Full Version: "The Ugly Truth" Posters' Review Thread
MediaBlvd Forums > Media Blvd Categories > Celebrities - Female > Katherine Heigl
Isabel Anne Evans
Since TUT will have many sneak previews starting tomorrow I thought it would be a good idea to make this thread a week early lol. It's just easier to separate the news from posters' reviews for the time being. Eventually the TUT review and news threads will be merged before the dvd release.

This thread is designed to post your own reviews and discuss the movie with fellow posters. There is also no need for spoiler tags just because you saw the movie first before anyone else. On that note post away.....

luzaleja
Ok... So I watched the movie... smile.gif
Im happy cuz.. 1st... I didnt have to show my Passport... so at least people thought i was 17 lol.gif finally!!! LOLOL
Also happy because the theater was full!... And people laughed a lot... to the point of getting me stressed cuz they wouldnt let me hear LOL
Katherine looked beautiful, Gerard looked HOT... And Eric (right? xD ) looked great too! drool.gif
I was very pleased with the storyline! smile.gif Thought it worked great! smile.gif I did hear some people talking about the movie, saying that at first it wasnt as great as they thought, and that as time passed the movie just got awesome... and kept getting better and better... I disagree with that, because really, a story needs a beginning so its not like the story should have been crazy funny since the very beginning... but thats just me. I thought it developed very great, but then again, im not one to say much lol... this is just one persons opinion smile.gif
Katherine's acting was as ever GREAT! AWESOME! She just rocks! smile.gif Everyone was great i think smile.gif
lol people went nuts in several scenes! smile.gif Which is great! just shows the movie was well accepted! Which makes me happy! smile.gif
Of my favorite scenes... and things about the movie...
Katherine/Abby's dance!; It was way more that i had expected! IT IS TOO CUTE! love.gif I just giggled everytime she did it xD
The salsa scene was perfect! though i wish it had been longer xD... if it were up to me... it should have been like 1 hour lolol... not that it is needed lol... but it was just that sexy grin.gif They dance pretty well!!!! smile.gif
And the next scenes... were great too! love.gif I was all happy! xD smile.gif
I cant wait for more of you guys to watch it so that we can discuss it! smile.gif
I pretty much loved all the scenes smile.gif... Of course the vibrating panties one is great! VERY FUNNY! lmao.gif people went crazy! Which was kind of annoying for me cuz i wanted to hear the dialoge, hehe but still... pretty fantastic to know people loved it smile.gif
Also loved the baseball one LOLOL... It was funnier than i had expected it to be! smile.gif I went nuts! LOL as well as everybody else! smile.gif
BTW i was the first one to get there! so i got the BEST seat possible! smile.gif... hoho
Im very very happy with this goodbye from the States!... Hope to come back soon! smile.gif Even moreso if there is more Katie stuff! hehe smile.gif
My fandom for her just keeps growing! smile.gif

I just watched it with my sister, and has to be one of my favorite KH movies. I definitely liked it better than KU due to how they presented both men and women in this film. They edited out quite a lot out due to what has been shown in candids, promos, and at the Q&A with Rob. The crowd I was with really enjoyed it.

I'm not going write my review now because I'm going head out with some of my BFFs to see it again for a later matinee showing. Normally I like watching Rated R movies at night, but we're saving money lol.gif.

Mel's Review

Going into this movie I had an idea of what to expect. but then leaving the movie I really didn't lol.gif. TUT really is a rare rom-com where it was realistic on men and women relationships, but also on the topics that is discussed between genders. Looking back you will be thankful that it is a rated R because you really couldn't get nitty-gritty in some parts if it was a PG-13. That said TUT is actually quite tame in it's rated R stuff in comparison to Apatow's movies, but it's still quite raunchy for a rom-com nod.gif.

Abby - Abby is a control freak who does like things a certain way from putting a straw in her drinks, flossing, and making sure everything is organized. It was interesting to see Abby loosen up over the course of the movie. What I liked was that Abby didn't completely change whatsover due to Mike. It was his influence that loosened her up, but at the end of the movie she is still Abby. I loved how quirky and at time dorky Abby could be. Her "spazzy dances" were freakin' adoreable, and I wish were able to see her first Snoopy dance in full since it was shown in the first trailer. Abby's dances were just so cute. Compared to 27d Jane or KU's Allison TUT's Abby was far more physical comedic role due to the dances, vibrating panties, salsa dancing, interaction with Mike, and the hot balloon ride. Katherine just nailed the physical comedy, and she did a great job at making Abby cute, control freak, and vulerable all at the same time. I was entertained when Katherine's Abby did guy impressions lol.gif.

