“The Best Film of 2009 So Far…” [Up]

The word I will use to describe this film is “flawless.”  All animators should aspire to reach this level of greatness.  I rarely come across a film that delivers pure cinematic perfection.  All I can say is that Pixar did it again.  “Up” will bring laughs, tears, and will tug at your heartstrings – and you won’t be able to forget about this masterpiece anytime soon.

null The word I will use to describe this film is “flawless.”  All animators should aspire to reach this level of greatness.  I rarely come across a film that delivers pure cinematic perfection.  All I can say is that Pixar did it again.  “Up” will bring laughs, tears, and will tug at your heartstrings – and you won’t be able to forget about this masterpiece anytime soon.

As a critic, it’s my job to analyze the errors and the successes of a film.  However, this proves difficult since if I were to deliver praise to this film for everything it deserves – this review would several pages long.  If I were to critique the flaws – this review would be very short because, as far as I could tell, there were no flaws.  It is truly rare to come across such a classic magnum opus that, quite literally, has no flaws.  I can often point some nagging faults even with my most favorite films, such as “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and “The Lord of the Rings”, even if it merely concerns the long runtime as the sole disenchantment.  However, try as I might, nothing seemed out of place with “Up.”

So this review will be very short and concise.  I have to applaud Pixar Animation Studios for delivering another beautifully rendered film, continuing its tradition of unique plots and stories.  I have to deliver mad props to Bob Peterson for delivering such an engaging, funny, and heartwarming script.  I have to bow down before Pete Doctor for transferring this vision from the paper to the screen, and executing it masterfully.  I have to point out the all-star cast, including Ed Asner and Christopher Plummer.

But above all else, I have to point out how this movie hits every note brilliantly.  This movie is pure exhilaration.   A few years ago while I was sitting through “Son of the Mask,” I began ask myself why I put myself the torture of being a critic and why I would force myself to endure that audio/visual version of water-boarding for an hour and half.  This is why.  “Up” is why I love to critique movies.  This makes up for all those atrocious ones.  To put it simply, this is a perfect movie.  I give it a 10/10
