Clark Duke at the premiere of Sex Drive at the Gaslamp Theatre during Comic Con 2008.
| Clark Duke, along with co-stars Josh Zukerman and Seth Green, unveiled his latest film,
Sex Drive, at Comic Con 2008. Sex Drive follows the mis-adventures of Ian (Zuckerman) who is basically the last American virgin. It’s the summer before college, and at home, he’s loosing girls to his 14 year old brother, and his best friend Felicia (Amanda Crew), has a crush on his other best friend, Lance (Duke). But things may be looking up as he makes an online connection with the perfect girlfriend, Ms. Tasty (Katrina Bowden). The only problem is that she is in
Knoxville, and Ian is in
Chicago. When Ms. Tasty promises, “If you drive all the way for me, I’ll go all the way for you,” the mis-adventures begin with Ian borrowing his older brothers ’69 GTO Judge and heading out on a road trip with Felicia and Lance to keep his date with destiny.
Along the way, the group runs into an Amish rave, and Lance has a hookup with a woman that launches much of the action that follows. And when he finally meets the girl, Ian must also deal with his older brother (James Marsden), who has come after his car which was taken without permission. And of course, all things are not exactly as advertised with the dream girl. But then again, Ian hasn’t been totally forth coming with his online identity either.
Duke introduced the film at the Gaslamp Theatre a few blocks from Comic Con, for two showings. The film played to a full house of Con revlers, some in costume, while security people in dark suits, armed with ear pieces and night vision goggles patrolled the audience to prevent video taping of the movie.
The film will premiere in early October 2008. Duke recently participated in a round table about his experiences in making the film, and what it meant to be doing the premiere at Comic Con.
Can you tell us about the movie and your character?

Seth Green (Ezekial) and Clark Duke (Lance) in Sex Drive.
| Clark Duke> It’s about this guy Ian, who is a virgin. It’s the summer before college and he’s sort of willing to do anything at this point, to loose his virginity. He’s pretty desperate. He meets this girl on the Internet who says she will fuck him if he drives to
Knoxville,
TN. We live in
Chicago, and I play his friend, Lance who is this suave ladies man character who helps Ian out along the way, and coaches him. We also have our friend Felicia, who goes, and she is in love with me. Ian’s in love with her.
Is there going to be a surprise ending? Is it going to be a Crying Game thing?
Clark Duke> He does meet the girl, but there might be a twist. I’ll ruin the movie if I tell you what happens. That would just destroy it. That’s what James Marsden, who plays Ian’s brother, says. He’s like this really abusive, homophobic older brother. That’s what he keeps saying, “She’s totally going to be a dude.” He’s fantastic in it by the way. People are going to be really surprised by how funny, and what a gratuitous redneck he can be. He’s from
Oklahoma by the way. Jimmy’s no cultured pretty boy. Somebody told me the trailer comes out behind Step Brothers, but I don’t know if that’s verified or not. It’s definitely a movie to see with an audience. That makes it a much more fun experience.
How did you become involved with the film, and why did you choose to play this character?
Clark Duke> The director and co-writers, Sean Anders and John Morris, saw Clark and Michael, and for whatever reason thought that I was the guy for this part. As it was originally written, it was this cliché, tall blond good looking guy that is obviously good with girls. I wanted to do it, because I thought it was a much more interesting thing to say, that this guy who is sort of average can get all of these girls based on his confidence. That’s the main thing that Lance is trying to teach Ian is to have confidence.
Who else was already attached when you came on board?
Clark Duke> I don’t think any one else was. I think I was the first hire actually.
What was the mood like on the set during filming?
Clark Duke> It was pretty great. It was the most fun I had shooting anything. We were on location down around
Miami, so it was pretty fantastic. It was Anders first movie, but he did a fantastic job with it. Everybody was pretty great. Me and Marsden, and Seth Green had a great time down there living at a hotel, throwing beer bottles in swimming pools and stuff.
Is this your first time at Comic Con?

|
|
James Marsden (Rex) in Sex Drive.
| Clark Duke> I got to go last year just as a civilian. This will be my first time as a professional. It’s sort of one of my childhood dreams. I’ve collected comics since I was like 5 years old. I’m way more interested in that stuff than the movie stuff that’s sort of taken over the last 5 years. I think it’s good because it’s a very vocal and passionate audience down there. Those are the people that are going to be online talking about it and building buzz for it. So I think it’s really smart to take the movies. Personally, I was more excited last year to meet a lot of my favorite comic creators, than I was to see any celebrities. Celebrities are usually boring in my experience.
Are there any similarities between you and the character you play in this film?