Mike - I really really loved his character. Leaving the theatre my friends wanted to substitute Alex Karev for Mike lol.gif. Mike actually wasn't too offensive to me because some stuff he said I have heard several times, but not in a blunt fashion mind you lol. The only line I thought was harsh was when we first see him on tv. He takes Abby's call, and he calls her a "dog" sad.gif. Something no girl wants to hear, and Abby's face is just so crestfallen when he says it. That said that scene on the tv screen just tells you how crass he can be, so it was great to see his evolution throughout this movie. Just like Abby he doesn't completely change either at the end. He's still very much Mike, but you can see the influence Abby has on him. Mike allows himself to become a bit softer, and does a noble act. Gerard did a great job at making Mike his own, but not making him a complete jerk.

Abby & Mike - Without a doubt one of my favorite rom-com couples, and very high on my list of KH couples love.gif. The interaction between these two was a sight to see. You seriously want to see what they will do next because the chemistry between Gerard and Katherine was just off the charts. The way they did their banter, physical comedy, and sexual tension was amazing to watch. It was great to see these two polar opposites (and they are still that at the end to a degree) come together, and met each other halfway and make a great couple.

Supporting Cast - Unlike KU and 27d you honestly don't see a whole lot of them because this movie is solely about Abby and Mike. That said I really enjoyed Bree Turner's Joy because she made her character downright adoreable due to her mannerisms and how she said her words. The anchors and the boss had great comedic moments too lol. Really liked the addition of Mike's nephew because it added another layer to his character that really allowed Abby to see Mike another way.

Favorite Scenes - There were so many of them, but after 2 days these were the most memorable to me:

1) Abby getting her kitty out of the tree - Even though I seen this scene many times in clips it still didn't get old lol.gif. The audience just went wild with this one, and Katherine had the most funny expression after seeing all of Colin's glory lol.gif. This was one of those segments the crowd laughed so loud you couldn't even hear the dialogue when she was stuck in the tree lol.

2) Abby's "Ugly Truth" phonecall - I thought it was interesting to have Mike and Abby's first interaction be through the means of a phonecall. Even through a tv set they had the chemistry lol.gif. It was a great, funny, and also at times bold (due to Mike's language) to start off this battle of the sexes. Crowd had a great time during this segment.

3) Mike Helps Abby - I was glad to see the clips released were edited because they took a lot of funny lines out from the store to when Mike tries to teach Abby how to flirt lol. This is where a lot of the physicalness between the characters begin along with their physical attraction. It's well known at this time that Mike likes Abby's ass because he tends to smack it all the time, and saying she has the "raw material" lol.gif. Loved Abby's reply "just say I have a nice ass"....smack lol.gif. I agree with Katherine that I was glad they kept that one specific ass slap in the movie, that was completely improv on both Katie and Gerry's part, because it was so funny lol.gif. The flirting segment I couldn't hear the dialogue at times because the crowd was so loud with laughter lol.

4) Baseball Stadium - Talk about a Cyrano scene gone bad lol.gif. It was adoreable and funny all at the same time lmao.gif. This was one of those segments the crowd was so loud with laughter you couldn't even hear the dialogue lol. Katherine, Gerard, and Eric did an awesome job in this scene.

5) Vibrating Panties - Another segment I was glad it wasn't fully released because Abby does a lot more under the table that is not shown in the clip lol. This was a segment the crowd just went freakin' nuts eek.gif lol.gif. My audience was louder here than the baseball scene lol.gif. The higher and louder Abby got so did the crowd. Katherine nailed this scene to a tee, and you'll notice the little boy (who had no idea WTF Katherine was doing) will turn around as Abby is in the midst of her activity lol.

6) Salsa Dancing - This scene shows what sexual chemistry and tension is all about wink.gif. As my friend put it when Mike and Abby were dancing "you could cut the sexual tension with a knife". I thought it was good idea of Rob to make the shots of the dancing tighter because it made you feel the sexual tension even more. This was another scene Katherine and Gerry didn't have a set dance moves ready per se. They just did it, and man did they nail it despite both of these actors aren't skilled dancers. It was so hot because as the dancing goes on Mike and Abby get more physical with their hands and body movements thud.gif. It will make you miss Katherine's long blond locks lol. After the salsa scene someone from the crowd said "they are going to need a hot shower", and one person replied "so do I" eek.gif lol.gif. Obiviously, the crowd was involved in the scene lol.

