I just saw a really long, but good preview of Brendan's new 3 day event show 'Samurai Girl' on ABC FAM after Harry Potter.

The wild turkey has landed

I'm okay, but I was a bit freaked out at first. I could have used some of that 'wild turkey' though.
I was broiling some meat and making a salad at the same time. I had just turned the meat over and turned my attention back to the salad when I began to smell smoke. I looked at the oven and saw flames. I opened the door, pulled out the rack and at that moment that AC kicked on and fanned the flames. I managed to get the pan on the stove where I poured water on it, but I also rescued the meat, which amazingly wasn't burned. The foil I had under the meat had caught fire. Never had that happen before No idea if the upper element is ruined or not. I will have to have someone who knows check it out.

I think my PC was poisoned! I got a PM here about 4pm and it's been freaky ever since...

Lori, sadly I have lit my oven on fire twice. I am a decent cook, I swear. It is a scary experience so I totally sympathize with you. The first time, I was living at my sister's house. As is typical with us, I flipped out and started screaming that there was a fire. She calmly walked into the kitchen, opened the oven door, and blew the fire out. She's definitely the person you want around in a crisis The second time it happened, I tried to blow it out, but it was too big, but I had learned by then that the trick is to close the oven door and turn off the heat. It worked. I probably shouldn't be allowed anywhere near an oven.

I got the PM spam also. I'd run a norton scan just to be sure.

CAT and Vinity I got it too, and did what Vin did.

vilandragirl I tried the blowing, but my lung capacity is horrible. Closing the door and turning off the heat didn't help. That is when I pulled the rack out and the pan. I thought about baking soda, but it and the fire extinguisher were not within reach. No grease, so water worked.

I am off to bed.

Sounds like something I’d do… I hope there wasn’t any damage to your kitchen, your stove – or you! And WTG and on rescuing the meat. VG, you’ve had oven fires, too? All I can say is that we OTOs are “hot stuff.”

Vin, I know that Verizon has the highest rating of customer satisfaction in Los Angeles. I haven’t done any research on Verizon in other cities. I do really love the song ID feature – especially since my “new” used car doesn’t display that info even when the radio station does. If you do end up with Verizon, make sure that you get a phone that has the ID feature; not all phones do. BTW, if you speak with a sympathetic Verizon operator, you might get a upgrade on the free phone you’ll get. I’ve always had good luck with the Verizon operators. (I’ve personally found that the phone operators are more willing to upgrade, try to please the customer, etc. than the people in the Verizon stores.) ......Vin, sorry that you’re still not feeling good. At least the Oxycodone works. So, are we going to see some PWI?

I've been meaning to ask you what PATST means?


Well I spent 8 hours on a ladder pulling nails from the rafters at Boy1's house yesterday... I don't mind the actual nail pulling or being on a step ladder or no A/C (temp was about 85) it's just that when they took the ceiling down they left pieces of the fiberboard behind and you get wood 'dust' all over you, in your eyes and nose when that falls. I finally put on goggles, but forgot to grab a dust mask. Got home about 10pm, headed straight for the shower and washed out my nose with the neti pot afterwards. It must have really worn me out because I slept till 4pm today!

I'm really glad Boy1 decided to 'gut' the whole house and redo everything before moving in... It's a little 5 room house, about 800 sq ft according to the appraiser, but a good place for Boy1 to start. I also hope redoing everything helps him appreciate it better. ... All of the walls and ceilings were made of some kind of pressed wood fiber board with a paper covering... I shudder to think of the fire hazzard!... The rafters are 2x4s instead of 2x6s and most of them are pieced together, which is why they are bowed. We really couldn't see the 'bow' before because of drop ceilings... The electrical wiring is the original 2 strand black wire (the house was built in the 40s) and not a ground wire in the whole place!

Hi everybody. We are back from Lubbock and most of the the have returned to their home planets. Now all our shops will take down the extra alien stuff and we shall return to normal.

I have never set the oven on fire, I have however set the microwave on fire, which I was told is just sad.

Lori glad you are okay. You have to be careful when making blackened meat, there is a trick to it and alot of it has to do with the spices you use.

Can't wait to find out what happened on Doctor Who. Seems you either loved it or hated it. And we'll have to see what direction it takes with RTD leaving.

I did see someone put a CD into a microwave (deliberately) - very pretty sparks and arcs but I wouldn't recommend it

Oh... I just saw that Maxi explained PATST. jero, when I notice that other OTOs are online at the same time as I am – and especially when they are writing a post at the same time I am, I put PATST. It’s just another way to and acknowledge that other OTOs are on at the same time. ....Wow! on all the work you’re doing on Boy #1’s new house. It sounds like he’s going to end up with practically a new house. Plus he’s going to learn a lot of home repair skills. ...Do you make house calls? When you’re finished working on his home, I could use your help around here.

at DV’s attachment to things. Verizon should spring for a free phone for every line that you have on your plan. Maybe getting a new, high tech looking phone will inpire DV to give up his old phone. Besides, most new phones are a lot lighter than the older ones. ...Another Verizon feature (which is probably not unique to Verizon?) is you can get unlimited GPS on your phone (for an extra fee) or you can pay to use it for 24 hours for a one time fee. For those of us who don’t have GPS in our car, it’s a nice feature to have available. (I just use it on a "as-needed basis for a small fee.)

