Caroline D’Amore has a lot of irons in a lot of fires, and seems to be succeeding with all of them. She won a lead role in Summit Entertainment’s Sorority Row, still in theatres. The remake of the classic House on Sorority Row also stars Rumer Willis, Audrina Patridge and Jamie Chung. Her DJ album with her own hit single is in the stores, and her single premiered at number 4 on the Japanese charts, and she recently signed a deal with Sony as an artist and DJ. Back in the
US, her swimwear line “D’Amore by Marceau” was featured in a fashion show which was part of Kourtney & Khloe Take Miami, on E. Caroline has had guest appearances on Entourage, 90210, and The Clinic, and has several independent films to her credit.
At the age of 17, Caroline became a well known fashion model, and Paper Magazine chose her as one of the “most beautiful people”, while Maxim Magazine named her one of the “New Girls to Watch Out For on the Block.” She has been featured on several covers and inside magazines such as Teen Vogue, Seventeen, Cosmo, Flaunt, Us Weekly, and Life & Style.
Currently focusing on her music, Caroline recently stopped by the MediaBlvd Pop Culture Hour radio show to talk about her latest film, Sorority Row, and her recent trip to
Japan with Kenn, Shaun, and Allie.
Kenn> How are you doing this week Caroline?
Caroline> I’m really good! I’m really happy to be home and in
America for a little while. I just got back from
Japan the other day. My DJ album with my one single just came out, so I just got back from doing all the promo for that, which was fun. I got to fly back to LA for the premiere of Sorority Row, which is the best scary movie out right now! Everybody has to go see it.
Kenn> Can you tell us about your part in the movie?
Caroline> Yes, I’m one of the lead girls. I actually play Audrina Patridge’s younger sister. I’m kind of a creepy character. I kind of come and investigate, and all of the girls are a lot older than me. I pledge my sister’s sorority, and this is after a fatal accident happens with her, and they all think I’m creepy because I look like her, and I’m stalking them. It’s pretty cool!
Shaun> The movie seems to be doing well here in Vegas. I guess it sort of has a Vegas feel to it.
Caroline> Maybe the people in Vegas like seeing a bunch of bitchy girls running around in their underwear. I’m the only one that doesn’t run around in her bra and underwear for half the movie. I will say that even though it is all that, it’s basically like Mean Girls meets Scream. It’s five bitchy girls getting killed with a dry sense of humor. It’s really funny! Without the horror, it’s a comedy, and without the comedy, it’s a horror.
Kenn> Is this technically a remake of House on Sorority Row, or is it just similarly themed?
Caroline> Yeah, it is a total remake.
Kenn> What did you think of your foray into the horror genre?
Caroline> I love horror movies. I’ve been obsessed with horror movies since I can remember. So being able to be on the other side of one, and to be able to see how people get murdered and how crazy it looks, and how not real it is, is just really fun. It’s my favorite type of thing, and I think I want to continue to do horror movies.
Kenn> They are really big right now, especially the remakes. A lot of the really big cult favorites of the 80’s and 90’s are being remade now for a modern audience. It’s cool and I hope the trend continues.
Caroline> I hope it does too, it’s fun. Giving it a newer edge with references to Facebook and what not, but it’s the same concept. It’s very cool!
Allie> Caroline, I was wondering, you’re doing the DJ thing, which is awesome, and you’re doing the film thing. Which one did you start doing first, and how did you get into the other one? What made you decide to go into both?
Caroline> I’ve always been acting since I was a little girl. My dad just didn’t let me get into it too early. He was like, “You’ve got to go to school. I don’t want young actor kid syndrome.” He just wasn’t down, so I had to wait it out. I was good friends with DJ AM, and I was obsessed with him and would watch him every night. He told me where to go to buy stuff, and to get my first equipment. So I just started learning, and someone just asked me. A director who I’d done a play with called me up one day, and asked, “Do you know any hot female DJs for this show I’m doing at LA theatre?” I was like, “I’m a DJ.” I fully lied, and he said, “Ok, you’re hired!” I hung up the phone, and was like, “Oh, no what did I do?” I called up AM, and told him I took the job and needed to learn how to DJ NOW! So I took that job, and somebody came up to me that night and hired me to do their Monday’s at Josephs. Then I got a Tuesday night, and was working since I was 17 DJing.
