So I subscribed to the play the game movie newsletter on their website. Here is some awesome news about how great Play the Game is doing in theaters in Florida:

From the Producers:
"Our biggest fans are continuing to spread the word about Play The Game, and people are still coming out to the theaters in huge numbers!

Word-of-mouth about Play The Game continues to spread, and is key to the success of the movie which has now accumulated over $133,000 in box office sales. As a result of our growing fan base, we'll be staying in 16 theaters for another week!

Some amazing facts about the Play The Game release:

We moved up from the #50 movie for the week to the #44 movie for the week, just behind #43, which is Crossing Over starring Harrison Ford. We always knew that Andy Griffith was just as big a star as Harrison Ford!

We dropped about 26% in box office revenue from week 1 to week 2, the smallest drop of any of the films that released the same week we did. The next smallest drop was 41% by Crossing Over.

We were ranked in the top half of 12 of our 16 theaters, and were the #1 or #2 film in five of those theaters. We're still beating out some of the biggest studio films with enormous advertising budgets behind them.

We were ranked #26 by Per Screen Average, just behind #25, which was Slumdog Millionaire, and ahead of Jonas Brothers, He's Just Not That Into You, and The Reader.
More exciting news coming soon about Play The Game's expansion into new markets..."

Here is a note from the producers:

"Dear Friends and Fans,

Play The Game arrives in theaters ONE MONTH FROM TODAY, on August 28th, in over 15 different cities, on 55 screens. To be successful, we need over 40,000 people to go see the movie on opening weekend. And since we don't have millions of dollars to spend on advertising, we're relying on our friends, fans, and volunteers to get the word out about the film.

Please forward this email today to your friends, acquaintances, family, employees, chat buddies, enemies, boyfriends, girlfriends, partners, significant others, ex's, and anybody else whose email address you have, and ask them to sign up on our website or facebook page so we can remind them to go see the movie on August 28th.

You'll be glad you did on August 29th, so you and your friends don't feel left out when everybody is sitting around the water cooler at work talking about that great movie they saw last night.

And if you'd like to help out in other ways (handing out postcards, reaching out to the press, tattooing 'Play The Game' across your forehead) please email us at volunteers@playthegamemovie.com or register by clicking here to become an official volunteer.

Here is a decent review of 'Play the Game.' Still haven't seen it yet... I thought it was comming to my area, just must have been here for a weekend? confused.gif shrug.gif

It's from idahostatesman.com
by Robert Moore:

"Here's an AARP-friendly romantic comedy about a "playa" who tries to teach his grandpa how to "Play the Game," while Grandpa tries to teach sonny boy about true love and companionship.

The novelty here is that Gramps is the great Andy Griffith, and the ladies he tries to work his magic on are Doris Roberts ("Everybody Loves Raymond") and Liz Sheridan ("Seinfeld"). But Marc Fienberg has written and directed a 75-minute movie that he spread over a 103-minute film. Speed would have covered a multitude of sins.

Paul Campbell, sort of a younger Ryan Reynolds, is David, the slick, people-reading super salesman at his dad's (Clint Howard) car dealership. He runs through his "steps," first to his work pal (Geoffrey Owens of "The Cosby Show"), then to Grandpa Joe, whom he promised his late grandmother he'd teach how to date again.

"Step 1: Reconnaissance ... Step 2: You have to meet her, or rather, have her meet you."

Grandpa isn't crazy about it, but if it'll make him "a real chick maggot" he's game.

"That's chick magnet."

"Oh, that would make more sense."

Meanwhile, David has met somebody who might fit Grandpa's definition of true love - Julie (Marla Sokoloff). But try as he might he can't run his game plan on her. She's got his number.

"Play the Game" takes an interminable hour to get going. Every scene, every line reading, plays slow. There's no snap to it.

Then, in parallel scenes, Joe meets Viagra (and a randy Sheridan) and David "runs out of gas" with Julie, and the movie pops into gear.

It's a smidge naughty and plenty sweet. Griffith hams it up, and Sokoloff makes a dreamy romantic "goal" for her bland leading man. But this "Game" feels more like practice. Every play's run at half speed"
EOcean214
Marc Feinberg accredited in Wall Street Journal to his creativity in plugging 'Play the Game' and raising support for the movie.

