Supernatural: Will it Make the Cut?

Supernatural fans the world over are fond of a good scare: from wendigoes to phantom travelers, from vampires to demons; generally anything goes…anything except a ratings scare that is. Supernatural has the misfortune of being placed in a killer time slot competing with ratings giants Grey’s Anatomy and C.S.I. Devoted fans know this means trouble especially where ratings are concerned. The Nielsen crowd are a tough bunch to crack especially with regard to genre television like Supernatural.

Talk among Supernatural fans has produced a fear worse than the Demon orsupII what he plans to do with Sam, or even Dean’s fear of losing his brother to the Dark Side. A new myth has been born, the validity of which has yet to be denied or verified, and in the interim fans are either running scared or strategizing a plan of action in the event that rumours that we might not be getting a third season of Supernatural are true.

At this point, it could go either way and everyone concerned is waiting with bated breath wondering where Season 3 of Supernatural stands. The sheer panic some fans endured has toned down a bit but as we are waiting on the brink of uncertainty the question still lingers in the air. Some are doubtful as to its return while others are whispering with confidence that it’s a sure thing. And we’ll know soon enough with the CW Upfronts coming up May 17, 2007.

Ratings are seesawing at present; there was a time in the not too distant past when the ratings seemed pretty good considering, but as of late it seems there has been a bit of a dip, which is rather disconcerting. The brave amongst us are holding our heads high, but at times fear creeps in at the oddest of moments especially when one thinks that the show is targeted for a specific audience, with specific tastes, and the paranormal is not everyone’s cup of tea.

However, the show has a lot of things going for it, the most obvious being the two lead actors, Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles. A lot has been written about their on-screen chemistry (slash fans, keep your minds clean or don’t, whichever!) and all I have to say is: I agree, wholeheartedly. There are few actors who get along with each other so well that you can’t decide who you like more. Sure, sure…I’m a Sam-Girl at heart but Dean is making his mark in a convincing way. The same goes for Dean-Girls, slowly but surely Sam is creeping into their hearts just as Dean is in mine. Still, even though so much rests on the shoulders of these two fine actors, there is more to the show than just sizzling Sam-Dean (or Padackles as some would have it) hotness overload.

Supernatural has an array of talented guest stars that gives the show that extra energy, and then there is the superb writing and magnificent special effects. Of course, the fans know this already…so those of you not watching, I suggest you tune in (especially if you’re from the Nielsen crowd) because you are missing out on an exciting drive through paranormaldom. In the meantime, I urge fans to keep your fingers crossed as the day of reckoning (that is, the CW Upfronts) draws closer; and let us know what you think over at the Supernatural Forum. May the Supernatural forces be with us!
