy episodes tend to work, the dream sequence does not -- it smacks a little too much of Psych 101. Still, any show that uses a puppet to quote Henry James deserves bonus points.

Ok, hold your hat PQ but I actually learned how to do screencaps jawdrop.gif. So if Lifetime puts this on iTunes (which I'm sure they will) I can buy it and do the screencaps. I actually have been doing this for Jericho.

The only thing is I won't get as many as you do(it's all manual, I know you use a program but I'm playing the show, pausing, copy & pasting) and I don't have one of those accounts where you can share photos. Could you give me a link to a photo share program that I could create an account.

Actually if you wouldn't mind doing it too as a back up incase I mess up that would probable be a good thing.

My So-called Life Geek Reveals a New State of Mind
by Angel Cohn

Devon Gummersall, State of Mind
Most people remember Devon Gummersall from his days as Angela Chase's geeky but sweet neighbor on the cult series My So-called Life, but now the actor has grown up and is portraying a lawyer on the new Lifetime drama State of Mind (premiering Sunday at 9 pm/ET). He's still the young, fresh face on the show, and he's surrounded by another great cast, including indie queen Lili Taylor. Could his humorously named lawyer Barry White have some feelings for the lovely Lili? TVGuide.com couldn't wait to find out.
TVGuide.com: I just watched your show, and it’s so cute!
Devon Gummersall: Oh good, I’m glad you liked it. I had worked with the producers, Michael Robin and Greer Shephard, separately, earlier in my career. I had been fond of them and really had a great experience working with them in the past, so when I heard about this, I was really excited to look at it. I felt like the idea of exploring the lives and quirks of therapists was interesting, and I liked that my character was kind of this "odd man out" in an office full of therapists.

TVGuide.com: Plus, the show has a great cast. Including you, of course.
Gummersall: It really does. I’ve been in this business for quite a while now, and these kinds of situations come along very rarely. It’s such a great situation when you have six actors who are all so talented and so passionate about the project. All these people in the show — Lili Taylor and Derek Riddell and Mido Hamada and Kevin Chamberlin and Theresa Randle — are a pleasure to work with, and I think they’re all such interesting actors.

TVGuide.com: How many episodes of State of Mind will there be?
Gummersall: It’s gonna be a total of eight episodes the first season. Hopefully it’ll be a little bit of a different pace, something new for people to watch in the summer.

TVGuide.com: How many Barry White jokes can we expect in these eight episodes?
Gummersall: You know what? So far, surprisingly few. Which I kind of love. I love that everyone just sort of accepts that that’s his name.

TVGuide.com: They all give him a look, though, when he's introduced in the first episode.
Gummersall: It’s definitely subtle, though. It registers and people are like, “Huh, that’s kind of bizarre,” but I love that they don’t overplay it. It’s kind of like that Michael Bolton thing in Office Space, you know?

TVGuide.com: Exactly. So what’s it like being the young guy on the show?
Gummersall: It’s really fun for me to be playing a role that is a little bit more in the sort of professional, adult arena. It takes a long time to make the transition from playing high school and college and post-college to playing someone who goes to the office every day in a suit and tie. That’s a new thing for me as an actor, and it’s really exciting to be part of that.

TVGuide.com: You seem to have avoided the normal teen actor path.
Gummersall: Absolutely, and you know what, I have made a concerted effort to sort of stay away from anything that felt trite or inauthentic. I’ve enjoyed doing a lot of independent movies that have been really good experiences, even if they haven’t really been seen very much by the general public. I’ve found that that’s been a great way to explore things and grow creatively.

TVGuide.com: I've actually seen a bunch of the stuff that you’ve done, but I have to say that when this interview request came through, I was like, “Brian Krakow!” Do you get that a lot still?
Gummersall: Yeah, absolutely, and it never gets old. I never get tired of talking about it or anything, because My So-called Life was such a great experience on all levels, and such a special show. And look, those episodes, they still hold up. You watch them today and they’re still just as impressive as they were back then. The writing is so fantastic. I think the fact that Winnie Holzman went on to write Wicked really shows how talented and versatile she is. I am such a huge, huge fan of My So-called Life, and I never get sick of talking about it.

TVGuide.com: Whenever somebody’s like, “What were your five favorite TV shows?” My So-called Life always comes up.
Gummersall: It’s gotta be up there, I agree. I’m glad you feel that way, too.

TVGuide.com: Well, I’ll be glad to see you now that, you know, you're grown up.
Gummersall: That was the thing about My So-called Life: It did take a long time to get people to see me in a different light, just because that character was so well drawn. But I was joking about my manager with that — we made such an effort to sort of play different kinds of roles and explore darker characters that I was going to be typecast now as the bad guy! But I’ve come full circle now, so I’m back to something in the middle.

