Bradley and I just spoke to Michael Trucco on the phone, and he asked me to share some information with you good people:

Michael was in a serious car accident on Sunday. Although he suffered a broken neck, I'm tremendously relieved to be able to report that he's expected to make a full recovery ... in fact, he came home from the hospital yesterday!

Michael was a passenger in a Ferrari that overturned after the driver lost control on a curve and went down an embankment as they were coming home from a Ferrari event. The driver walked away unharmed, but the roof had crumpled on the car and fractured four of Michael's vertebrae. Amazingly enough, he was able to crawl from the wreckage on his own, make a series of phone calls and generally direct the rescue efforts (okay, I'm exaggerating on that last one). He was flown by helicopter to UCLA Medical Center, where he was placed in traction, and surgery was performed on Monday to fuse his C-6 and C-7 vertebrae to his C-5.

Michael's now wearing a heavy-duty neck brace (and glad to be out of the Frankenstein "halo"). The itermittent pain can be intense, but his spirits are good. His fiancee has been by his side the entire time, and his parents have come to town, too. He says the support he's received from them, as well as from his friends, has been "incredible. It really makes a difference."

He's scheduled to remain in the collar brace for up to six weeks, and will start rehab after that, so he's got some tough work ahead of him. But (to borrow from Michael Taylor) for all the terrible luck, Michael was apparently very lucky in the outcome: His surgeon says only one in a hundred people walk away from an accident like that ... and it looks as though Michael is that person. He timed it pretty well, too … BSG isn't being filmed right now, as everyone knows, and NBC has assured him that the pilot he's slated to shoot will be held for him … well, how could they do anything else? He is "The Man of Your Dreams," isn't he?

Michael says he will post here when he can, but he wanted everyone to have the facts about what happened. Maybe one of you would like to start a special thread for people who want to send him good wishes for a "speedy" recovery?

http://forums.scifi.com/index.php?showtopic=2295642

Michael, get well soon. A coworker of mine had a similar sounding accident while skiing a year and half ago. He had to wear the collar for a while but has since made a full recovery (and now tries to recruit us all to join his gym smile.gif)

I just read this over on skiffy. The link to the thread just said you were in an accident, and then the first sentence of the post was "Michael broke his neck" and my heart lept into my throat. When I read the next sentence that you were home and expected to make a full recovery, I actually had tears of relief. I am so happy to hear that! What a terrible accident, but how fortunate you were to walk away. I'll be praying for you to make a speedy recovery, and that until you are completely healed you are at least as comfortable as possible. God bless!

Oh, and kudos to you for keeping your spirits up. That's great for you, and an inspiration for all of us!

I've been visiting this forum for awhile, but this is the first time I've replied. My heart hit my throat when I read this, I am so relieved to hear that Michael is going to be okay.

I'll be thinking about you over the next several weeks, Michael. I know recovery will be a pain in the ass, but you're clearly strong enough to pull it off.

I can't imagine how it must feel. A broken bone is one thing, but broken bones in your neck that help support your head? And how is the guy able to sleep at night with that kind of pain? That's crazy. I'm looking forward to when the Trucco comes back and is able to type out his story for us to read.

I was shocked to read about this over on the Scifi forum, I hope Mr Trucco has a speedy and full recovery.

I've been lurking in this forum for a few months now, but I haven't posted before. I first read this over at Skiffy, and I was horrified when I read about your terrible accident, but I was very relieved to hear you're expected to make a full recovery smile.gif

Take it easy Michael, and know that all of your fans are thinking of you and sending you good wishes. And remember, we love you. hug.gif

Hey all!

First off, thank you so very much for all of your kind words and well wishes. Secondly, I AM going to make a full recovery, better than before, stronger than ever. And hearing from all of you and all the good energy being sent my way can only motivate me even more!
It's been a crazy week and a half to say the least. The paramedics on the scene that tended to me first said I was lucky to even be alive, let alone be able to pull myself outta the damn thing. The roof completely collapsed on the passenger side. I knew the second we rolled over and crashed down hard on the asphalt that something was seriously wrong with my neck. When everything settled, my hands were laying next to my face on the roof of the car and THEY WOULD NOT MOVE. Needless to say, that scared the s#*t out of me. I took a beat, and remember thinking to myself that I CANNOT be paralyzed. This just can't happen to me....I won't let that happen! And suddenly I looked at my right hand and the damn thing reached up and unclipped my seatbelt. Just like that....I had feeling (painful feelings) but feeling nonetheless. Then somehow I managed to crawl out on the driver's side after my friend got out and get to the side of the highway and lay down. From there I made a couple of calls and waited for the ambulance with my friend and about a dozen or so other motorists who pulled over to help. From there I was taken down the road to a waiting helicopter ready to take me to UCLA Trauma Center. It got progressively more frightening from that point on as the seriousness of what just happened started to set in.

