cbgb The music coming from 315 Bowery will be silent after 31 years. The sad news was announced on December 7, 2005 - the legendary club CBGB will close its doors on October 31, 2006.

Owner Hilly Kristal and the building's landlords, the Bowery Residents' Committee (a non-profit group), could not reach a mutual agreement to keep the doors open. The BRC wants to turn the club where legendary bands like The New York Dolls, The Ramones, and Blondie have performed, into a homeless shelter.

After attempts by the BRC to evict Hilly the club’s lease expired on August 31, 2005. The BRC claimed Kristal owed them back rent after a recent increase, while Hilly claimed he was never informed of the rent increase. Even New York Mayor Bloomberg got involved in the negotiations between the two groups. Hilly eventually agreed to pay $35,000 a month in rent until the club closes its doors this October.

Kristal is searching different parts of New York City for a new home for CBGB; he has also been looking into opening a CBGB in Las Vegas. For anyone who loves music, you might want to visit the club before it is too late and the history is gone forever.