7) Elevator & Hallway Scene - You can just feel both Mike and Abby are very much "hot" if you get my meaning, so when they are in the elevator (Grey's Anatomy isn't the only one that kisses in elevators lol.gif) you seriously want them to kiss already lol.gif. So your waiting and waiting just like the couple is, and finally they kiss grin.gif. It's a very lustful kiss at that drool.gif. Thought it was funny they tried to keep the doors from closing while they were kissing lol. The elevator scene dramatically shifts Mike and Abby's relationship, so in the hallway scene you feel for both characters. You want Mike to tell Abby to get rid of boring Colin because Abby is asking..wanting..in her own way as well to give it go with Mike. The crowd was really involved in these scenes because some would say "finally" when the kiss, and "awwww" when Mike walks away.

8) Abby is just Abby - This scene was great because it showed an old, but also important message (and makes me wonder WTF were the critics watching if they couldn't understand it) of just being yourself. Colin didn't know normal Abby. He just knew the "Ugly Truth" Abby, and that's not fair to her nor to Colin. I'm glad Katherine had her hair cut short because it goes great with the moment where Abby becomes honest with Colin. I liked how they did it. They didn't have Abby yell at Colin or be aggressive. In fact, Abby was quite soft-spoken about it, but also quite vulerable. It was sad to see Colin cover his almost shirtless upper body when Abby said "who would love" someone like her sad.gif. That one subtle movement by Colin showed he wouldn't love Abby for herself, but in fact Mike would. Abby could handle Mike and Mike could handle Abby. They were made for each other.

9) Hot Air Balloon - It was so funny seeing Abby pull that "Mike replacement" out of the hot air balloon basket lol.gif. Thought it was great to hear Abby tell the "Ugly Truth" about men instead of the other way around thumbsup.gif, and Joy is just nodding her head in agreement lol.gif. She really hits thing on the head to make Mike shows up. Once he does Mike and Abby go at it lol. It's a great hardcore banter between them, and the crowd was really involved in the banter lol. Both Abby and Mike made great points, and man did they smackdown each other lmao.gif. This segment I swear makes you want to have a longer ending because I thought Abby and Mike would be great anchoring "The Ugly Truth" together. It was funny seeing everyone from Mike's family to Abby's friends and co-workers watch them on tv together during this whole segment lol.gif. Granted the hot air balloon ride had a terrible green sceen behind them the actors stills pulled you into the moment where Mike and Abby finally admit their feelings and kiss. Alas, their last kiss wasn't lustful, but quite the rom-com romantic with a dash of Mike in it love.gif.

10) The ending - I really wish the ending was a tad bit longer only because I could seriously watch these two all day lol.gif. For a rated R they don't show a whole lot of skin (after watching the movie it's another thing I agree with Katie and Gerry on), but the implications fit with the running gag between Mike and Abby of "faking it" lol.gif. Wants you see where the couple goes next, and they were hot in bed thud.gif.

Overall, it was great, feel good movie to watch to forget one's worries. My friends, myself, and the crowds I was in had a blast nod.gif. Can't wait to see what's on dvd. Katherine, Gerard, and Eric looked amazing on the big screen drool.gif: thud.gif. I swear I thought I would have to peel one of my guy BFFs off the screen when we left because Katherine looked stunning in this movie lol.gif. Lastly, there is a quite of bit KH trivia in the film. Did you guys catch them? I think I found 3 pieces of trivia.

Damn u lucky person who has seen it twice! hoho
Tell us about the trivia! smile.gif
Hehe...
I really think people enjoyed the movie! It was very funny, and there were several scenes that made people go nuts... The scene after the dance (God im so dying to see it again! it was perfect!, and yesvery very hot) was awesome!... I do know everyone was just wanting for them to kiss!... And hen they do, everyone smiled! hoho... When colin comes into the scene though... IT SUCKED! I really hated him right there xD... It was the dram of the whole movie! hehe... I loved that Abby was honest! finally! When he was telling the stuff that he liked about her(or what he thought it was her) i think we all understood that there is no good from hiding what we are... I really liked it!
Im glad u liked it... lol.gif

Let's see noidea.gif....

1) Abby likes to knit
2) Adam Harrington plays Mike's replacement Jack Magnum, and he was in another movie with Katherine. Adam played Jason Marquette in the movie Valentine where he took Katherine's character out on a blind date right before she was killed. Ironically Adam basically plays another version of Jason in TUT lol.gif.
3) The elevator kiss I believe I already mentioned in my review post. Mike and Abby's first kiss is in an elevator (okay technically an elevator door jam lol), and on Grey's Anatomy Izzie and George kissed in an elevator on S3 episode "The Other Side of This Life, Part 2".
4) Another piece of trivia is more concidence lol. In 27d they played Josh Kelley's song "Unfair" while the two main leads, Jane and Kevin, drank and talked at a bar. In TUT his song "Under The Covers" was used basically the same way with Abby and Mike lol.

