Brit Morgan stopped by the MediaBlvd Magazine Radio show, The Two Doctors, on the eve of the series premiere of ABC Family’s The Middleman, to talk about her character, and the fun that she has in playing Lacey on the outlandish new sci fi series.
When Wendy Watson (Natalie Morales), blossoming artist, and temp agency employee bravely faces down a creature beyond reality, she impresses the straight laced superhero known as The Middleman (Matt Keeslar). Thus she begins her career fighting comic-book evil, so you don’t have to. The new ABC Family series, based on the 3 volume graphic novel series by Javier Grillo-Marxuach (Lost, Medium) premieres Monday, June 16, 2008. The series had a long road to air, originally written as a pilot in 1998, then becoming a comic/graphic novel series before being picked up by ABC Family.
Wendy’s activist and conceptual artist roommate and best friend, Lacey is played by the lovely Brit. The character of Lacey is trying to make a difference in the world, from protesting sushi restaurants, to throwing fake blood on fur coats. And she has a crush on Wendy’s new boss, The Middleman. Brit Morgan left her home in New Jersey, at the age of 18 and just out of high school and came to Hollywood. “I just packed it all up, I had a dream, and I drove across country and was determined to accomplish it, and I’m very blessed to say that two years later it’s all working out”, she says. After guest shots on CSI:NY and ABC Family’s Greek she has landed the role on the highly anticipated sci fi series. She also recently was cast as a lead in Sony’s webisode series, Buried Alive, which is going direct to DVD in the near future.
In describing The Middleman she says, “It’s pretty much a wild and crazy journey through the eyes of Wendy Watson, who is a young girl who gets recruited by a temp agency, that’s not really a temp agency, to fight comic book like evil” “Pretty much her whole world is turned upside down. I play her roommate, so I’m her link to the real world. Her day job is now fighting evil. It is a very wild and bizarre show. It’s pretty one of a kind and I’m excited about it! We get tommy-gun-toting gorillas, we get gangsters, and we get a CGI alien. It’s pretty great, and the series just keeps getting better and better”, she says. And it sounds like the fun will continue as the series goes on. “We have zombies, we have immortal tuba players. We have killer Peruvian flying pike. There’s a succubus; and they are fashion models that feed on the souls of innocent men. That is a very interesting plot line. We have aliens, of course, and portholes” she adds.
Though now into filming the seventh episode, Brit’s character, Lacey, still hasn’t learned exactly what her roommate does at her day job. “We’re filming the seventh episode, and my character has still not been introduced to any of it. I’m still completely in the dark. That’s the funny part about the show; I’m still completely in the dark as to what Wendy does. I’m like ‘You come home with trout gore, you smell like this, you did this, and you’re telling me you work for a temp agency!’ ‘You come home looking like your scorched with laser burns, and you’re telling me you work for a temp agency?’ And she’s like ‘Yes, I work for a temp agency.’ I just try to believe her. I don’t know what to think but I’m just a bit suspicious,” she says. “I’m pretty sure [Javier] is adamant on keeping the worlds separate for at least a little bit. But I have no idea what would happen if they collided. I’m hoping that I get a chance to fight some comic book like evil as well. He’s a genius. He’s amazing to work with,” she says of creator Grillo-Marxuach.
According to Javier, Lacey is the one character that has changed the most from his original work. He was asked by ABC Family to modernize her, and make her more of an activist, rather than a slacker, a reflection of the difference in her age group between 1998 and now. “I’ve read the graphic novels, I’ve read the comics. She has changed a lot. I think just in the fact that the characters become a little bit more prominent in the story line, I think is what he means by that. She just pops in a little bit in the graphic novel and says a few things. But she’s become a very whole character with a lot of feelings and a lot of emotions”, says Brit. Additionally, new with respect to the comics is the potential for a relationship between Lacey and the shows lead, the Middleman. “She’s got a huge crush on The Middleman. That’s really developed throughout the whole series, which never was planned in the graphic novels. Just all sorts of things are blossoming now it’s become a TV show. You can really dive into the characters and make plot lines that he never intended to begin with, but now it’s turned into its own animal”, says Morgan.