Covina Guy was lurking?

I went by the school after the tree trimmer left and I ran errands. I am LIVID! My classroom was the only one NOT cleaned by the previous Teacher even though she promised me she would. Thick hot glue is all over the cabinet doors and walls, tape is all over the board and door, dust and left overs are all over the counters and in the cabinets, the board is 1/2 up and full of staples, paper is in the sink all wet, the hall walls are a mess....I could go on, but I will cry if I do. All of the other teachers did a great job of cleaning their classrooms. My 2 computers were missing too. The Principal is hunting those down. I moved furniture the best I could with the boxes I left at school. I won't take stuff from storage or home until I scrub the room top to bottom. Oh, and my group time rug is filthy!!! The room smells stale too. It will take me a full day to clean. If the school won't clean the rug I'll have to get a steamer to do it myself. This is why I wanted to start early.
Oh, and I dropped a computer table on the top of my foot in the ankle area.
I have a nice bruise forming and a knot.
Otherwise, I had a good day

SO47, that video is frightening, but even more scary is that under the "related videos" there's tons of videos of people putting random stuff in the microwave. One of them linked to a site that's all about smashing electronics. And they don't spend any of their own money, they get donations on their site to buy electronics that they can smash! Oy!

jero, you slept to 4pm I hope you felt well rested. Sometimes when you get too much sleep, it's even worse.

Meghann, your stories about living in Roswell crack me up. I live in a VERY touristy area, and so I can totally relate to people having no clue that there's people that actually live there and have to have a life. I just have to get out to Roswell someday to see all the people.

Lori & Maxi, I am honored to be in such sage and discerning company as the two of you in the “I Love Alan Rickman” fan club. He is can be so wonderfully superior (translation: superciliously snotty) in some of his roles and when he’s arch and wry.... well, he’s just great. And sexy, too.

Lori, on the mess in which the prior teacher left your room. I know I’m being a major Pollyana, but is there any chance the principal/janitor/school district will get a crew in to clean your room? What did the last teacher do.... Have a “let’s mess up the room” party with her kids on the last day of school? ....And on your bruised foot.

We had a great time in Lubbock, my sister and her family are a blast. I'm starting to get very big (at least in my opinion) 6 down, 3 to go Woo Hoo!!

Michael's 25th birthday is on Sunday and I need to come up with something fun to do, because he said the only good thing about turning 25 is that his part of the car insurance will go down. That's no fun!!

Meghann & Lori, I thought Alan Rickman was terrific in Dogma, too.

Meghann, I was waiting for someone to ask me what a “flaming groovie” aka “flaming groovy” was. It’s a piece of homemade lunacy/toy that epitomizes the dumb things we did way back when… ...I can't believe I'm even posting what it was.... You got a wire coat hanger. Then you tightly twisted/wrapped/knotted thin plastic bags (the ones that are on clothes from the dry cleaner) around the bottom of the coat hanger. You sort of ended up with a plastic bag “tail” that had knots and twists. …OK I am almost too to continue….. …Then you hung the hanger in a doorway and placed a pail with water under the contraption. Then you lit the bottom of the plastic bag with a match and turned out the lights. Flaming gobs of melted plastic would drip off the “tail” and be extinguished in the pail of water. The lit plastic would light up the inside of the pail before it was put out. It also made a neat “zipping” sound as it melted and fell downward and then made another neat sizzling sound as it was put out in the water. We thought it was so cool to watch …I did say that it was a toy of its time….. Please tell me that I’m not the only one who remembers doing this? Someone ‘fess up, please?

BTW, there was also a short lived rock band with the same name.

I make blackened toast on a regular basis... I keep my kitchen smoke free by opening the door to the house (which also opens into the kitchen) very wide... and watching the smoke ignore this wide opening and drift towards my stairwell instead. Just to test my smoke alarm, you understand

Home phone is back up still no cell phone In Eastern NC US cellular has the most coverage BUT they are still using the analogue system which was supposed to stop in Jan08 but they got an extension till Sept 08. So after Sept, according to the Verizon guy, no one know what they will do or what their coverage will be? Plus, Verizon has purchased Altell which will give them more coverage once that goes thru. If we can find DVs hospital ID we can get a %20 discount on rates and basically equipment {phones} for free or nearly free. I looked at a blackberry that will work overseas also and I can get that for $10 after rebate. So we're frantically trying to find DV's ID but he hasn't seen it in 8 or 9 years

Did I mention that I went to sleep at 3am? So that was only 13 hours. I think I forgot to take a 12-hr Sudafed before I went to sleep that night/morning... I always sleep long when I forget that.