TVGuide.com: Barry White is a sweet sort of guy.
Gummersall: He's an interesting character, I have to say, because he’s very innocent and he has a very optimistic idea of his career and of what being a lawyer means. He has this kind of dark past and this sort of edge to him, and that to me was what made the character very exciting.

TVGuide.com: I gotta know, though — does he have a little crush on Anne (Lili Taylor)?
Gummersall: I don’t know, I think it’s possible that that could be explored at some point, but as of yet, I don’t know if I can answer that.

TVGuide.com: Hmm... interesting.
Gummersall: No, I mean I don’t know if I can answer in the sense that I don’t think I know the answer. There’s definitely a connection there, but who knows where it’s going to lead. Every week when we get a new script, it’s always a bit of a mystery.

TVGuide.com: I do have to say that you have, um, much better hair now.
Gummersall: Listen, I agree. I think that as influential as my hairstyle was, it was time to retire it, it definitely was. How I came to have that hair, I really don’t know. But, hey, it was fun while it lasted. Somebody asked me, “What would you have liked to have seen happen for Brian Krakow if the show had continued?” I said, “Haircut. That’s it.” I mean, the poor guy. High school’s hard enough without every day being a bad hair day.

TVGuide.com: Have you had to learn a ton of legal jargon for State of Mind?
Gummersall: I’ve definitely done some research and I’ve read some books about it, but so far it hasn’t been too much. My character is sort of starting out as a lawyer, so most of his initial cases are DUIs and people trying to get out of speeding [tickets]... simple stuff. But I think as it goes on, it’ll get more complicated. He can’t be choosy about who he represents, so he's dealing with these petty criminals and whatnot, and my clients are in the same waiting room as the therapy patients, so that’s kind of funny.

TVGuide.com: Maybe you could work on some sort of cross-deal, where you’re like, "Now go to therapy to find out why you’re committing these crimes!"
Gummersall: Yeah, “What makes you think that you needed that Blazer so bad that you’d go to jail for it?” That’s a good idea, I like that.

Thanks PQ and thank you for doing Reeker(I still need to get that one). No rush...school definitely comes first. I'll have to check out photobucket then. Thanks for the interview Keri.

So who watched the show? I thought Devon was adorable and I like the other guy but I think the other characters will need to grow on me.

YW - I plan on doing all of this in the morning so sometime midday tomorrow (less I wake up late) wink.gif - Reeker was on Satellite the other night that's the only reason I saw it lol.gif

Is it me? Or did the show seem a bit well . . . flat? Maybe it needs to grow on me.

Hopefully someone puts it online for me to stream it from.
Thanks for the interview Keri! smile.gif

wave.gif PQ! I miss 'chatting' with you sweetie...

I saw it! I thought it was pretty good. Devon was adorable and I see potential for Barry with Anne. It will be cute to see their progression.

The pilot didn't blow me away, but neither did the pilot of Army Wives, and now I really like it. I saw enough potential to add it to my TiVo season pass. smile.gif

wave.gif I should PM you, crazy, crazy, insanity is keeping me busy. It was, in certain parts, IMO, I am interested to see where it goes.

Reeker was on again last night, my dad watched and he turned it off in the middle claiming I was insane for watching it look.gif

The clips to do screencaps are on my computer, just need for things to calm down today (rough chance)
Vallygirl
Don't worry about it PQ, whenever you have time.

sad.gif iTunes doesn't have the new Lifetime shows available for download. I'll check again tonight but I don't think they will put them up for a while. So whenever you have time would you mind doing SoM too?

I also have to agree the show was flat. I really didn't like the other female in the office or the guy who wanted her to rent the ex's space two seconds after her marriage fell apart. I'm also not crazy about the office manager. I do like Lily Taylor's charactor, Devon's and they Derick's.
Pixie Queen
Val, I was planning on doing them both wink.gif

thank you so much PQ hug.gif

Guys, sorry. Having laptop issues now have even more homework. Won't get around to it till after Vegas

July 20, 2007

Devon Gummersall, currently appearing in the Lifetime original series State of Mind, has had a long career for an actor who hasn't even turned 30. Fans may remember him as nerdy Brian Krakow on My So-Called Life or as bad boy Sean De Luca on Roswell. Now appearing in more adult roles, Gummersall spoke to BuddyTV about his newest show, his guest role on the sixth season of 24 and his love of HBO.

Below you will find a written transcript of the interview as well as the full mp3 audio/

Hi, this is John from Buddy TV, and today we're talking with actor Devon Gummersall from the new Lifetime original series State of Mind. Hello Devon!