"Marc Fienberg, head of Story Films Inc., a production company in Los Angeles, also found his enterprise wasn't garnering much respect from the venture capital community. So he tapped some acquaintances from his days at Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management and proceeded to network for about three years.

"I quickly realized that to do this, I'd have to reach outside my comfort zone," he says. "There was no room to be shy or humble."

In total, Mr. Fienberg says he pitched to hundreds of contacts, many of whom scoffed at the idea and told him he was wasting his time. But eventually he found 17 people—made up primarily of Kellogg alumni—who were interested. He flew to meet each in person.

From 2007 to 2009, Mr. Fienberg says he secured between $1 million and $5 million. His company's first film, "Play the Game," recently landed in theaters and has grossed about $500,000 in box office sales."

No news on a dvd release date! Never got a chance to see it myself! sad.gif Here is a pretty honest review of the movie. It combines both the good and the bad of the movie pretty well:

Source: Brian Orndorf, www.dvdtalk.com

There are a few things I'm resigned to never seeing materialize on the big screen: a competent "Highlander" sequel, a sincere performance from Kristin Stewart, and a modern horror film photographed and edited with imagination. Of course, "Andy Griffith in a senior citizen sex comedy" used to be on this list, but then "Play the Game" came along. Truly an oddball motion picture, "Game" is one part smutty romp, one part romantic comedy, with the entertainment value of the feature resting solely in how uncomfortably blunt it can get. Honestly, movies like this do not come along every day, making the film a welcome oddity; that is if one can stomach watching an American acting legend make his "O Face" while receiving oral sex from the woman who once played Jerry's mother on "Seinfeld."

A slick-talking bachelor who enjoys the art of picking up women, David (Paul Campbell, "Battlestar Galactica") has decided to help his grandfather Joe (Andy Griffith) find companionship again after the death of his wife. Showing Joe the ways of elaborate seduction, David hopes to offer his grandfather a new social venue. Instead, Joe discovers the miracle of Viagra, taking off as a Don Juan of his retirement community. With Joe scoring left and right, David is learning a more difficult lesson, finding his charms and schemes unable to convince acquaintance Julie (Marla Sokoloff) to turn their friendship into the relationship David never knew he wanted.

"Play the Game" isn't an easy recommendation to make. In fact, I'm not sure I would eagerly push anyone toward it without a clear explanation of the experience to come. Written and directed by newcomer Marc Fienberg, "Game" is a perfectly suitable sitcom experience that endeavors to liven up senior living traditions with a little playful sexuality, not unlike Susan Seidelman's similar 2006 film, "Boynton Beach Club." While unquestionably edgy in a bizarre way, I never found "Game" offensive. Actually, the picture is quite approachable and occasionally scores a laugh. Fienberg directs loosely but effectively, drawing together these diverse characters for broad situations of romantic failure and bedroom triumph. Again, a certain spiritual fluidity is required to embrace the shenanigans, but the bravery is rewarded with some decent-sized giggles peppered around the picture.

Also enriching "Game" is the cast, who make Fienberg look competent with their startlingly confident performances. Campbell makes for a steady lead, charismatically guiding the film through the narrative nonsense while the rest of the ensemble has more fun with the slapstick. Campbell generates faint sparks with the radiant Sokoloff, who also shows admirable dexterity with the low-heat screenplay. The security of youth in the romantic comedy department is comforting, but "Game" is truly Griffith's picture, giving the legend ample room to ham it up as the horndog senior looking for love in all the wrong places. It's a treat to watch Griffith really dig into the questionable role, supported well by the rest of the eager senior troupe (including Doris Roberts, Rance Howard, and Liz Sheridan).

With spicy content that could really turn off much of the target demographic, it's a shame Fienberg doesn't go all the way with his screenplay. "Game" switches to robot mode in the final act by introducing sludgy melodrama, adding a sense of gravity to the movie that wasn't there before. Being Fienberg's first film, the fear of originality is understandable. Still, when a filmmaker is able to sweet talk someone like Andy Griffith into what amounts to be a cheeky Benny Hill-like role, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a little more invention behind the camera to match the cockeyed casting.
