ABC Family greelights new 'Cutting Edge'
Fourth installment in franchise headed to cable

ABC Family has greenlighted "The Cutting Edge: Fire & Ice," the fourth installment in the MGM-produced ice skating franchise that started with the 1992 feature "The Cutting Edge."

Following a direct-to-video sequel "The Cutting Edge: Going for Gold," the franchise moved to TV with ABC Family's 2008 movie "The Cutting Edge: Chasing a Dream" starring Francia Raisa as hockey player-turned-figure skater Alex Delgado.

In "Fire & Ice," Alex segues into teaching after her skating career comes to an abrupt halt when her partner on and off the ice is injured.

This time around, Raisa is joined by Brendan Fehr, who stars as James Van Behr, the smoldering bad boy of speedskating, who pairs up with Alex. The film chronicles the duo's grueling practice regimen and tempestuous relationship as they prepare for competition.

Stephen Herek ("Mr. Holland's Opus") is directing from a script by Holly Brix. Craig Roessler, Sara Berrisford and Hudson Hickman are exec producing.

Production begins this month in Montreal for a spring airdate.

Cool. It will be great to see him on ice.

It's funny that his character's name is Behr.

It will be very nice to see Brendan back in action on the ice. I'm always amazed at how at east and comfortable he is on that slippery stuff!

Why don't we have a cheerleader smilie? We have a 'dead horse' smilie, surely a cheerleader smilie would be less violent, and kinder to animals. Save the cheerleader, save the world! But, ah, I digress...


Anyway, can't wait to see Brendan using his ice skating abilities! Though I'm wondering about the costumes...don't they involve spandex/sequins/bright colors? Now that, I have to see! though I guess speed skaters already wear bright colored spandex! Maybe they'lll just sew some sequins on...


There's a brief piece on ew.com today, also--though one of the commenters said Brendan was too old, "...like in his thirties!" Say what?! He is not too old at all, hardly ready for a walker to go with his skates...

I was also amused that his character's name is "Behr."

You know Hollywood always so fickle. *tsk* Next thing you know, they'll say he's forgetting things. I'd crack a joke about Jensen Ackles also being 30 but I'm far too polite for that (and I think lyric would come after me with Tom Hanniger's pickaxe o'doom so I'm not gonna). *ducks*

I picked up a copy of "Cutting Edge 3" today - will report back if I see anything that could be interesting speculation. Or if, anyone likes, plot points that could be aided along in this one (with spoiler tags of course )

Oh very cool news. I've only seen the original movie(D.B. Sweeney - seriously killed me to see him play a baddie on Jericho) but I will definitely watch this one!!

The last review I read of Brendan's film said he looked too young.... the entertainment industry is crazy. I think he has a versatile look - can look young if needed. It must be quite surreal to play a character called Behr. It's not that common a name is it?

i have 90% of the first film memorized. LOL. it became an in-house joke in 94 amongst my college friends since we were going to a hockey school.

Brendan told me that he is playing the part of a famous speed skater with all sorts of commercial endorsements. So the movie art department had to make up all sorts of advertising posters with his picture selling things like deodorant.

Interesting...

Why does that make me picture a commercial where he has to shoot a stick of deodorant into a goal with his hockey stick?

.... Fact I think they had a commercial like that once, it might have been for 'speed stick' deodorant way back when

Even that tour bus poster would bring in a lot of $ for the golf tourny. That cost big bucks to put on the bus eh! I like his hair longer anyways but I doubt he;ll keep it that way after the movies finshed filming eh.?

It's his ernest look right into the camera that intrigues me. that is the look of a serious competitor! And check out his upper arm muscles - aren't those referred to as "guns"? Well they look terrific! Of course these observations are made with only the motherly concern that he's eating well and taking good care of himself (and Jennifer is also taking good care of "our guy").

I'm looking forward to this film. Have always enjoyed Brendan's form when he skates. (easy fellow BOFs that isn't the "form" I'm referring to) He makes it look so easy; just second nature to him. He seems to simply flow across the ice. In my case, my tush is in more contact with the ice then my skates!

I voted for #2, but it wants me to join facebook, & I have no intentions of doing that, so at least it's noted here that I did vote.

Anyways, I like that one out of all of them beacuse it shows the "comedy" of the show,& not so serious. like the others are.( plus the others are all alike , so this one is the different one & stands out more )

IMO #2 is the best of the 4. In 1 & 4 Brendan towers over Raisa, and she's on what 3 inch skates. In #2 their height difference isn't a distraction.

Of course in all 4 Brendan looks just fine!!!

The height difference makes a lot of sense, the guy is usually a lot taller than the girl in pairs skating. What bothers me is the age difference. Brendan (while totally fine!!!!) looks 30 and Raisa looks like a teenager.

Yeah, I thought the same thing too. I had the same problem with Samurai Girl.