Hey, how're you doing?

I'm doing okay, how are you?

I'm excellent.

Outstanding. Why don't you start by telling our readers a little bit about your new show?

Well, it's a show that is created by novelist and therapist Amy Bloom, and I think this is the first show about therapists that's actually written by a therapist. So it has a level of authenticity in it, I think, a new kind of insight into what it's like to be a therapist, and yeah, what it's about. It's kind of a lighthearted, sort of comedic, but also has dark moments drama.

And what was it that first attracted you to this show?

Well you know, the writing was just really great. And you know, as an actor it's been said before, but it definitely can't be overstated how important the writing is, and how rare it is to find writing on this level - it's just that good. I just loved the script and then I also really loved the character of Barry White. I love the idea that I'm this lawyer who's kind of stuck for better or for worse in this small office building with a bunch of therapists, and I thought that was an interesting premise. And it's definitely proved to be fun and to be an interesting sort of setting for a lot of different stories.

You mentioned your character named Barry White, how do you think your character will stack up against the actual Barry White

I think it's pretty tough. I think I'd be, my character would be no match for the great Barry White. But you know, it's funny to play a character who has a name that has a little bit of burden, in the sense that you get made fun of all the time.

Now I actually watched the premiere, and I would say it was very, it was an interesting show. It was definitely a different kind of show than I was even expecting going into it. And the thing I'm amazed at is when I saw you on the screen, I thought, ‘This cannot possibly be the same actor from My So-Called Life all those years back.'

Yeah, well, you know it's been a long time. And definitely, you know, I've changed a lot mentally and physically and in all ways. It's exciting to be playing an adult role and a role that is, you know, just about a person who is making his way in the world and sort of starting out as a lawyer.

You know, it really takes a long time to make the transition from playing teenage roles, then to college roles. Then after college is sort of a strange period where, you know, it's kind of an in-between stage. Where you're not quite a young professional age yet, but you're also just kind of out of college, and just sort of in that in-between zone. So it kind of takes a while, you know. It's a tough transition to make as an actor, but you know I'm happy with the way things have gone, and I'm really excited to sort of start a new chapter in my career with this role. You know, just being really truly the first time I've played a young professional. Someone who goes to the office in a suit and tie, and that whole thing is new to me as an actor. I'm really finding it to be an interesting new chapter, and like I said, it's difficult to get to that stage, because there's just a lot of different little stages there as you grow up on camera and all that. But like I said, I'm pretty happy with how it's gone so far.

Yeah, I would definitely have to agree. You've done a very good job, a lot of new actors would probably get lost in that shuffle and don't make that transition very well. But throughout your career you've been on a lot of very popular shows, a lot of roles that evolved, and one of them I'd like to talk about is, it's a popular show. You were actually on the show 24, and I was wondering what was the experience getting roughed up by Jack Bauer like?

Yeah, it was a great experience. You know, 24 is one of my favorite shows, and so getting to be on it was very exciting. Yeah, it's definitely an intense project and it's an intense set, and working with Kiefer [Sutherland] is great. He's very much in-character and he's definitely an intimidating guy, just like Jack is. So it's easy, you know.

Yeah, and I was just wondering, 'cause if people don't remember your episode, it was just one of the most, kind of, one of the more controversial last season. Where your character was helping the terrorists and your brother was developmentally disabled. I'm just wondering, when you first read the script, did you think that this was a different kind of episode of 24?

Yeah, I did. I thought that it was a little bit outside of their norms, and I like this sort of darkness with this character. Where he was, you know, my character was helping the terrorists, but in a way he kind of was just a normal guy who was in over his head, and was, you know, trying to find a way to sort of support his brother, and just, you know, things had gotten out of hand. And you know, obviously he was a bad guy in that, but he also had another spot to him where you kind of, you sort of felt sorry for him to some degree. So I thought that was kind of an interesting character, because it had a lot of different layers going on, but yeah, it was… I thought it was interesting.

And actually, it's funny with 24. You know, things change so quickly that when you first read it, by the time you get to the set a lot of times things have kind of flipped around and changed a lot, and that's always kind of interesting too. I mean in my case, the character in this episode, my character in the initial script was the one who went outside and sort of helped Jack get to Gredenko, you know, the Russian terrorists. And then in the end version it ended up being my brother went out there, so kind of a different spin on it.

But I liked the way they took it to that level, made it kind of even more interesting that it was the brother who got put in harm's way instead of my character, who's actually the one who was responsible. Kind of made it a very difficult situation, but yeah, it was great experience working on it. And Kiefer is, you know, he's a great actor. He's very intense and very passionate about the project, which I think is impressive. He's been doing it for a long time, but he's still 100% committed and prepared and just passionate about it

Other than 24, I guess, are there any other current TV shows that you would love to get a role on?

