"D'oh!" [The Simpson's Movie]

simpsons As Homer Simpson was nice enough to point out in the opening moments of this poorly animated film, why would you pay to see something that you can get for free?  Throughout this film I found myself asking that same question over and over again.  The movie feels like an elongated episode of the TV show.  Fortunately, that wouldn't be such a bad thing.  For eighteen years, the Simpson's have been one of America's favorite sources of entertainment.  The offbeat humor and wonderfully refreshing style of the most entertaining and original animated comedy ever will never lose its cool.  However...it is better suited for the television screen than the big screen.

I suppose the writers were glad to spread out their creative wings in the newly freed quarters that PG-13 had brought them.  Unfortunately, I found the entirely random bursts of uncensored crudeness to be incredibly transparent and detrimental to the quality of the film.  The movie is mediocre at best, and while it does have somewhat sharper graphics than its television counterpart -- it still is 2-dimensional.

It pains me to lament about how disappointing this movie was, seeing as I came into the film with great expectations.  The comedy is just a tithe worse than the show, but the voice acting reaches its usual heights.  However, I just didn't like this movie enough to recommend it.  I didn't feel as though it was worth the price of an admission ticket, when you can just as easily watch it at home.  If that wasn't enough to dissuade you, the plot meanders for most of the film and by the time it finally seems as though it is heading somewhere -- it has already reached its conclusion.

At only 87 minutes, this really is a longer version of an episode, and I would actually advise simply watching 87 minutes of the TV show, and I guarantee you will be more entertained than if you wasted your money on a movie ticket.  Although this movie is by no means a bad film, it is by no means a good film either.  I'm afraid I'll have to give this film a 6/10.
