Vin, VG, Berry and all you other Doctor Who fans….Whoa on the Face of Bo theory ….. but…. if the Doctor and Martha know that Captain Jack is the Face of Bo – which this clip shows, then when they run into the F of B in other eps, why don’t they – DW, Martha & Captain Jack/Bo - have the kind of friendly - even effusive - relationship/recognition that their prior relationship (in Bo’s encarnation as Captain Jack) would lead a viewer to expect? The only thing I can think of to explain that is that they never encounter the F of B after they find out that Jack is Bo. What do y’all think?…

So far, the Doctor has never met the Face of Bo after he discovered Jack is one and the same. However, he might have off-screen.... In various scenes, he does call the Face of Bo "old friend" and there is conversation between the two of them about all that they have shared etc. So the hint is there - although I doubt that's what was intended when those scenes were written.

QUOTE(Vinity @ Jun 10 2008, 09:05 PM) *

And, it also makes me feel so bad for Captain Jack and his eventual future…. But, in one ep, don’t they say that the Face of Bo is dying? So Jack finally gets his wish to die? The explanation of how Jack became the F of B would make for one very interesting ep!

Are you seeing Doctor Who in the wrong order? confused.gif Or have you not seen all the episodes? look.gif The Face of Bo does die... So Jack does get his wish, I suppose. Although not for a very, very, very long time!

Imagine all that he's lived through in all that time - assuming her doesn't time travel again and miss out loads of years. In some ways, he's older than the Doctor in some episodes?? The Doctor jumps through time, but Bo lived it...? confused.gif

It would be interesting to see how Jack changes into Bo though. Although that would be a sad day for me. I like Jack as he is! lol.gif

I think I'd rather be a big head in a jar than a big piece of skin stretched really tight. grin.gif
Vinity
Ditto B grin.gif

I had forgotten the Doctor does call Face of Boe his old friend. I had just figured that in the Doctor's timeline the clip came after the Doctor's encounter with Boe and his death {finally} Who has never, frankly, been great with time paradoxes lol.gif I usually just chalk it up to 'all that timey wimey wibbley wobley.....stuff"
Berengaria
Just because Dr. Who called the Face of Boe "old friend" doesn't mean that he realized that it was Captain Jack transmorgrified . His long friendship might have taken place when the Face of Boe was already unrecognizable as the sex-ay CJ.
vilandragirl
Interesting, Berengaria. As many times as we've seen the FoB, imagine how many times DW has seen him.

And also agreed. But it could mean that. It's one of those things we'll never know!

But then, thinking about it, the Doctor was with Martha when Bo died, and with Rose when he called him 'old friend', and with Martha again when Captain Jack revealed he used to be called Face of Bo. Therefore, in the Doctor's timeline, Bo died before he found out he was Jack. So he probably was referring to the fact he'd met him before.

The Face of Bo, of course, will have known, because he was Jack before he was the Face, and so in Jacks timeline, he knew he knew the Doctor for before - and knew about the Master - hence he knew the Doctor wasn't the only Timelord at the time he gave the Doctor that message.

I'm glad Who doesn't bother sorting out paradoxes lol.gif

Spook, I’m not seeing all the eps in the right order as I am catching some ep on different channels (PBS, Sci Fi, BBCA). …I don’t think I remember seeing the ep where the Face of Bo dies, though I do remember the ep with the cat-like “nurses” where they say he’s dying. (But I don’t remember his dying in that ep.) …ITA about finding out how Jack becomes Bo – but I really don’t like to think of Jack ending up as a giant head. eek.gif

I think she is referring to Captain Jack.

blush.gif Thanks VG. I guess I should have figured that one out, but when I hear "CJ" I think of the character in West Wing, CJ Cregg (played by Allison Janney) who was the press secretary.

