Tripp, played by Matthew McConaughey, has an interesting way of getting rid of girl friends when they start to get too interested in a long term commitment. He invites them over to his place for a romantic evening where they quickly find out that he still lives with his parents played by Terry Bradshaw and Kathy Bates.
Desparate to get their son out of the house and out on his own, Tripp’s parents hire Paula, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, as an interventionist to get him out. She promises that she can have him out on his own in 3 months, but doesn’t count on the fact that Tripp is not like most of her other clients who are generally losers and shut ins. Rather he is a gorgeous hunk.
The movie brings to mind both “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Day”, and “The Wedding Planner”, which also starred McConaughey, maybe with a mix of “Hitch” added in. However, the movie isn’t even nearly as good as any of those. There is little chemistry between McConaughey and Parker, and the best performances are actually given by Bradshaw and Bates in their relatively minor supporting roles.
Given that there aren’t currently a lot of date films, or so called “chick-flicks” in the theatres right now, this one isn’t as horrible as some of the main stream reviews are making it out to be. In fact, it does even have it’s funny moments. But it’s also far from great as far as these kinds of movies go.
It’s not really worth the full admission price at the theatre, and would be more enjoyable when it hits the dollar bin at the local video store.