While this is her first outing in the world of sci fi, Brit seems willing to fully embrace it. “I’m not even going to pretend that I know a ton about the genre because I don’t. But I’m learning as I go. I’m very excited to be a part of this, and I’m excited because I think we’re going to Comic Con. I absolutely can’t wait. I’m ready to brush up on my sci fi. I’m just excited about all of the viewers. It’s going to be great,” she says. And of course, the possibility that the series has the potential to become a cult hit is a fact not lost on Brit. “I totally, totally know that. It could have a very strong following, and I hope so. I think it has the potential for that. It’s one of a kind. I can’t wait. Thank God for all those amazing comic book, sci fi fans that are out there. It’s a huge audience, and it’s a huge amount of people that love that stuff. It’s totally going to be great for sci fi fans, it’s awesome,” she says.
Even with a show with this much insanity on a daily basis, Brit’s favorite aspect of the series is interacting with her co-workers. “The best thing about the show is the people. I’m working with the best and brightest funny and open minded people ever. It’s a wonderful environment, and it’s very easy to just do what you love and enjoy it. No pressure, it’s just wonderful. I’m very blessed because not everybody’s like that. That is one of my favorite parts. Oh my God, it’s got to be the funnest show in the world. You know what it is? Anything goes on this show. There is nothing we can’t do. Any zany thing you can think of, we’ll probably end up doing it. That’s the best way to work when you are doing things that are silly. You know, that’s my favorite thing. It doesn’t take itself too seriously”, she says. The show does seem to be on a very rapid and busy schedule to complete filming and air on ABC Family’s summer schedule. “We started filming in June, and we will be finished by August. There’s seven days to an episode, and they are jam packed episodes. It’s a lot of work, but it’s great”, says Brit.
Also recently up for Brit is the web pilot, Quitters, which The Middleman co-star Natalie Morales is also involved in creating as a producer and star. “I had already known Natalie from shooting the pilot. So she called me up one day a couple of weeks after we shot the pilot, and said that her friend at the time had written a pilot. So we shot it, it’s actually very, very funny. So that’s how I got a part of that”, she says.
Also, currently available on the web is the Sony produced horror web series, Buried Alive. “It’s so funny, I just worked on the commentary today for Buried Alive”, said Brit. “They’re making it into a movie. It’s going to be a 65 minute film, and they’re going to have a booth at ComicCon. And who knows, it could be just like sci fi, the horror crowd is also die hard. It was originally webisodes, now made into a 65 minute feature film. I’m in the feature film. It’s going straight to DVD, but it’s pretty cool. It’s just a little non-union webisode, and it’s turned into all this. It just goes to show you, the possibilities are endless in this world. Five kids get trapped in custom made coffins. It’s very scary. I saw the whole thing for the first time today. It’s very scary. I play a girl named Melanie, and my friend is one of the people trapped underground and I’m determined to find them. I don’t want to tell too much other than that, because I don’t want to spoil it. But it’s very scary. It’s all done through either a webcam or a home video camera, so it’s very gorilla style which adds to its freakiness. It looks very homemade and very real. It’s pretty cool all put together,” she adds.
One of the strange coincidences and errors in relying on the internet for information on up and coming actors has hit Brit. A very prolific porn star in the 1980’s, Brittany Morgan has been incorrectly linked to IMDB’s entry for ABC Family’s series. “Yes, yes, I know. People bring it up quite often”, she says. “Everyone at ABC Family’s like ‘Oh No, there’s a porn star with the same name!’ Some of The Middleman credits have gone on her IMDB profile by accident. I was aware, which is why I changed it to one T. So I’m not the porn star! I think I’m a little more of an actress than a porn star. But it’s ok, everybody does what they love, and if she loves doing that, then more power to her”, she says.
The Middleman looks to be the surprise hit of the summer for ABC Family, and if the pilot is any indication, the character of Lacey is going to be very involved in the hilarity that ensues. The Middleman airs Monday nights starting tonight and through the summer on ABC Family.