Spook, the more I think about it, the more I hate the idea that Captain Jack becomes the Face of Bo. Jack is such a lusty, active guy. To have him end up as a giant disembodied (and not very attractive) head makes me bawl.gif

I know. It galls me too. I actually hate the idea and wish it hadn't been written that way.
Tekgirl
Berry, nope - she didn't warn me. grin.gif ...I guess Captain Jack's mother didn't warn him either.... wink.gif

Spook, ITA.

Does anyone know how "The Face of B????" is spelled? It occurred to me that it could be "The Face of Beau" - French for beautiful, which JB is. wink.gif
Berengaria
He is from the Boeshane peninsula, I believe. smile.gif
Spook
It's usually written "Face of Bo" in all the cult magazines and TV guides and interviews I've seen. Short for Boeshane (or Boshane?), as Berengaria says.
Tekgirl
Spook & Vin, I remember when Captain Jack said that he was from that penninsula; It sounded like an Asian location to me. I thought I heard Boshing (as in Peking) Penninsula - but my ears aren't as good as they were. Plus, I haven't read about DW or Torchwood in any cult magazines, so I've never seen it written. ....But Beau shane Penninsula would have been so apropos. grin.gif
Vinity
I've seen it written as Face of Boe a lot also.
Tekgirl

And I haven't seen it written at all, so........ Is part 1 of the DW 2 parter you and Spook liked so much on tonight on Sci Fi?
Berengaria
It was...and it was awesome. Can't wait for next week's. nod.gif
Vinity
The UK is on the last 3 grin.gif tonight it all begins grin.gif casting spoiler ROSE ROSE FRELLING ROSE!!!!
Tekgirl
Berry, ITA, is was a good ep! I enjoyed it too.

Vin , if GB is on the last 3 eps of DW and we here in the US are 2 eps behind GB, does that mean we have 5 eps left of this season? (Why did that sound like a word problem out of a junior high school math book? rotfl.gif )

Not that I'm overly aware of how many posts I have, but this post my "Battle of Hastings" post. (Wasn't it 1066 when that battle was fought?)
Vinity
The US just saw

4.8 Silence in the Library Part 1
4.9 Forest of the Dead Part 2
4.10 Midnight
4.11 Turn Left
4.12
4.13

So yes, US has 5 more, UK 2 more.
Tekgirl
Vin, thanks for keeping me on track with DW. Our local school TV station shows DW on Sunday evenings. (It shows some PBS shows along with shows produced just for the school district..) So I am catching up with past seasons thanks to KLCS. I think the season the eps are from is the one in which we lose Rose, though I'm not sure.

BTW, speaking of Rose, did you watch Diary of a Call Girl on Showtime?
Vinity
I don't get Showtime sad.gif Dv wants to get the DVDs when they come out. They are delaying series 2 cause Billy Piper is preggars.

The season we loose Rose is season 2 with all the Bad Wolf references. It's also the season we get Captain Jack grin.gif
Tekgirl
The nerve of Billie Piper - she starts a new series and then gets PG! To tell you the truth, I wasn't that impressed with the one ep I saw of Diary.

The DW ep I'm watching now (on the LA School District channel) is about an alien spaceship landing in London. The ep has Tosh in it (plus Pigmen and flatulent/alien government types). It was fun to see a familiar face. The Doctor is nine. I've only seen him in a couple of eps, but he seems a bit goofy to me - fun, but goofy.
Vinity
I really liked Nine. He's a good actor. I think he was a very well respected stage and film actor in the UK. I think they wanted someone very respectable when first re-introducing the Doctor. He wasn't the big fan of the original, I don't think he even watched it. Honestly, I thought he worked better with Rose much of the time than Ten. Ten and Rose could do too much of the "lurve" thing.