Whoever is keeping the list... Put me on the "I Don't Care For Alan Rickman" list.

I’m almost to poke my head back in after admitting (and describing) the particulars about the “flaming groovy.”



SO47, yep – I haven’t seen a flaming groovy in decades. It was just funny to even remember doing that. …But that doesn’t mean I haven’t done other stupid things since – especially if they’re fun….

jero, actually, the flaming groovy was very to watch and hear. As for starting fires with them – luckily we never did. Plus, that’s what the pail of water under the contraption helped prevent. Plus, we never hung it over a carpet.

I always check to see if there is a AAA discount, etc for things that I buy/get. The worst that they can tell me is “no.” As my Mom always tells me, “Nothing ventured, nothing gained.” …Is all of NC still analog or just US Cellular? It seems to me that getting a digital cell phone would be the way to go no matter what plan you go with. …You can get a Blackberry for $10 if you sign up with Verizon? So...I watched the Doctor Who finale last night and I neither loved it nor hated it, in fact I'm pretty indifferent to the whole thing - which probably is the one reaction RTD would have hoped not to get Actually I spent most of the episode in fact thinking of how closely one of my holiday companions resembled one of the cast, I couldn't think who at the time until last night then it struck me that she looked like Gwen forom Torchwood

I just spent a lovely 2 hours with the Norton tech. Does anyone else have problems with Norton or am I just the black hole of virus control? This is the forth time in 10 months I've had to reinstall cause of a corrupt program. It is somewhat gratifying to to see the Norton Tech have to fight the damn thing for over an hour before admiting defeat and removing the program and starting again. I started out with a disc for Norton Security 07 bought in Oct 07 even tho 08 was out cause the first 07 I had bought in 06 gave me nothing but grief. I figured tech support for the newer program would be bad and at least they had practice for 07. So then, bout 5 months ago they gave up and upgraded me to 08 cause the 07 was just never gonna work. Now I'm having problems with 08 corrupting. Geesh!

The bright news is the home phone is working I feel less disconnected. Without home phone or Cell phone I felt quite at odds with the world

SO47 They had the frelling Doctor { I don't care it was the not/Doctor } running out of the TARDIS with a frelling GUN!!!!! :xThat is wrong on so many levels. And that is just the start of my hate. They send the not/Doctor off with Rose????? Just cause he looks like the Doctor and sounds like the Doctor and has the Doctor's memories, he ain't the real Doctor!!! They made it clear Donna got the timelord part of his brain, that's why she couldn't live like that. Rose was even saying that WHILE not/Doctor was standing RIGHT there!!!! Yeah, right, that relationship was really going to go smoothly If Mickey left with Jack Rose could have left with the Real Doctor, and I'm not even a Rose/Ten shipper!! If your gonna do the clone thing it should be equal clones like the ......oops about to spoil for Farscape. Then the taking of Donna's memories!!! What, huh????? That is the meanest thing EVER. Just freaking kill her!!! It would be kinder!. Plus, too many people came back to do justice to anyone. They canceled each other out Can you tell I wasn't neutral?

Vin I guess it's fair to say I haven't "invested" as much in DW as you, so I didn't really take note of the issues that upset you so

Question: am I the only one who doesn't like Rose? I didn't see any of the episodes where she was the Doctor's companion and I don't like Billie Piper much anyway. I blame "Because We Want To" from her earlier singing days (anyone know the song?

Vin, I'm sorry for all of your tech woes. Last month I was the one with all the tech problems (both the the HDs on my 2 laptops crashed within 4 days of each other). Michelle in Yonkers told me that "Mercury was in retrograde" - and in the house of Gemini (my "house"), so I was a walking timebomb around all things tech. I hope that's not the case for you. ...Re Norton - maybe you want to consider getting another anti-virus program? Norton seems to be a pain in the derriere for you.

SO47, I'm just now catching the Rose DW eps. Maybe it's because I'm used to Martha - and like her a lot - but I'm not too impressed with the Rose character so far.

SO47 I actually liked Rose OK. I wasn't that fond of Rose with Ten. I'm of the school the Doctor shouldn't be diddling his companions and Ten and Rose were just a little too smug and in lurve for me most of the time. I love Ten, I love Rose, I actually liked the IDEA of them together OK but the actuality of it fell flat for me.

I did know about Billie's singing days. I saw an interview where she just trashed herself over it. She said it was all crap, she felt she was fackig and cheating people and that was why she pulled out. You have to give her points for honestly. I guess she was real young, like in mid teens?

Spook and Tek our cleaning crew only do floors in the classrooms for cleaning. The new campus doesn't do floors well either. They waxed OVER the stains instead of stripping then waxing The teacher that left the mess will get an earful from me when I see her! Angry Lori is never good.