Man, I'm thinking my new favorite television show is Flight of the Conchords. I just love that show, I think it's just so brilliant and funny. I love the musical numbers and stuff and the, like, cheesy bits, sort of music videos. I would love to be on that show. I'm also a big fan of Big Love, I think that's a great show. But I don't know exactly where I would fit into that, but you know, that's definitely one of my favorites. And then Curb Your Enthusiasm, it's also pretty special.

So you're an HBO fan, I take it?

Definitely an HBO fan, yeah. As far as network stuff I like, 24 is one of my favorites and I was really happy to be on that. But yeah, I think my number one favorite right now would be Flight of the Conchords.

And then my final question is just, do you have any upcoming film or other TV projects after State of Mind?

Yeah, there's two things I'm working on. One is an independent movie called Broken Windows that I'm really excited about, and I think it should be done probably in the next couple of months, and they'll be submitting it to festivals, and hopefully we'll be in one of the good ones, you know, we're just hoping for one of the big ones. But I'm excited about that. It's an ensemble piece, and it's just a really good character-driven drama that's from a first-time filmmaker named Tony Hickman. That was a great experience, I'm excited about that.

I'm also working as a writer on a show called Quarterlife which is going to be coming out sometime in the fall, and they haven't really announced the details yet, but its gonna be coming out sometime in the fall, and it's from Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz, whom I have worked with a lot throughout my career. They're from My So-Called Life and Thirtysomething and Once and Again. So I'm actually working on that not as an actor but as a writer, so that's been really exciting as well. And there'll be more details to follow about that, but as of yet we haven't really announced it.

Is it a primetime major network, or…?

Well at this point, it's actually going to be premiering on the Internet. But I'm not sure where exactly, what the details are, so I'm kind of writing it blind. They filmed the pilot and that's all done, but there hasn't been any sort of official deal yet. They're still kind of negotiating and haven't released any details, but they're already working on more episodes.

That's definitely a good team to get involved with, their work…

They're the best in the business. I think as far as, you know, writing for television, I think they're right up there, and it's really been... not even just for television but for any medium, 'cause they're really, an honor and a pleasure to work with them. I'm excited about, sort of, it's a great place to start as a writer, to have those guys as mentors. I'm excited about it.

Okay, well, thank you very much for talking to us, Devon!

Alright, well, thanks for having me and good luck with everything on the website. Like I said, it's a great place for people to go, and I think it's cool. It's one of the only places I've seen where you can go and have access to all your favorite shows, you know, you don't have to just go to one network website. It's nice, and a great thing.

Thank you very much!

Alright man, take care!

Thank you Keri for bringing that over. I actually liked last nights eppy better than the week before. I would have preferred more Devon of course but I thought it was a better episode.

According to the website hollywoodprivacywatch, there was a Devon sighting at IKEA last week. I wonder if the smoking hot girl he's referring to is Majandra? wink.gif

· 7/29 - IKEA Burbank (i know, i know...sad) - Devon Gummersall (Brian Krakow - he of the pubescent paradigm of the early 90s "My So-Called Life") still working the gently cascading pre-raphaelite curls, though not as long nor unkempt, fresh dewey skin and a smoking hot girl macking on him.

It's not just you. I think the series started off slow, but I've been really into the last couple episodes. Hopefully the trend will continue and each episode will be better than the last.

Things have definitely picked up on the show. I hope Taj *spelling* wife left his sorry a$$.

Seems Devon was one of the celebrities at Dennis Quaid's 2007 golf and poker fundraiser. Here's the link: http://www.quaidcharityweekend.com/

There are tons of photos, I don't have time but maybe one of you other Pixies can go through them to see if you can find one of Devon or maybe of the happy couple.

I took a quick look through the pictures. I didn't see Majandra. The only picture I saw of Devon was on the 9th page, 2nd to last row in the Gala photo gallery. Sorry but there is no direct link to the picture. His white shoes crack me up - in a good way. He looks like he should be in an 80s band. Don't get me wrong though, I still think he looks as cute as a button. wink.gif

Maybe that's when Majandra was busy with Tarte and its high volume of sales, so Devon went solo. On a positive but off topic note, I did see a picture of Billy Burke too. eyebrows.gif

If any of the other Pixies have a little time, maybe they can find another picture or two. smile.gif

Next Sunday is the last episode of the season. I haven't heard anything one way or another if the show is coming back next season yet. I don't know if anyone else has seen anything.