Now Ten was all fanboyish about being the Doctor cause he was a huge fan. I remember a story that right after he got the part he was dating a girl. He brought her back to his place and she saw all his memorabilia around and said "so they are giving you stuff, cool" Ten was too embarrassed to admit he'd had the stuff long since. lol.gif
vilandragirl
What a cute story! The first ep I watched was Smith and Jones, so I think I like Ten better simply because I got used to him before I saw CE. Besides DT is just super adorable.
Tekgirl
Vin, great DW stories. More please. grin.gif

I've only seen Nine in a few eps. He just seems so giddy to me - at least compared to Ten. Maybe after I see more eps with Nine in them I'll change my first impressions.

Both CE and DT are well known and respected actors here in the UK. There was some surprise when CE was cast, as he's so well known and respected... there was some shock, I think, that someone like him would consider doing Doctor Who. Which really helped the show.

And DT is most definitely a fan lol.gif It's so obvious in interviews and the Confidentials etc. He just trips past DW history off his tongue without effort - knowing all episodes inside and out lol.gif
Tekgirl
Spook, DT must have been all head-over-heels being cast as DW. There is nothing like a fan being cast on a show that he/she loves. I guess CE and DT (as well as all the other actors who played DW) will always have a second career appearing at fan cons.
Spook
Yeah, but the risk of being typecast is huge... and I think that's what most actors fear.
vilandragirl
It's sort of interesting, because prior to DW, I had only seen CE on Heroes, where he's pretty curmudgeonly, so I really had to force myself to get used to him as The Doctor.

I think it's cool that DT is such a fan. I think it matters that he's so up on the mythology. DW is a unique entity in that it has run for so long, and so many actors have played the same character. The only other thing that might be similar would be soap operas, but no one really cares about continuity on the soaps. The fact that DT knows the history should help somewhat with the continuity (although granted, he is always going to be tethered by the script).
Berengaria
I had a different introduction. I know Christopher Eccleston was well known in the UK (but not in the USA). And I had seen a few Doctor Who episodes as a kid, but that was a loooonnngg time ago. So when Eccleston appeared as the "new" Doctor Who.... he was "it" for me. I loved having the series and I loved him. So, I was very wary of them bringing in David Tennant after just one year. I didn't want to like him. And it took a while... but now, I am totally devoted to Tennant's "Doctor" and I think they should throw scads of money at him to keep him. He's great!
Vinity
It took me a while to like Ten as well as I do now. I actually liked him better after seeing him in his other roles. Plus, much as I love Rose, and love Ten, I don't love them together as much as I should.
Tekgirl
wave.gif VG, Berry& Spook, I’m back from my nephew’s wedding in Minnesota.

ITA, Spook. Typecasting is always a major concern when an actor gets cast in an iconic role. But, I think William Shatner is one of the few actors who was spectacularly able to move beyond being known only for being in a cult show.

VG, CE was in Heroes? doh.gif What character did he play?
Berengaria
He played the invisible guy named Claude Rains

from wikipedia

Claude Rains has the power to render himself invisible to the naked eye. This power is limited to the visible spectrum. It does not make him inaudible,[27] nor does it mask his body heat or other such emissions, allowing him to be tracked through thermal imaging or similar methods. In addition, Claude has the ability to see others using the same power; Peter, having copied Claude's power, can see him as easily as any normal person when invisible.

Claude's power also extends to everything in his immediate vicinity, namely his clothes and other personal effects. This is exemplified when Claude grabs a woman's purse and hands it to Peter, which becomes visible as Peter holds it in his arms. Claude also demonstrates the ability to render other people invisible through physical contact.

Claude seems to have complete control of his power. In the episode "Company Man", Claude claims to Mr. Bennet in a flashback that he was present during several meetings but could not be seen. It is worth noting however that he stated to Peter Petrelli that he has been invisible for quite some time in order to hide from Bennet and The Company, implying that his constant invisibility is his choice.

It should be noted that Claude Rains was a film star who portrayed the invisible man in the movie of the same name.

rotfl.gif ....So William Shatner will forever only be known as Captain Kirk in the UK? I guess his other shows, TJ Hooker & Boston Legal, never made it to the UK?