Clark Duke> Honestly, yeah, it was just sort of me. I didn’t have to go too deep into character or anything. One of my best friends watched it, and said it was a lot like hanging out with me. I don’t know if that’s good or bad, because for the first half of the movie, my character is kind of an asshole. Obviously, it’s an exaggeration because it is a movie, but it’s more or less me.
How do you select the roles that you are going to play?
Clark Duke> I’m just drawn to stuff that I think is going to be fun to do. Derek Waters, that does Drunk History is one of my best friends. So that was kind of an easy one. And to get to shoot something with Jack Black was kind of awesome. There’s not a huge science to picking the roles I guess. Like, I said, the stuff that looks like it’s going to be fun. I’m shooting this Eddie Murphy movie right now, just because I thought it would be really interesting to work with Eddie Murphy for three months. And it has been.
What are your plans for the future? Do you see yourself doing more TV?
Clark Duke> Probably not anymore TV, as far as acting. I think I’ll be doing more writing or directing in the future.
Did you and the rest of the cast become friends during the filming of
Sex Drive?
Clark Duke> Yeah, especially me and Seth Green. I’ve known Seth for awhile now. So those scenes of him and me are really fun. We only have one scene where we really talk a lot, but that was really fun and easy. I became really good friends with Marsden too. Me and Josh. You become close to anybody on a movie set, it’s hard not to. You spend like 20 hours a day with people everyday for three months. So I would say you definitely develop a bond and friendship with everybody. It’s kind of like seeing old war buddies. You don’t see them all the time, but when you run into each other; you hug and exchange knowing glances.
Did you get a chance to drive that car?
Clark Duke> A little bit. That was the funny thing, I don’t want to hurt Josh’s feelings, but Josh can barely drive. There’s one scene in the movie where the car starts fish tailing and you can hear me laughing. That was real laughter, because he just lost control of the car and kept driving instead of stopping, he just floored it. I wish I could have driven it more. I didn’t get to drive it any in the film, just kind of for fun every now and then. But those cars are not real Judges. Their just shells of
Pontiacs that they painted to look like the Judge. So they weren’t the machines that the movie would lead you to believe they were. There were multiple cars too. The car itself is awesome. But some of the stunt cars and the picture cars weren’t totally tricked out like the actual one.
What else can you say about your co-stars?
Clark Duke> I think Marsden is going to be the thing that people are really surprised by. He’s really funny in it. You expect him to be this perfect boyfriend that some girl is going to leave for an interesting guy.
Any other cameos we should know about other than Seth?
Clark Duke> Seth has a pretty sizable part; I wouldn’t call it a cameo. Dave Sheridan’s in the film, who you may not know. He’s pretty funny. Fall Out Boy makes an appearance in the film as well. I’m not going to lie, I wasn’t a huge fan of their music before I met them, I just never really listened to it. But I actually bought their albums because I became friends with Patrick, the singer. Their last album is really good; I can say that whole heartedly.
Are we going to get any gratuitous sex in this one?
Clark Duke> There’s not that many boobs in the movie. The funniest thing is that for the unrated DVD we just shot some bullshit stuff, of just girls with shirts off for no reason at the Amish party and the house party earlier in the film. I walk by and there are two topless girls in the pool. I just look down at them then look directly at the camera and go, “This is gratuitous.” Then keep walking. But that’s not in the theatrical cut, but it’s pretty funny.
How many hookups do you have in the film?
Clark Duke> There’s at least two. There’s one that instigates my problems that I have in the film, my action sequence stuff. Then there’s the Amish girl, Mary that I totally fall in love with. Then there’s the chemistry and love triangle stuff between myself and the other two leads, Ian and Felicia.
Are you going back to Greek, or can you tell us anything about the writing you are doing?
Clark Duke> Yeah, I’m still on Greek. I’ve been on it less and less because I’ve been doing movies and stuff, which I kind of enjoy more. For the writing and stuff, there was one thing that we thought we were going to be able to announce at Comic Con, but it was just too tight of a schedule. I really can’t say anything about it, but that you’ll probably hear about it in a month or so.
What can you say about A Thousand Words?
Clark Duke> It’s myself and Eddie Murphy. Eddie can’t talk for most of the film. I play his sort of assistant that he is very abusive to. I’m really scared of him and always just really jittery because I’m so nervous around him. I think it’s going to be really funny. The stuff I’ve shot is pretty funny. Allison Janney is in it. It’s been a totally different experience than anything else I’ve shot because of the size and scope of it. It’s a big budget movie, and working with Eddie, who has been extremely nice to me and cool. I just have one day left on it then I’m done. |