Shaun> I also saw you did a couple of episodes of 90210.
Caroline> Yeah, I was DJing on those episodes. Entourage was a good TV show, and all of these things paved the way for my theatrical career.
Shaun> How is it auditioning now? Has it gotten harder or easier since the writer’s strike?
Caroline> It’s always felt the same to me. I have no idea if I do a good read or a bad read, to be honest with you. I cried after the Sorority Row audition, because I thought I sucked. Then I booked it, so I really have no idea if I’m doing good or not. I just roll the dice. I haven’t noticed anymore difficulty. I have noticed getting into really great rooms, and being able to read for really cool parts, which comes with your first feature.
Shaun> I have to tell you, the baked ziti at your place here in Vegas is terrific!
Caroline> Oh yay, I’m so happy you like it. Do you get it with eggplant, or sausage?
Shaun> Sausage, sorry, I’m not much of an eggplant eater.
Caroline> Oh my God, it’s so good! I’m a little bit on the vegetarian tip, but it’s all good! We just opened a new one in
Hollywood on
3rd Street and Switzer. My sister and I just opened our own new one.
Allie> In Sorority Row, you got the opportunity to work with Carrie Fisher, who is a legend. What was that experience like, working with her?
Caroline> Princess Leia, yeah. It was really, really cool. She’s so incredibly smart. Everything that comes out of her mouth is just entirely intelligent and interesting. You feel like hanging out with her, and feel like you are learning something. You feel like you are with a legend. She was just so sweet, and so cool and motherly. It was my first time on a big movie set, and I had my dog, my chihuahua, Billie, with me the whole time in
Pittsburgh while we were shooting. She loved Billie so much, she would grab her face and say funny stuff to her. At the end of shooting, she gave everybody a little gift, and she gave me a little dog head pin that looked like my chihuahua. She’s cool and she’s sweet.
Kenn> Let’s talk some more about your trip to
Japan. Your single debuted at number four there, right behind Madonna’s new song, right?
Caroline> Yeah, I have a song called “Love Like This One”. I actually teamed up with a rather large star in
Japan; her name is Marie. We did the song together, and I wrote it with a friend, and we had a verse translated into Japanese. It’s all over MTV right now, and I just got the news that The Hills, which is a really big show in
Japan, just asked for my song to be the theme song for four months. I’m excited, I just did my first music video and its playing all over MTV. My record is in the store, and my sister and I went and took pictures next to the huge Carolines on the wall. It was cool! My album is doing well.
Shaun> How come you aren’t at the Emmys?
Caroline> I’m stuck in the studio! I’m working on a new song with Shwayze, and I have a lot of work to do. I’m kind of just focusing on getting everything to be cool, rather than going to all of these events.
Shaun> How was it working with Rumer Willis? Did her mom and dad and step-dad show up on the set at all?
Caroline> No actually, they were giving her space and letting her do her own thing. She’s awesome. Being with five girls all the time, someone is bound to fight, and we never did. Audrina is cool, and everyone was just down to make a great movie. It was a great work environment. All of the girls got along, had fun together, and went out on the weekends. Everybody was one big happy family, believe it or not.
Allie> Caroline, what are some of your upcoming projects? We know you have a ton going on with the restaurant, and DJ gigs, and the fashion line. Do you have any other movies coming up?
Caroline> I do, and it’s actually, believe it or not, called Frat Party. It’s a comedy and I’m doing all of these college based movies, I think, because I didn’t go! It’s a comedy, and is really funny, and it comes out November 1st. It’s a romantic comedy set in the college days, so like American Pie meets much crazier times, like today!
