It seems as though there are a multitude of weddings on TV this month. There's the unforgettable ER wedding with Abby and Luka, and there's the bound-to-be hilarious holy union between Keith and Elliot on Scubs. Not to mention, the Grey's Anatomy season finale wedding definitely will drawn in mass quanitites of viewers! Despite how many shocking or amusing weddings I've seen or going to see this May sweeps, this has to take the cake.
Throwing aside the traditional "lets spend half the episode building up to the wedding" format, this episode of Boston Legal plunged right into the wedding only a few minutes into the episode! Of course, it wouldn't be Boston Legal if the priest didn't get arrested, the bride went into labor, and the groom and his Marine buddies 'secured the exits' for the feds. I just love how whenever Brad gets a chance to display his Armed Forces background -- he really seizes the opportunity! "I'm practically a Navy Seal!"
After the wedding was canceled, Brad quickly realized that his child would be illegitimate if he wasn't married to Denise before the child's birth. I'm not the biggest fan of Brad and Denise's storylines, but those scenes had me on the floor laughing! Brad's desperate attempts to find a suitable replacement for the priest, and Denise's screams were quite entertaining. Finally, Claire was able to find the incurably senile Judge Sanders to unceremoniously perform the ceremony while uttering such classic lines like "who's that in her [children cover your ears!]" and "why is it [the baby] so wrinkly?"
The subplot involving Jerry and his attempts to help a woman who was being emotionally supported by her goose was even more entertaining than the wedding plot. Despite a few ill-timed purrs, I thought Jerry did a good job even though this case was below his usual status. As for the goose woman, I think Jerry and her had some chemistry -- at least, before her goose was indirectly murdered by Denny Crane!
Speaking of Denny Crane, we finally got the underlying reason for his crazy antics throughout Boston Legal -- and it had nothing to do with his alleged mad cow disease! Through a profoundly beautiful scene, Denny conveyed his feelings of age and unreliability to Shirley. I suppose it still didn't justify his attempt to engrave his name on the Stanley Cup, or to fire a shotgun in the office place, but it does justify another Emmy nomination for the talented William Shatner!
As for the case about the illegal immigrants, I have to congratulate Boston Legal once again for tackling a controversial topic! In my opinion, the highlight of this episode was when Alan gave his closing. James Spader has always been a terrific actor, but the main attraction of Boston Legal for me is his powerful closing. Spader delivered another show-stopping performance!
This was a great episode, and I suppose it was only fitting that it would end with the Stanley Cup falling off the building. (I wonder how Denny is going to rectify that error.) Props to James Spader, William Shatner, Candice Bergen, and Christian Clemenson for raising the bar when it comes to talented acting! I give this episode a 9/10.