Berry, I remember the Invisible Man and how Peter P had the same power; I just didn't know who CE was, so I didn't recognize him in Heroes. Thanks for the 411 on the IM. BTW, I remember seeing the original movie with Claude Rains on one of the classic movie channels. ....Does anyone remember the Chevy Chase movie where he inadvertently becomes invisible? He uses foundation/body makeup to be visible to others. And, uses White Out Correction Fluid on his teeth to make his invisible teeth visible. lol.gif
Vinity
I like it when a star is really a fan of the show he's on, not that it's just an interesting job. That's one reason I like Marsters and the Farscape guys. You realize they LIKE scifi. One thing I love on the Farscape commentaries is how Ben can STILL say his lines from an ep years later lol.gif Claudia even joins him some but I remember in one commentary she was trashing him for still knowing his lines lol.gif
Spook
I love that about Ben as well lol.gif

As for TJ Hooker and Boston Legal - we got them, but they were never as big as Star Trek. And Shatner was well typecast by then...
Berengaria
from Outpost Gallifrey:

With the grand finale of series four of Doctor Who only days away, fans are being given two chances to ask questions of chief writer and executive producer Russell T Davies, as the final full series to be overseen by the Welshman draws to a close.

The BBC News website will be publishing a question and answer feature with Davies at the weekend, and are currently inviting readers to submit questions to be put to him.

Davies will be appearing on ITV1's "This Morning" on Friday, and the programme is also inviting the public to submit questions. Questions can be submitted by e-mailing thismorning@itv.com.
Tekgirl
Spook, I think that William Shatner will forever be known as Captain Kirk no matter what other roles he's cast in. He's just luckier than most in the Star Trek series to have found a career that includes other roles besides JT Kirk. (George Takei, DeForrest Kelly, Nichelle Nichols, James Doohan, Walter Koenig and Leonard Nimoy never did much in front of the camera after Star Trek TV & movies, though Nimoy's career morphed into a successful directing gig.)

Berry, since you Spook & Vin are my conduits to all things DW, I gleaned from someone's prior post that a new DW (#11) is just around the corner. So the series will continue, but with a different actor and different showrunner/head writer?
Berengaria
There will be a new show runner...Steven Moffat taking over (I think after the Specials) but to the best of my knowledge at this point David Tennant is doing the specials this coming year and the Doctor Who series the year after that. After that, it's too soon to tell what will happen. Unless...
Tekgirl
Berry, don't you just hate being kept in the dark? sad.gif

BTW, John Barrowman is one of the top ten on a list of hotties compiled by Gays. The list contains both straight and gay actors.
Vinity
Tek grin.gif yeah, Moffat is taking over from Russel T Davies and I'm SO ready for it to happen. I'm tired of the gay gags EVERY week and I'm ready to never see another Dalek again!!! I think Moffat has written most of my fav eps. He's a lot more elegant with story and special effects IMO but I do think he's a step away from the classic feel of Doctor Who but I think it's time to take that step. Moffat wrote our introduction to Captain Jack with Empty Child and The Doctor Dances, then he wrote Girl in the Fireplace from year 2 and he wrote Blink. I also liked the Library one but not as well as Blink.

I'm not sure what is happening with Ten. Rumor has it he's there for the special for next year but why only do specials to accommodate Ten doing theater for next year if he's going to drop it right after but with last weeks ep I'm not sure what the hell is going on eek.gif

John Barrowman is sexy for anyfreakingone lol.gif

rotfl.gif ....As for the "Moffat" era of DW, I just hope he comes up with better creatures than Daleks and Pigmen. The limited eps that I've seen make me feel that there's room for improvement on the "alien front."

Spook
Anything other than the continuous trawling out of the Darleks and Cybermen will be an improvement, IMO... I was happy to see both return - but not every frelling series!!!
Tekgirl
Spook, I haven't watched that many DW eps yet, but I am also ready for an infusion of new and nifty "other worldly critters."
