The New Year is a time for a new start. What is your New Year’s Resolution?
Healthy living should have been your answer. Eating right and exercising is a key point to staying healthy. A lot of people slack off towards the end of the year because they know their resolution will be losing weight. I can tell you, right now, that that’s the wrong way to go. I know this from experience. Towards the months of October through December, I wouldn’t consider myself healthy. I would eat whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted to. This was because I figured I would lose it all the next year. My way of thinking was completely wrong. One thing I learned is that you have to keep a consistent way of eating all year round.
Three things I know can help you keep a healthy living are eating small portions, eating slowly, and exercising 3-5 times a week for at least half an hour each. If you eat small portions, you’re one step closer to healthiness. If you eat slowly, you will get full faster which is control for your food intake. If you exercise on a regular basis, it not only helps your body stay healthy but it also increases your metabolism. Metabolism is a collection of chemical reactions that takes place in the body’s cells to convert the fuel (the food we eat) into the energy needed to power everything we do, from moving to growing.
There are a lot of people in this world who take things overboard and develop eating disorders. The two most common are anorexia and bulimia. Anorexia is when you starve yourself and over-exercise. Bulimia is when you stuff yourself with food, and then you throw all your food up, gaining no possible weight. This deprives your body of needed nutrition, leading to malnutrition and sickness. When you immediately eat food, you don’t gain weight. You only gain weight if you don’t put into consideration the amount of food you’re eating. Eating helps you live on a daily basis. You use your calories for fuel and energy to move and grow. These diseases are dangerous and are a great impact on your life. A lot of girls my age think they have to look a certain way for the world to accept them. Recently, I saw a video on the internet of anorexia. It showed a girl looking in the mirror of herself and she’s all chubby in the mirror, but when you see her in reality she is only getting skinnier and unhealthier day by day. It makes me wonder why they would want to change who they are on the outside for what they are on the inside.
All three of my aunts had this problem. They affected my life with that and the different comments they made towards me. I’m a very lean girl so I didn’t take anything they said to my head until it was almost an influence over and over again. I felt like I needed to be this way, so for a week I wanted to try it. I was headed towards that path a couple years ago, but before reaching the point of enabling the disease, my mom stopped me. When you exercise, keep it in a controlled environment. Healthiness is the same as having self-control. You can’t be healthy if you have no control over what you do. For any situation in my life, self- control is a necessary aspect.
If you could remember anything from this article, it would be “Don’t Give Up”. Giving up is the worst possible thing you could do. When I was little my parents used to tell me to never give up. I always questioned my parents on that fact. I never understood what was so important about that, until the day I gave up. Then I realized that giving up is harmful to your life and you’ll regret it. If you give up, you’ve made a statement saying “I can’t do this”. You have to believe in yourself. I believe in you. Now it’s your turn to believe in yourself. Believe that you can be healthy this New Year. Start fresh and start new-the Healthy Way!