Anyhow, I don't want to bore you all with every mundane detail, but I just needed to tell that side of the experience and let you all know that I cherish each and every new day with every rising sun. Life is precious, friends and family are priceless. I am sincerely grateful for all that I have. I sign off on all of my posts with the same mantra that means so much to me. But now more than ever the words really ring true.

So to one and all: LOVE this life, and LIVE the love everyday.

My best,
Michael

Whoa. That's a hell of a story. I'm really glad that you are doing so well, and wanted to add to the chorus of well wishes for a speedy recovery. Or a seedy one if you prefer. wink.gif

Man, I thought it was scary enough reading about it, I can't imagine what it must have been like living it.

You get yourself better soon, and know there's tons of love and good thoughts headed your way.

I just wanted to join everyone else in wishing you a speedy (or seedy cool.gif ) recovery, Michael. I'm a huge fan of the work you do on BSG and I'm looking forward to checking out your new show, too. Your accident is terrifying to read about and must have been incredibly so to live through, but thank God you're going to be all right. I can't wait until April rolls around and we get to see more BSG, and more Samuel T. Anders! Thanks for all that you and the rest of the cast do to make the show so special.

All my best.

Michael,

I just had to say that reading your first hand account of what happened was absolutely terrifying. I know there must have been someone watching over you. Thank goodness you survived, and are going to make a full recovery. I do believe that mind over matter is half the battle, and you're obviously a very strong person

That said, you ever scare us like this again, and we might have to beat you with a nice fluffy pillow wink.gif

Michael,

I had a pretty nasty accident that I was lucky to have survived. It changed a lot about me but also strangely enough made me fear death less. Perhaps we go through these things so we can appreciate what we have and not worry so much about the things we can't have or can't change.

I hope you have a healthy and speedy recovery. smile.gif

Good to see you posting, Michael! I hope your recovery is going well, and that you're feeling much better this week. I'm continuing to pray for a comfortable recovery.

I did go over last week and check out Sandra's site. She seems like a very sweet person. You're lucky to have each other.

Please keep us all updated on your recovery. I'm really looking forward to seeing my favorite toaster back onscreen soon!

Truc,

I attempted to send you a get well card and a letter to let you know how extremely
relieved I was that you were ok after that horrendous accident. Unfortunately, both
were returned as undeliverable. You have no idea how thrilled I am that you are ok
and on your road to recovery. I am also incredibly proud of you FINALLY getting your own,
well-deserved series on NBC. I can't wait to see it and I know it will be a smash.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS and KISSES always!

Michael is doing way, way better than anyone has a right to be doing- I'm beginning to wonder if he (not his character) is a Cylon... Walking, talking... granted, a nifty scar down his back, (perfect for redlighting), and the airport metal detector's gonna be fun, likely, but... Did get a chance to talk with him briefly while walking the line Wednesday, and he was there, walking. Was great to see and chat with him again, and also to see the recovery with the own eyes.

In all honesty, it is an amazing recovery, and I can't think of a nicer guy for it to be happening to.

Keep getting well MT- we're all rooting for you.

Hi Michael,

Saw Katee's Q&A at the Baghdad and heard how your accident influenced much in the script. Also, I saw her reaction to your accident, and your subsequent recovery, and it touched me.

You really are one very, very lucky person, and I'm sure you're counting your blessings everyday.

I know because my grandfather had the same injury as you did: broken neck (two vertebrae), about two months ago.

He survived the surgery and was in a halo, like you were. I was there and saw it, and can see how much pain he was and you were in.

He moved to a hard neck brace (which you probably did too) after a few weeks, I believe, and I helped him for a couple of painful and uncomfortable weeks of recovery.

Unfortunately, the strain and pain on his body was too much, and he did not recover. He just wasn't strong enough for it.

So, I'm just saying.... Yeah, you're really one lucky person.

love,
Sarah