The green screen was sucky, but then again it wasn't gawd awful cause I seen worse even on big blockbuster movies lol.gif. Like you and I said it really didn't bug too much because the scene is quite entertaining to watch, and all the actors pull you in.

Definitely. I've been to KU crowds, but I have to say from my own experience TUT crowds were far louder eek.gif. They went crazy in so many scenes especially the teaching, baseball, and vibrating panties (this one being the loudest).

QUOTE
When colin comes into the scene though... IT SUCKED! I really hated him right there

I was expecting Colin at the door, but I didn't hate him until the moment he covered his body after he found out who Abby really was nono.gif. At least he wasn't uber pissed at her, but still irkesome lol. Colin and Abby were cute at times, but they definitely didn't have that same passion nor off the charts chemistry Abby and Mike had. They definitely accomplished that standard rom-com goal very well nod.gif.

Did you notice the scenes that were deleted? I know of at least 3 deleted scenes.......I think noidea.gif.

Well I thought they were cute at times... (i so loved that she covered her eyes at his "glory" lol... that was in the movie right? lol) But there was no real vibe... The first spazzy dance was the second deleted I noticed nod.gif.

IPB Image

Thankfully Rob still kept part of the dance in the movie, and the scene still flowed well and the audience enjoyed it. Alas, I loved Abby's spazzy snoopy dance, so biasely wanted to see all of it lol.

I also think they edited a tiny bit from the work dinner 'cause I don't remember seeing Mike winking at all in the movie. Whereas in most of the promos they have Mike winking during Gerard's title card. We also know they cut out a scene that featured Rob's doggie Jackson, and that will most likely be on the dvd.

Let's see noidea.gif.

The most obivious deleted scene to me was not seeing Abby's clothes being torn off by her first date in the film. We have all these candids of them filming this night scene, and it never made it into the movie lol.gif. Hopefully it made it onto the dvd.

IPB Image IPB Image

IPB Image IPB Image

The other deleted scene I heard about from those that attended Rob's Q&A TUT screening in Sherman Oaks. The original ending actually had Abby and Mike getting married, but Rob felt it made the movie flat so he went for a raunchier ending instead to match the rest of the film. According to one poster Rob also said the wedding scenes will be on the dvd shrug.gif.

During filming Gerry was seen with a wedding ring on, and that's how the question arose. I totally forgot to check to see if Abby wore a wedding ring at the end of the movie. Some say they saw one on her, but others say they didn't see one shrug.gif.
luzaleja
Oh... Woah I didnt remember about that scene with the car!!! Oh! I really do hope it makes it to the dvd! smile.gif
Hmm... I agree with Rob though, a wedding would have been just the normal ending... smile.gif It was good i think... though i want to see them getting married lol.gif
LOL... u cought many! smile.gif thanks hun smile.gif
Isabel Anne Evans
I agree with Rob about the ending as well nod.gif. I love rom-coms, but TUT is somewhat of a different take on rom-coms. I liked that it didn't exactly have that storybook ending because Abby and Mike are definitely not storybook type characters. It's one of the reasons why I enjoyed watching them. The wedding ending not only wouldn't fit the movie, but also the characters nod.gif.

They cut the skirt ripping scenes - didn't know that. Perhaps we will see it along with the others that Rob mentioned in the interviews on the DVD. Lets hope so. I would imagine the gag reel will be pretty hilarious and since the movie is R rated we could get some fun additional material. Something to look forward to for sure smile.gif

Just got back from seeing the movie. Loved it! I haven't read the reviews or really anything abut it and I really enjoyed the whole thing. Katie was really good in it, not afraid to be goofy. Gerald Butler is HOT and they made a great pair. The acting was great by all, it was funny. Really funny, I laughed so hard at some parts. The Theater was packed. Alot of men in groups weirdly enough. I think this might be my favorite movie of hers.

I watched the movie tonight with my wife. Very much enjoyed Katherine's performance - the business dinner orgasm scene was terrific and as ever she handled her comedic elements perfectly. Both her physical and expressive comedy were excellent.

The movie was a pleasant watch and I enjoyed the banter and dialogue and there were some amusing moments. Obviously the plot was fairly transparent, as with most rom-coms you knew that Katie and Gerard's characters would end up together before you even took your seat in the theatre, but it was easy going and fun.

The salsa scene between Abby and Mike was hot as was the elevator scene that followed it, and of course Katherine looked fabulous in the movie. She was particularly striking in some of the dresses she had to wear such as in the aforementioned dance scene and in the black dress she wore when "doing the dishes". smile.gif
Maywitch
I finally watched the movie yesterday and I loved it. I'm trying to write a review but so far I'm failing so it may take some time lol.gif Also, I did the spazzy dance after leaving the cinema, with people around me, that's how much I liked it.