Kenn> You have so many things going on, I wonder how you find the time for them? You have your modeling and your fashion line as well.
Caroline> Yes, I have a swimwear line called D’Amore by Marceau. It’s actually sold on my good friend, Kim Kardashian’s website, http://shop-online.com We just did a huge fashion show for my lineup at a hotel in
Miami. My girls, Kourtney and Khloe Kardashian are shooting their TV show, Kourtney & Khloe Take Miami, which is on E, and they did an entire episode doing a huge fashion show at the hotel, and they hosted it for me. It was just my line, and 700 people got turned away at the door. It was such a hot event, and it’s all on one of the ending episodes of that show. I’m really excited about that, and everybody seemed to love the new line. It’s selling like crazy, and I’m just really fortunate with how it’s going. We got to do all of these huge shows, and I can’t wait to the next one.
Kenn> How do you find the time to do all of these things? Do you just concentrate in little spurts, then go on to the next?
Caroline> Exactly. When one thing isn’t happening, the other is. So I’m always busy, but not with everything at once. Everything has it’s season. You go through pilot season, you leave to do a movie; that’s all you’re focusing on. When I’m home from doing movies, I have different dates DJing. I was just in
Japan, then
Canada, and now I’m going to
Niagara Falls,
Detroit, and
Toronto this month. I have my music manager, and my acting manager, and agents and publicists and all that, so they coordinate behind my back. One person will call me and be like, “Now you need to switch gears and focus on this. You’re leaving and need to do these shows in
Japan, or whatever.” It’s good. Now the things I’ve been working so hard on, there were so many things, but these are just the ones that kept going and are starting to make it. I’m focusing on these now. I feel like I’m kind of an odd breed. I can’t sleep and wake up in the middle of the night with ideas. And I run into my living room and write them down.
Shaun> And when do you find time to make all the pizza? (Laughs)
Caroline> Luckily, I don’t have to make the pizza. All I have to do is eat the pizza. My sisters run the joint. I can’t even ring up anything. But when I’m there, I’ll serve anybody and I just help out as much as I can with the family business. But I mess up a lot. When I was younger, I got fired from the pizza shop like five times!
Allie> Caroline, there’s a question in the chat room from Emily in
Pennsylvania, and she wants to know something about your 90210 stint. She is asking about the cast and how likable they are. Are they divas, or down to Earth?
Caroline> They all seemed pretty cool, the ones I worked with. Everybody talked in the makeup trailer and seemed really nice. I think they are still too new to be too pretentious.
Kenn> I see you’ve done a lot of travel here, with trips to
Egypt, the Olympics, and the MTV Music Awards in
Japan. Is all of that travel a lot of fun?
Caroline> You know what, it is. I’ve gotten used to it. I used to get motion sickness, and it was too much for me. But I’ve gotten used to it. I have to get off planes and be in a completely different time zone and just walk off the plane, go straight to the venue and DJ for six thousand people all the time. I think my body is just used to it. I live half my life on planes. Sometimes I’m on planes longer than I’m in the city I’m going to. I just went to
Japan for a weekend a couple of months back.
Kenn> How are you with eating sushi?
Caroline> I’ve gotten really good at it. The sushi there is not the same as what we think sushi is. I’ll be in a restaurant and ask for a spicy tuna roll, or a
California roll, and they are like “What are you talking about?” After being there all the time, I had to find certain places. I found one place actually called California Roll in
Tokyo, and I walked in, and it was all Americans. But there is a lot of good food.
Tokyo is the place to go fabulous dining. But there are some things I definitely shy away from. Like jellies, they are into jellied meat. There are just some things I can’t do. It’s hard, but you figure it out easily. The first time I went there, I spent all my time at McDonalds, till I found the right places. But I’ve kind of got it down now.
